We obviously never met as I often told other boaters that it was a shared boat. Not all our fellow sharers were so inclined and I remember arguing with another boater that we hadn't just bought xxx s boat. The other boater had been in the company of the other owner the week before and had been told that it was their boat. Which I suppose in a way it was.

    Gongoozler: "Is this your boat?"

Share owner: "Yes, just under five feet of it".

Last year I bought a tonne of smokeless for £288 delivered. That's £7.20 for 25kg bag. This year the same coal from the same supplier was £499 which is about £12.50/bag. That was back in August. I thought it was expensive at the time but compared to some of the prices I'm seeing here it seems like it was still a good deal.

Supertherm £17.50 per 25kg bag from my coal merchant (free delivery).

we like to keep all tanks as low as possible in winter (we are not liveaboards) so often run out

Translation: "we like to keep our water tanks too low".

Perhaps try keeping them as low as practicable, all things considered, which is a different level?

  4. One of the first things my last BSS inspector did was to look at the back of the CO alarms to see whether the little boat icon had been crossed out. Fortunately, it hadn't, but apparently it often is.

Boat icon crossed out = deemed unsuitable for marine use. I have no idea why.

Surprised no one has mentioned clove hitches which can be useful in some circumstances.

Quite right too. The clove hitch has two major shortcomings: it slips when you want it to stay put, and it jams when you want to undo it.

There's always a better knot (or hitch, or bend) to use on a boat.

    For a canal boat, yes.

A small wind turbine needs to be on a tall mast to avoid some of the wind shear problem: as for the reason why you see so few of them on the cut, well, the answer's in the name. Canals tend to be along the lowest local ground levels, not at the tops of hills.

A wind speed of 2m/s near ground level is a very frequent occurrence, and as Tracy said above, you'll get an output of 15 watts, aka 4/5 of feck-all.

  7. There's no getting around the fact that if the OP spends £12k on a boat, he will get a boat worth little more than £12k, if he is lucky.

If he wants a £30k boat, he'll have to spend about £30k.

On the other hand, he may not be lucky. That's really what it comes down to.

So no, he is not an idiot. The question should be, is he a gambler?

Can they do that legally?  We have a right to navigation, if the tunnel is available, can they refuse its use?

In view of the safety implications CRT might find themselves in trouble if they did not close the tunnel for "operational reasons". The Trust has a duty of care, whether we like it or not.

I did glance at label, and in the past I've had nice crisp white wines from Chile, but unfortunately this one lacked the buttery character desired. <<<

In which case, I might suggest that the Memsahib tries it. Chardonnay is a no-no for her, precisely because of the buttery taste.

Scotch sausage is square. It would go well with cube peas and rectangular potatoes. 🥔😋

I've never heard of square sausage laced with whisky. Where can you get it?

I do wish that more sausage producers made square-section ones to avoid their rolling around in the pan.

Square-section sausages would still go cylindrical during cooking. What you need is square sausage (aka Lorne sausage) without which no Scottish breakfast is complete!

Ooh, lawdy lawd. I love lambs' kidneys, but Mrs. Athy doesn't like the smell of them cooking, so I'm allowed them only once a year, on my birthday.

Lambs' kidneys can be the basis of an excellent pasta sauce too!

    >> I do think that the point nine is rather silly these days.

I've always thought it was silly. I've also wondered whether it was actually legal to offer a price that you cannot actually pay (presumably it is, though).

If you buy say 10li at £1.80 rather than £1.79.9 the difference is a whole penny.  Even if you buy 100 litres, it'll cost a whopping 10p more.

As the Memsahib says, she wouldn't cross the street to pick it up.

I am not a biker and I didn't get the talk but I cringe when I see people improperly dressed on bikes.

It's amazing how many people (especially young bikers) have never heard of de-gloving injuries. Perhaps they should be told that one frequent site for such an injury is the penis?
