Well that's the problem with forum identities versus real life. Until now you have been on here under a pseudonym and with an avatar that clearly wasn't you, and although you have over the years made references to your canal-based business, I had no idea who you were in real life, or what business you were involved with, or what boat(s) you owned. As far as I know we have never met in real life, but then how would I know? I suspect I am not the only longstanding forum member in this position.

Are you talking to me here? My Avatar is me and I've never had a canal based business...what are you basing this on?

Nor I. Though having seen pictures of BIRMINGHAM before thought - Wow! Yes please.

It would be a pity if it was 'converted', but owners call the shots.

The new owners don't want to convert it but as it is now theirs it's entirely up to them what they do...but I'm not so secretly glad they don't.

    Secondi had no clue

Then why not quote Brians post instead of mine, would have been less confusing.

Because alot of people don't know who owns what boats, I'm buggered if I know who owns every working boat or tug or what there faces are or even the names or worst forum names. The fact you have a pic stood on the back means nothing, I could up load lots of pics of me on the back of boats don't mean I own them might just be a nice pic of me

I had already participated in the discussion when my signature stated that I owned Birmingham, many people on here know me out in the real world. I've been on this forum since 2005.

There you are then, it proves even more so it's the boat that matters.

Owners and past owners are a minor part of the history.

Allybsc being the past owner is even less of his/her business, the clue being in the word "past"

    Congratulations to the new owners.

My original point was that rather than speculate on what was going on why not simply ask me, your point proves nothing.

  5. I wonder does anyone have any information about a Harris Brothers boat built in about 1961 named Ramillies, I'm told it was one of 6 built as pleasure boats. I've seen the other threads but they don't answer my questions, what I want to know if possible is....did it go to a hire company or was it sold privately. I would be grateful for any information at all.

    Cheers me dears.

....... and how is anyone to know that?

You show your boat name as "boatless at present"

Nobody is talking about your business, does anybody know what your business is?  I don't.

Anyhoo, nobody was talking about you, they were interested in the boat and the subject matter is "Historic Boats".  Not "Self important crabby owners of boats"

On that theme, I think Birmingham is a stunning looking boat.

    Congratulations on your acquisition.

If I see you out and about on the cut I shall ignore you.

    ....... you know!

I only changed my name to boatless at present after I posted that message and there is a picture of me on Birmingham as my avatar. I haven't bought it I've sold it after owning it since 2012.

I may be crabby but I'm only selling because my husband died, I didn't want to sell it but it made no sense to keep it. Feel free to ignore me as is your right.

Has Birmingham finally been sold? It has been moved to Paul Barbers yard at Sheet Stores basin Long Eaton.

Ooh I wonder if it has...

I hear from a reliable source that Birmingham has sold and has gone to sheet stores for some metalwork

     repairs.

    How reliable...

I'm trying to build a picture of how feasible it is for an Edwardian house on the Wirral to have been fitted with electric light when built in around 1902. Either from some sort of localised distribution, or its own dedicated generating set.

Divided into two houses in around 1965 and having moved in 6 months ago we are currently re-wiring our half for atleast the second time, during this we have found a significant amount of cotton insulated cabling in steel conduit to lighting in each room buried under what appears to be the original lime plaster. Obviously it could have been heavily modernised after build but just might have been like that from new.

It appears Neptune Bank near Newcastle was generating in 1901 and that in 1918 Lever Brothers built a power station on the banks of the Mersey, ahead of a national power grid as we know it being developed over the course of the 1930's, but exactly where that leaves a successful Merchants house remains slightly unclear. The house was owned by the same family from atleast 1908 through to being split in 1965.

Funny you should mention that because my Great Granddad Henry F Cawley was one of the men who went round the country installing electricity to domestic and commercial premises from around the turn of the century and he worked at a power station on Forth Banks for Newcastle and District Electric Lighting Company, it opened in 1890.

I presume you mean £75K was the asking price for Prince, not what you paid for "Brum"?

It's just what you have written can be read differently?

I would have thought that a staggering price for Prince, but £30K sounds low to me, unless there is a big "Gotchya".

Yes sorry...if we could have afforded 75K we probably would have gone for it. He actually said between 75-85K when I spoke to him on the phone.

I didn't know him but it would be a fitting tribute if the boat could continue to be looked after, the way it clearly has been.  RIP.

How very patriarchal of you...why would it not be...every decision for that boat was made by me.

  11. Less of the former Mr Fincher...I'm more of a lurker now ninja.gif

I got the keys and had a look round Rigal at the weekend,it wasn't nearly as awful as I'd been led to believe. If it came down a bit I might consider it for our old age liveaboard...providing the important bits were sound, the annoyances could be sorted.

  12. Isn't it, we have too, his grandparents had the Birmingham and the Bordesley from new, he brought his Mom Dot to meet us, she's hilarious! She used to work the Cambourne and the Juno with her hubby Ted in the 50's. She came to Alvecote this year, she's in her 80's and she wanted to steer on the parade but Rob had to talk her out of it because she's a bit unsteady, she gave him such an ear bashing about it!

Salsa189 your Dad is friends with Sarah Jane on FB too and they were on our boat with Dot at Alvecote.
