Going up a lock near Chester I entred the lock and the boss started to fill it. After a while I noticed that the stern was down on one side and had a look round the boat to see where it was hung up - nothing. By now the stern was well down and I was really puzzled. She shut the paddles and we had a good look. It turned out that I had entered the the lock with a stern rope trailing in the water. This rope had got jammed between the bottom gates and was holding the stern downm.
Haven't done that again.

I am sure this has been posted before so apologies, the boat syndicate I belong to are considering whether we should change our pump out system (the tank is getting a bit corroded and smelly) or whether we install a Thetford type cassette toilet.
There are strong feelings in both camps and we would really appreciate views on advantages / disadvantages and experiences of other boaters.
Also is anyone aware of companies who can re-line tanks (e.g. resin systems etc.) I know this can be done on larger industrial tanks (even when the tanks are full of holes) but I am not sure if it is feasible in a pump out tank (I would imagine access would be interesting!) also I have no idea (if it can be done) of the cost implications.
You've opened a can of worms here. Opinions are as disparate on here as they are in your syndicate.

Excuse me Alan, but my opinion is as relevant as anyone elses!
I have never had a pump out loo on a boat I have owned, being as I have never owned a boat before, but I have used a boat with a pump out system, and one pumping out was enough to decide me thanks!
I really don't understand. You pull in, ask someone to pump out your toilet, go to the shop/chandlery, come back and pay your £15. What is so unpleasant about that?
Dave - the worst elsan point I ever saw was at Whaley Bridge. Full and sh*t everywhere. It doesn't matter to me whether this was caused by a self PO or not it was still disgusting. To pretend that most Elsan points are clean and pleasant places doesn't wash with me.

Well I've no quarrel with STV and now we know we can put up 4 candidates but once again I come back to...... WHAT HEAVING MORON ANNOUNCES AN ELECTION, SETS A DEADLINE FOR NOMINATIONS AND A POLLING DATE AND THEN KEEPS THE MECHANICS OF VOTING UNDER THEIR HAT UNTIL ASKED Typical BW clusterfu<k!
What has it got to do with BW? Typical BW bashing. For you nothing they do is any good and I suspect that this will be true of C&RT.
-
It is my perception that the current consultative regime employed by BW is heavily biased towards clubs and associations, to the extent that almost all representation comes from that quarter, and that it consequently over-represents the views of those who choose to become members of such clubs, unsatisfactorily choosing to approximate the views of the club members as representative of all boaters.
Such an assumption is, of course, flawed. The mere fact that they choose NOT to join such clubs tells us much about the fact that such boaters don't view the canals in the same way as members of clubs, and have different priorities.
I also worry that representatives arrive with baggage, claiming that they represent "x" people, where "x" is the total membership, regardless of the fact that the view they express may be at odds with the view of a significant part of their membership.
Ah, but isn't CWDF a bit of a club or association?
Having said that I'd support you despite several differences in the past because you are not a "BW basher" but you are capable of acting in the interests of boaters in general.
-
Oh fine indeed, which one stands for what?.
I think whoever stands must be a CCer. Some of the others don't see a canal day-in-day-out.
And therefore represent a minority of boaters.
-
I can't vote in this spurious poll, because I don't know if I will be able to vote on my ballot paper for more than one candidate!
There you go. I confidently predict that there will be no "official" CWDF candidate(s).
-
Of course in order to stand the candidates will have to reveal their identity to the forums in order that they can be voted for.
-
Does it not make sense to start a thread where people who want to stand can declare themselves? I agree that from there the numbers are likely to be self selecting.
How will they be self selecting? Let's suppose that we get ten people wanting to stand. We then have a poll. If the poll idicates that there is one person with ten votes, another with eight and so on then, if there is no target figure for the number of "official" candidates, all will stand and divide the CWDF vote. If we select one candidate then he/she will gain all CWDF votes in the election.
-
If we just select suitable candidates the numbers will be self selecting.
That is true but a single candidate would attract more votes from CWDF members in the final election than four separate ones will individually.
-
This could be a start.
-
Do you not coinsider it important whether we would be looking for one CWDF name, or four ?
I think it might make a lot of difference both to who wanted to put themselves forward, and what support they might get.
I can't see how anyone can commit to it with so many unanswered questions.
Can anyone answer any of the questions, yet ?
OK Lets start with a poll on how many.
-
Five pages and not a suggestion about how to select a nominee(s). Can I suggest that a separate thread is started purely for those who wish to be considered. Then a poll selecting nominees.

As for the smell during a pump out I have never smelled anything but that may be because I'm not often present. I'm usually in the shop or chandlery whilst someone else does the deed.
I've had both and much prefer the proper job - a PO
Starcoaster - your opinion is not really relevant as you have never experienced a PO loo. I put up with a cassette for years and accepted the disgusting emptying process but this boat has a PO and I much prefer it.
Elsan disposal points are disgusting. Nearly always in a mess. I'm glad that I don't have to go in them any more.

All men grow beards. It is only those who want to look like women who shave them off.

I've been boating for 10 years now. 5 with our present boat. On a still day sometimes the bow swings to the left and other days it swings to the right when reversing. I have to do some pretty accurate reversing when I enter our club arm and can confidently say that I am still useless at it. The rudder has no discernable effect at any speed which is not surprising as its area is a tiny proportion of the hull length and it is not directing a jet of water. Progress is very slow as I have to constantly put it in forward to straighten up.
The accuracy of my reversing is also dependent on the number of people watching.

Our boat is due it's first Boat Safety Certificate. Is it a standard charge that all inspectors make or do they differ.I suppose travelling costs must come into it somewhere. Or is it a negotiable charge?
Mine last month was £130

The original post had the description "Bw are on the ball!" implying that BW had failed to register C&RT with the Charities Commission and this was typical of their actions. It turns out that C&RT does not yet exist and so could not register.
What the hell this has to do with BW I don't know. The OP is not on the ball at all!
I agree with Carl. Phrases like "Boat owners feel" and "We also feel" definitely imply that all boat owners agree with him.
If he had said "Some boat owners" instead then your argument would be valid.
I am a boat owner and I refuse to bash C&RT until I have experienced their control of the waterways for a reasonable time. I sincerely hope that it works well but there wil be those who will pick up on any minor problem and whinge about it.
-
I would also add that I am not one of the many boaters you refer to in your letter.
Neither am I. What gives the OP the idea that he can speak for all boat owners?
He was just looking for something to bash BW/C&RT with and has been proved to be jumping the gun.
The sarcastic topic description of "BW are on the ball!" applies more to him in this case.

20 years old?
That's practically brand new!
I did think about the 01 changeover but the sign is very shiny.
01484 is correct. He has been there for donkey's years a I expect he has never bothered to change it.

I will ask the wife when she comes home.

We now have our own boat and still take a car full of stuff every time we go. I can't work out why, it just happens.
What do you havee to carry? We have enough stuff on the boat for a weekend. Obviously we have to stock up on things like dog food/tea/sugar now and again and we have to carry clean clothes/washing but that is all in one small bag along with the milk.
-
I know Malcolm Bergin. He is a nice guy and a pretty good guitarist as well. I can't comment on the quality of his shells.
-
Another disadventage is that you can't keep loads of your personal stuff on the boat. If we go to the boat for a weekend we take some milk and that is all. We don't have to pack clothes, food, towels, dog food, tools, etc.
This is a minor inconvenience but should be considered.

Thanks for the link. Episode 7:1 has an interview with an old friend, Adrian Bird, who I haven't seen for 20 years!
