  1. The existing engine is beyond hope, would I need to replace yanmar with yanmar or could I replace with a lister, penta etc. It has an Enfield z drive currently.
  2. Surely the existing Z Drive weighs and sticks out about as much as a small 10 or 15hp outboard?
  3. Waiting for them to get back to me, just wondering the kind of wait time for a slot. In all honesty aside from the cost of all this I'm keen to replace with an outboard to free up space in my aft cabin, engine hasn't been looked after for years and is worn, really not worth me fixing, I'm going to try and dismantle it myself in the water and sell it for parts.
  4. So after a few months of trying to get my inboard to work ive finally given up and have been recommended to convert to an outboard on my 30ft grp. Obviously will need to take it out of the water, I'm on the K&a near foxhangers, does anyone know where I can get the boat on dry land for a week? Will I be hard pressed to find space now we're in better weather? Cheers
  5. Have contacted my mechanic, he suggests a fuel filter clog so I'm going to replace that and the oil filter, will update.
  6. Just had my yanmar 2gm looked at because it was really struggling to start in the cold weather. Had a new alternator and water pump installed, just been back to start her up and it's starting alright if I start in a high throttle but if I then lower the throttle or put it into gear the engine cuts out. Mechanic mentioned the kill cord being dodgy and I don't know how old the fuel filter is, is it likely the problem could be do to with either of those? Also bought the boat with the reverse gear disabled, mechanic fixed that too but maybe could have affected things?
  7. Does anyone have any experience/suggestions for finding a hardstanding for a 30ft Grp? Needs a full refit and would like to have the time to do it on land. Ive seen reasonable prices up north but is there anything reasonable in this neck of the woods?
  8. Yep, no glowplugs, had a hard time this morning until I turned the compression lever as per the manual and it worked first time. 30ft, not sure about her air draft, I'm planning on putting a wooden wheelhouse on her to replace the grotty canvas. That's encouraging, engines aren't my forte so that's good to hear
  9. Recently acquired an early 80s Grp central cockpit Cabin cruiser. Had some trouble starting the engine the other day, probably due to the cold but it got me wondering, when/if it gives up the ghost what would be a good alternative. Currently it is a 15BHP Yanmar 2GM which from what I've seen is pretty old (any ideas how old roughly?) is 15BHP about right for this size and weight craft or is it a bit overkill? Ideally my next move would be to look in to electrifying the motor either directly or as part of a hybrid diesel system, I'm assuming as it is Grp and much lighter than a trad NB it would require less power to propel? What kind of engine size should I be looking into? Cheers
