  1. Hi Phil, thanks for your response. I've been living on the River Avon for the last 2.5 years. Everyone says that moorings are hard to come by here but in my experience that simply hasn't been the case...perseverance and friendliness go a long way. I've had 4 temporary moorings and now I have a permanent spot on the riverside. good luck with your search!
  2. Hi Phil, I'm also very interested in this as an option for myself with my widebeam and was wondering if you got anywhere with your enquiries? Thanks in advance.
  3. this would be incredibly useful to us!! we have someone coming to repair a solar panel on Monday so this might be a great option that I can get figured out. thanks. yes. ok i will have a look thank you!
  4. ah yes that would help. it is a hurricane diesel heater.
  5. i don't question that! but it's useful for me to have someone here on my boat explaining things to me, in person, as I'm still getting my head around the setup and keen to learn the best options for me.
  6. oo yes I have had the heating on. without you knowing the setup of my boat...how does that work 😅
  7. ok thanks everyone! amongst all the posts from gas fridges to starter batteries there is some really useful stuff for me in there so thank you. definitely realised that a jackery won't be the right fit. I think I will speak to a few more specialists about our setup and think about whether we really need one. we hope to only be cruising during the summer and hopefully back on a mooring before winter....hopefully... we can also heat our water by running the engine. we just wanted to try and avoid doing that every day as I thought it's not great for it? but perhaps that's a better option thank forking out for a generator which uses petrol or diesel anyway. interestingly, i turned our immersion heater off about 32 hours ago. I haven't been on the boat but still connected to shoreline. this morning I still have hot water. is this because of residue hot water left in the calorifier??
  8. our budget is minimal, probs 500 - 1000 max. We are fully set up to live off-grid the generator is mainly there as a backup when we do need that extra bit of energy or if the weather is particularly bad. I'm really interested to hear if anyone has experience with the Jackery which has a lithium battery. It's much more eco and would suit us very much if it is feasible.
  9. Hiya, we are going to be living on the cut this summer. We are fully set up with solar panels and a good battery setup. However we are thinking about a generator for the cloudier days and for our hot water as we have an immersion heater. Wondering if anyone can recommend a decent generator? Furthermore, has anyone got any experience with using a Jackery?! This would be ideal for us as it's greener, we can then also use it in our van and recharge it easily, but unsure as to whether it will be powerful enough to power an immersion or washing machine. Thanks in advance for your help
  10. that would be an option but i rather my love my home so trying to figure out ways to keep it. thanks tho!
  11. Hi there. I have seen some previous posts about this but most of them are quite old and don't give away too much information. I am hoping to look into the possibility of moving my widebeam canal boat 60 x 12 on to a river in Cornwall or Devon. I understand that this comes with many more challenges and there doesn't seem to be too many options but I do like myself a challenge! Does anyone have any other info or tips on how one might go about this or know of anyone so I could pick their brain?? Thanks in advance!
  12. I think i've rather made a fool of myself with this post. I very much appreciate all your advice, and apologise for wasting any time with my miscalculations. I will be doing extensive research tonight to aim to get through the thames lock and Teddington lock on Thursday..
  13. @Loddon ooh yep you are correct! yes sorry guys I've got my names mixed up! it's been intense first few days of travelling on our new boat. lots to learn.
  14. we are heading South toward Reading and from most of what I've read it seems easier that way?
  15. @blackrosewe are going south towards Reading so we definitely dont
  16. I am moving my home because I've just bought it. So it is essential travel. We need to move the boat now so we have to get through.
  17. we are coming from Brentford so don't believe that we go under the Hammersmith bridge
  18. Hi there, I am trying to get through the Thames Wharf from Brentford. Hoping tomorrow. Been unable to get through to the wharf on the telephone number and was unaware I needed to book a passage...i'm very new here and need to get my boat through!! We have heard that they are just doing passages on Tuesday at the moment..is this correct?? All friendly advice welcome please
  19. Thanks for all your responses. I received the full report today and the surveyor has made it a lot more clear as to what he was referring to and what needs to be done to the boat. The current owner is also getting a new BSS and an electrical survey on the boat so it's all looking good!
  20. Yes she has already offered actually which has been great. And no I didn't imagine he would be. Still not got the full report yet so perhaps I should wait and see what that has to say?
  21. Hi there, I am currently in the process of buying my first canal boat and looking for some friendly advice please. I got a survey done last week and the surveyor called to let me know that he had quite a few concerns with the boat, mainly electrics, and the BSS. Turns out the same surveyor had in fact passed the boats BSS in 2018, however didn't realise due to a change in boat name and ownership. So, this has left me feeling rather confused.. I would love to get a second opinion but simply cannot afford it. The surveyor seems, from our phone conversations, like a decent person as does the previous owner of the boat. Anyone who might be able to offer some advice or insight would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
