  1. I’ll add that one to my list of enquiries.....thanks.
  2. Many thanks, I must confess to being more than a touch concerned at the lack of any detailed questions when speaking to Craft Insure. Saga (they have my car, contents etc) were very detailed.....but who knows. I think I may end with Towergate or Saga (they offered legal cover also). appreciate the time and advice from all ?
  3. Cheers, just spoken to them and they’ve offered cover at a very good price. many thanks
  4. Can anyone offer any advice? just in the process of buying a first boat, but some insurers are declining cover with no experience or qualification. ive had quotes from Saga and Towergate at reasonable cost. Does anyone have any experi nice of these...or other thoughts? many thanks
  5. Cheers all. Plan would be to be largely Marina based in winter, and so have a shoreline to cover electricity although fully accept the advice about winter fuel usage.
  6. my initial thoughts are: say 1.3 litres / hour used, so thats say 4 litres per day...........x 15 days = 60 litres per month......x 1.30 per litre = £80 appx? Is that wide of the mark?
  7. Hi, Can anyone give me a rough guide as to diesel costs.....assuming as live aboards, we cruised about 3 hours per day, every other day....less in winter. I know it is "how long is a piece of string"....but a rough idea? Thanks in advance.
  8. We are looking to buy our first boat.....loads of brokers to choose from. Any thoughts on the ones to choose and avoid?
  9. We spend a few months over in France if we can....and looked in to it for that....so much to consider all the time.
  10. 60 days seems to be max....after that someone has to spend a night there once a month....I think..!
  11. Would be cruising say March to Sept, then at home for the winter months....keeping the house at least for now. We’ve hired a boat for a week and really loved it. Although that was the Mon and Brec.....so not as busy as the main network.
  12. Wow....quite some reactions..but for me I think that Mr Smelly sums it up in the same way that we see it now!
  13. I think it will still take some time for it to sink in with me.....but an issue we need to grasp if we are to do this.
  14. Aah ok....I noticed that the M & B appeared to consist entirely of hire boat traffic....
  15. Very wise words.....I tried to understand Journey with Jonno’s latest missive on batteries etc and couldn’t understand a word...so definitely some reading to do here. In what way is the ambience different....interested to hear
  16. I’ve picked on CRT issues recently.....not easy!
  17. Cheers Martin. My son is an experienced mechanic so hopefully a narrowboat engine has some cross overs with an HGV engine...so I hope that may save some costs. Given that we are retired then having a go at things is all part of the attraction too ...but still all very sobering at this stage!
  18. We’ve hired a boat on the Mon and Brec the other week.....loved every minute. The investment aspect is not an issue...you’ll always lose money when you sell....really appreciate the advice though. Runnin* costs are the main concern. 5k per annum is about what I’d been given to understand for the costs.
  19. Some honest advice needed.....! We are a mid 50’s couple who have retired early and would love to buy a narrowboat to spend 6 months of the year cruising. We’ve heard loads of people say that we shouldn’t hesitate...and others say that it’s financial suicide....! Some honest advice would be very welcome.
