Many years ago, my wife was doing VSO in West Africa, teaching O-level chemistry and maths. One of her students, in the chemistry lab, did exactly that (it was bottled gas) and panic ensued. She calmly walked up to the bench, turned off the gas, handed out a bollocking to the entire class, then refused to teach them again until they learned how to behave. By that evening, the story had got around that she had saved the entire school from burning down. A delegation of students at her door begged her to teach them again.
