  1. Selby Boat Centre will have a crane in on 8th August lifting boats out for transport or blacking. The crane that is booked will lift boats up to 25 tonnes. Anyone wanting a lift in that area can contact SBC on 01757 212211.

Please note we have no commercial interest in SBC. Our vested interest is simply that the more boats lifted on the day, the less is our share of the crane hire to lift Sara out for transport South!

  2. We've lived aboard full time for over a year with pump out loo being used for poo and portapotti for wee.

Sounds like an extended version of our Separett Loo.

Must be very good for improving individual muscle control!

    Edited to add:

I've just had an attack of subconcious lateral thought - the "View new content" link has taken on a whole new meaning!

  3. There have been many discussions elsewhere about the merits/de-merits of remanufactured oils, the general concensus seems to be avoid them, certainly in the performance motorcycle world, but pay yer money take your choice

For a performance motorcycle you are quite possibly right. High revs, high performance, engines that last 50,000 miles if you're lucky. These need all the help they can get. I wouldn't put anything but the best in my bike.

But for a boat diesel engine, rarely doing much more than 2 or 3 thousand revs and maybe 200 hours per year. Why would you pay £50 plus for the oil?

  4. There are some isolated waterways (the normal term). The most obvious being the norfolk broads but others of a worthwhile length...

Brecon and Abergavenny 33 miles 6 locks

Bridgwater and Taunton 14 miles 5 locks

Chelmer and Blackwater 13 miles 12 locks (excluding the sea lock)

Medway (non-tidal) about 20 miles and 9 locks

The OP did ask about the UK, not England.

There may be some upset Scots and Northern Irish along shortly......

I do like the Crinan canal!

  5. Yes but I dont think it costs £150 to send an email or a letter. If it is a cost to persue a late payer then BW must be on a good screw. How long does it take, err look on computer, put in boat number see he is late send letter email about 10 mins if that, have a fine by all means but let it reflect the true cost not a figure that is just plucked out of the air. Its not as if they are going and doing a personal visit.

Do BW claim anywhere that the penalty reflects the cost of collecting a late payment?

Is it not just part of the charging structure for a BW licence?

Bottom line is if you don't like the charging structure, don't buy the product and don't keep a boat on BW water!...

  6. We've visited Braunston a couple of times, not had any trouble but did comment on the high proportion of the 'superior pompous snotty git' type of boater.

If some of these have got up the noses of the local yoof I'm not surprised there is bother.

  7.

    The signs that say

"Which part of Slow Down do you not understand ?"

    "For duck's sake, slow down!"

    "Master boaters slow down........"

One of the advantages of the Yorkshire Navigations is that we don't see many of those signs.

We're presently moored at our favourite spot just upstream of the Went aquaduct, New Junction.

Just been passed by Humber Princess in the dark - biggest headlight you ever saw!

Sara dropped a foot, rose two, then settled back to normal. I've just been out to check our four BIG mooring pins - no problem.

But definitely my responsibility to moor appropriatley for the passing traffic.

  8. Firstly, there is a legal and enforceable requirement to pass moored craft so as not to cause damage.

That does not necessarily include a requirement to slow down.

Is there not an implicit assumption that boats will be moored in such a way as to not be damaged when passed by a boat travelling at or below the speed limit?

I took the OP's first post as labelling the owner of the badly moored boat as just as inconsiderate as the boats passing at speed...

  9. I'm sure I read somewhee that the Llangollen is the busiest stretch of canal in the country. My question which is the least cruised stretch in the country?

    Market Weighton canal?

The EA charge serious money to work the lock into the Humber - which tends to restrict traffic somewhat.

    Witham Navigable drains?

Very quiet when we did them a few years ago!

    and to be really silly...

Glamorganshire canal - there's about a half mile of it left.

The rest is under the Cardiff - Merthyr trunk road.

  10. Hello All,

I'm trying to source an oil filter for our Kubota - engined Fischer Panda generator.

Much to my suprise ASAP supplies have failed to come up with a match.

It's a Kubota 16271-3209-3 (HH160-32093). It looks like a bog standard spin on filter, so I'm sure there must be an equivalent.

Any ideas for identifying an equivalent and supplier?

    Ta,

  11. Our fuel gauge is about half inch diameter, 4 feet long and made of wood.

Water gauge is a piece of transparent pipe T'd into the tank outlet.

Both are very accurate, very cheap, and certainly don't involve drilling extra holes in the tanks.

  12. We had a similar battery switch fail, just melted under load.

I was using one of these as the isolator in the generator line, switch was rated at 350 amps, but melted with only 250 amps passing through. No make/break arcing, just couldn't take the current.

I replaced it with a similar one and monitored its temperature and it too quickly heated up. Checked the voltage drop across it and realised that basically these switches are crap, have huge internal resistance and won't handle their rated current without burning out.

I've now replaced it with a forklift 'hit button to stop' switch, which is basically a contactor with a manual action; i.e a spring loaded breaker with big meaty contacts rather than a flimsy wiper switch.

These are designed to break under full load and have minimal internal resistance.

    Problem solved.

I bought it from Battery Power systems, and it wasn't much more expensive than the 'Marine' badged battery switch.

Also had to buy an enclosure to mount it in.

BPS do all sorts of useful high current DC kit - good for electric boats!

    HTH

    All the best.

  13. The answer is simple. Use your friendly neighbourhood coal boat!

Can you deliver me 200 litres to Goole please?

and I'll take 5 bags of smokeless while you're there....

Now there's a business opportunity for someone - as far as I know, the nearest coal boat to the Aire and Calder is in Wigan!

    Edited to add:

There are the Rix oil barges but I believe minimum delivery is 500 tonnes.....

  14. Am I missing something here?

If I'm going to spend a lot of money, I make sure I know the price before I do.

When we fill Sara's tanks its going to cost anything up to £500. Thats a lot of money.

So I ask. And if I'm not sure about the answer I ask again until I am sure. Then, if I like the answer, I buy.

It doesn't matter what the sign says.

Just don't commit to buying the stuff until you are sure you know the price you are going to pay!
