  1. Hi all, anyone know where I could get a manual for a RN dm3 please? I realise the RN register is probably the best place to look, bu I am in the process of buying one, and don’t want to join until the sale has completed, hopefully in a couple of weeks.
  2. I said that without pressing a key! ? Thanks to all as usual for the helpful responses, ?for a good result on the pre purchase survey and I’m on my way! Anyone any opinions on good/bad insurance and breakdown cover? I’m pretty handy and can fix a lot of stuff, but I’m told breakdown cover is a must.
  3. Hi all, purchase of my first boat is progressing, awaiting survey currently. Will need to move her from North Oxford canal to Lancashire once completed, and I’m told CRT can grant a pass to allow this in these troubled times. Anyone know if this possible, and how difficult it would be with the locks etc not being used for some time? I have enquired of CRT but no response yet.
  4. Do you need to declare Drought to CRT prior to booking passage? As I’m sure it states 27” But many seem to done it with considerably more. Thanks for tip about earlier in the year, I was wondering why Savick brook wasn’t dredged more. I haven’t even got what will be my first boat yet, and will need to gain a little savvy before attempting the Ribble. I intend using a marina in Scarisbrick or Rufford initially, and as the boat lies on the North Oxford at the moment, I’ll likely pick up a bit of experience on her maiden voyage!?
  5. Hi all, we’re in the process of buying our first boat (offer accepted subject to survey), which is an RN engined tug. Have always wanted to do the Ribble link, but a bit of research lately revealed a maximum draft of I think 27”, our boat draws 30”! Anyone done it with a draw of 30” or more, and is there an optimum time of year for maximum depth? Thanking you in anticipation
  6. If the boat in question was still in build, I must admit that I’d probably go for the upgrade, as I’ve always been a biker, currently having a 1400cc 110bhp bike. But I must get those thoughts out of my head now I’m going to be a boater.
  7. As it’s a completed new boat I’m looking at, I wouldn’t have the choice, but from what you’ve all said I’m not put off by the smaller motor and alternator. Thanks all.
  8. Only reason for asking really was that the Ribble link is on our agenda, and I understand a bit of oomph is required.
  9. Looking at a boat with a Beta 38hp engine, most boats I’ve looked with Beta engines have the 43hp engine, apart from the obvious 5hp, are there any other differences/problems? I’m new to boating.
  10. Hi, am considering an Elton Moss new build, anyone bought one or had any experience of the company? I know they’re built part of fully abroad, chec republic I think.
  11. Hi, has anyone any recommendations for WiFi on a boat please?
  12. All sound advice, thanks for that. Planning on mooring at Rufford for first few months, so we have to be able to fit L&L.
  13. We’ve got a couple of 62ft boats on our list of views, am I right in thinking Leeds Liverpool can accommodate them? But Ripon is high on the list of visits, hence 57ft. What is wrong with a cross bed, I’ve seen a few video’s of them and they looked ok.
  14. Our main purpose is to tour the whole network, and for that 57/58 is the required size. Leeds/Liverpool and Yorkshire would be a must for us, and 70ft won’t go there unfortunately, otherwise a bigger boat would be top of the list for the extra space it gives.
  15. ???? Ive been asked how old are ponies when they become horses before now! Had a look at “Gertie” Wow! I was reaching for my cheque book!, wife loved it too, until we saw 70ft. Just too big, but lovely boat.
  16. Haven’t seen Gertie on my travels, but she sounds exactly what I’m looking for, other one sounds rough, I’d give that a miss. Its looking like a long frustrating wait until I can go look at some, want one now!!!! Only other thing keeping me off the network is my elderly horse, 27 this year and looking half that!
  17. Certainly not, you can travel through the hundreds of boats on AD like I’ve done for the last few months ?
  18. You’re preaching to the already converted re engine rooms, and would spend a fair bit of my time in there I reckon. Thanks for all the advantages of said ER, I’ve duly passed them on to the other half, so? Both boats with nice engines are on Apollo Duck, they are very much the minority in the current boats for sale listings unfortunately. Saw one called Oakapple on Rugby boats a while back, and was totally smitten with it, but alas it was sold.
  19. My thoughts entirely, but unfortunately not wife’s, I’m hoping she’ll fall in love with one of the two I’ve found for sale.
  20. I'm in no way committed to this boat, had my own reservations about it, some of which some of you have reiterated. It also has a cruiser stern which I dont particularly like. I would prefer something a little more traditional, and two of my chosen six are just that, whether or not I can talk my other half into one I'm not sure. Its frustrating to think that its going to be some time before I get to see any of them, but I have spoken to the brokerages and expressed an interest. One of my chosen is a private seller, any drawbacks to this?
  21. It’s the inverter that’s rated at 10KVA, not the generator, which I think is 5KVA, but it has about 900Ah of domestic batteries, which would take some charging I’m thinking! Unfortunately it hasn’t got a Gardner or Lister engine, but I don’t expect to get everything on my wish list!
  22. Thanks for the replies. Sorry, by all electric I didn’t mean propulsion too, should have said gas free really. Boat in question has a massive 10KVA inverter. Have done a fair bit of research and have six boats on our list to view, and an extensive wish list. I was a multi skilled maintenance engineer, serving my time initially as a diesel fitter, hence the preference for a vintage engine. Have considered a new build, but don’t like the idea of a long wait.
  23. Hi, my wife and I have decided to take the plunge and buy a narrowboat. The aim is to permanent cruise for a few years, and travel extensively around the network, so it’s a 57/58ft boat we’d like really. Bad timing on our part, with this lockdown in place, but we have chosen six boats so far that we’d like to view. Two of are vintage engine type, and one is an all electric boat. Any general advice on the buying process and boat types would be gratefully received. This is my first post.
