    I can highly recommend Bushnell Legacy 8 x 42 pentoprism Bins, they are superb quality and if you shop carefully, very good value for money.

    Be aware that the higher the magnification, the more lense wobble you will experience. The best pair of bins I ever used were ex-naval 8 x 50's

    but my Bushnell 8 x 42 are very useable.

    You're comparing apples with bananas here.

     

    How much would it cost for the exclusive boating rights to the same section of canal? ie no one else is allowed to boat on it.

     

    Until anglers start paying similar amounts to what boaters pay I say sod 'em. And if that completely drives them all off the canal then so much the better. They're flaming nuisance.

    You know, some of you boaters are even more grumpy than the anglers you're moaning about!

     

    I can see it from both sides...I'm both a boater and and angler...passionate about both, so take my chances to do either or both whenever I get the opportunity.

     

    If the anglers are in a competition, then it will have been organised by a club which will have paid for the fishing rights on that stretch. We don't get to fish matches on canals for free you know! The club should have set rules for fishing near locks, sanitation stations, moorings etc so as not to inconvenience boaters...the anglers should know to move/retrieve their keepnets/tackle etc if a boat needs to use the facilities...it's just one of those things that we have to put up with when canal fishing. It's an inconvience for the angler, but it's just something that we have to live with....if they're causing a problem, then contact the controlling club.

     

    It would be good if we could remember that canals nowadays are meant for everyone...boaters, anglers, horse riders, walkers and god forbid....even cyclists and dog walking, would you believe?

     

    A bit of give and take on both sides would go a long way to making it a better place for all of us.

    Have you ever tried using the towpath when there's a dangling competition is going on? 99.9% of canal danglers now use poles, to reach the elusive far bank, and feed their swim with ultimate precision, the only snag is that poles need an unbelievable amount of gear. The danglers end up totlly monopolising the towpath, making progress, even for a pedestrian very hard; if you are riding a bike forget it!

     

    These "GB's" are making living side by side almost intolerable!

    Sorry all,

     

    But ever since BW dispensed with the services of their warden Hazel, at Cosgrove, I have noticed more and more "Anglers / fishermen" in competitions along the moorings up to the water and sanitation point at Cosgrove.

    I'm sure that whilst Hazel was employed as warden, there was never any noticeable clusters of "grumpy bastards" fishermen.

     

    This weekend (12/06/2011) they were there, dangling their maggots into the cut, the last "GB", was just on the last foot of towpath, before the concrete slabs in front of the water point, his keepnet was on the very joint, making mooring up very tricky. This "GB" had the nerve to mutter about taking care of his tackle.

     

    I'm sure that there should be rules and regulations that ban fishing along side sanitation points.

    I think spares for the Johnson would be easier to find, and much cheaper. Those Lister pumps need special tools for reassembly. Oh, and by the way, they're not really vintage, for that you need the old reciprocating pump.

    Edit - the original RN recip water pump was rather over-engineered and prone to wear at certain crucial points, & AFAIK the D1 wasn't made as a marine propulsion unit until relatively recent times (20 years?), so there's probably not an 'original' style of pump for them. DM2 &3 have used Jabsco/Johnson pumps for a long time.

    I don't get this! How on earth can it claim to be "over engineered" and yet "prone to wear at certain crucial points"? The two phrases simply do not go together!!

    We left Great Linford a couple of weeks ago, it was during the exceptionally nice weather of The Wedding, we passed an old NB, on which the elderly couple were still having regular "Domestic" incidents, they live on board, the boat never moves, the stench coming out of the side hatch was the worst I've ever smelt - far worse than the urinals in Birmingham Market in the late 50's, according to Gary, they never have a pump out and he has never seen them use a Thetford, I dread to think where they dump their logs........

    Living in South Africa I do a lot of 'outdoor cooking' (called by different names in different countries). I use a Weber 'kettle' braai which acts like an oven but gives the meat that smokey taste. On a narrowboat I think that this type of cooker might be impractical because of it's size and wonder what you use? I have seen 'swing-out' cookers that attach to the stern rails of yachts but again they probably take up too much space on a narrowboat. I suppose disposal BBQs used on the shore would be an option, but they tend to be quite small from what I have seen. I prefer a charcoal fire although gas-fired is becoming quite popular.

     

    Anyone have experience in this form of cooking on a narrowboat? Kiki maybe?

    Hi John,

    We use a Weber Smokey Joe, which is small enough to be stowed away under the drive hatch, on top of the swim plates. It is a kettle type and is a really good barbecue.

    Hi All,

    I wonder if anyone can recommend the most effective / economical way of powering 2 laptops whilst on board?

     

    Currently, we have an Adverc 600w inverter,which soon drains the otherwise healthy domestic batteries. SWMBO is a digital artist, using Photoshop CS5, and when she is mid flow, she is reluctant to shut her 'puter down. Any advice will be gratefully received!

    Our NB has:-

    1 x 110Amp Starter Battery

    3 x 110Amp Domestic Batteries

    70 Amp Alternator Driving a Sterling Alternator Controller

    1 Victron 60Amp battery charger

    1 Kawasaki 1200w Genny

    SHMBO has a new Dell Studio W7 Laptop

    and I have a Samsung NC10 Netbook, running on XP.

     

    I will indeed look at those Maplin's 12V 'puter adaptors (need to run some cables to the pullman diner area (not a huge task) to do that. I keep my follicle challenged scalp hair fairly short, SHMBO uses neither hair drier or straighteners, we do have a 12v fridge, which is turned off overnight. We have no domestic gizmo's like microwaves, toasters etc. All, in all, a fairly simple installation(less there is, the less there is to go wrong)!

    This Set Has a Top Quality Panel With 1000:1 Contrast and 1.3ms Response

    and no mention of one of the most important things... power consumption :unsure:

     

    1440x900 super high? lol nothing comes in that res so its upscaling or downscaling to suit.

    1000:1 contrast is really lame these days (mines 2million:1 native and 16million:1 dynamic)

    1.3ms response is ok though :)

     

    I would not buy without finding out power consumption.

    I forgot to mention the power consumption, according to the manual, it's 4amp, the voltage stabiliser is rated at 5amp

     

    on a 19" LCD TV, does it really matter if its up or down scaling?

    I concur - I used excel, and pi looks rounded off.

    But, are we going to split hairs over a fraction of 1cc?

     

    But! re-reading the post title, I must admit that the question is confusing, as there is no correlation between CC & HP, HP is purely dependant on the state of tune and aspiration (Super/Turbo charging) of an engine.

    the reason cyclist get away with riding on pavements, jump traffic lights and generally don't give a shit about rules of the road is.....they don't get nicked by the police,,the sooner the police realise that it would only take about a week of standing in a shop doorway out of sight of the cyclist and have a colleague just up the road to stop and nick the bastard and issue a £60 fine when they jump the lights, they will soon come into line.......but then again

    PS I ride a bicycle and a motorcycle and want to stay alive so I don't jump lights

     

    Would not the same logic / argument apply to catching a very common form of criminal activity - using a mobile phone whilst driving?

     

    or,

     

    Inconsiderate lane hogging of the middle lane / outside lane of motorways, since the police decide to abandon proper patrol car presence on the motorways and resort to highway robbery by installing "speed cameras/revenue collectors, since then, "lane discipline" has deteriorated alarmingly.

    Quite nifty but your still stuck on the end of a wire. Thats why i use a repeater on the roof, gives you full coverage anywhere inside the boat with no attached wires :)

    That's a propaganda belief. Halal slaughter, and kosher slaughter, are the most humane methods of slaughter - which is why licensed abattoirs generally use the same methods. The only controversy is whether stunning before slitting the throat is halal. Some Muslims argue that this risks breaking the rule that the animal must be alive when the throat is cut, but this is a minority view and licensed halal abattoirs in the UK do stun the animals.

     

    Most of the propaganda about halal slaughter seems to focus on the fact that the animal is left to bleed for hours. This propaganda never mentions that the animal died within seconds of the throat being cut, rather than literally being left to bleed to death, or that it is absolutely standard practice in any abattoir, or indeed that most of us would gag on mammalian meat that had not been drained of blood before cooking.

     

    Strange, we saw a number of Halal butchers advertising that their meat is "non-stunned Halal", some people prefer this as they believe that adrenalin helps tenderise meat, which is exactly why cats will cruelly play with their victims before eating it.
