They certainly are if they don't move much.

A lot of CCers (real ones, that is, who go places) rent out their houses so they've got somewhere to live when they've had enough of boating. I guess anyone who can afford a 180k widebeam would do the same as I imagine house price inflation, especially darn sarf, exceeds that of the boat.

Seriously Arthur , how far do you expect a Family living on a Boat to move ? Even CRT quote a minimum of 20 or so mile in a Calendar Year . This idea of Continuous Cruising that some on here have is completely defunct and thank God it is .

Yes, except that these days what you can get is in greater demand so effectively there's less of it.

One person’s restrictions are another person’s improvements. Ask yourself why CRT bothered to make those changes. I suggest because the canal in that area has a history of live aboard boats who hog the moorings and move as little as they can possibly get away with.

It boils down to whether you think the canals are a place to house people, or whether they are a leisure park for everyone’s recreation. My personal view is the latter, but of course I accept that for plenty of people it’s the former. Who is right?

Moorings that are 14 days a year at least improves the chances of a leisure boater being able to find somewhere to moor in that area when passing through on a cruise. Though I’m inclined to agree with your question about how it can be policed, and even whether it’s legal.

Social Housing Nick and surprisingly enough just not for the needy . The GU on the South East is literally awash with £180,000 Widebeams whilst People either rent out their Houses or pass them onto their children . A Liveaboard Boater is a complete hindrance to the CRT .

  3. Everywhere I go I seem to be noticing changes to Moorings which basically implies even more restrictions . Newlands for example is now no more with Mooring being banned in front of the New Marina at Campbell Park , just North of there which is Bridge 82 ( By the Winding Hole ) is now also becoming 48 hr Mooring which will no doubt guarantee a Bonanza for the new Pub  which is currently half complete . Fenny Stratford Moorings have now been signposted as being 14 Days in any Calendar Year though quite how this will be enforced I dont know .

Possibly if someone is desperate for a boat, but only at a lot less cash. But still a horrible shape and of dubious resale value. As for that front door handle, it doesn't even fit the door stile!

It beggars belief that £50k is being asked for this , didn't Gayzing buy one of these last year although a shorter length ? He bought his from Whilton , it was originally called Hosanna and was moored on the offside between Fenny and Willowbridge on the GU South . I have always looked out for Gayzing but havent encountered him thus far .

The oft quoted issue of the GCR’s loading gauge is misleading. Berne gauge is a structure (loading) gauge and therefore applies to a train on a single track. For the overall design of a railway the structure gauge has to be considered in combination with track separation. Being 3150mm wide normal passing clearance between two tracks of Berne gauge clearance is achieved at a track separation of 3250mm. This is less than the standard track interval dimension of 3405mm (between centre lines) for GB railway infrastructure. Hence in terms of the width of the corridor the entire GB network is technically wide enough for Berne gauge, however it’s structure envelope is not necessarily conformant.

For higher speed running the aerodynamic effects between passing trains takes precedence over physical clearance when determining track separation and at the speeds for which HS2 is being designed technical specifications require separation of at least 4500mm for which the GC formation would not conform and would require rebuilding. The minimum track separation for any new railway is 3800mm. GB railways can only utilise lower values when upgrading existing railways - which would not apply to the GC - but our historic standards are only really fit for 125mph maximum (140mph at a push). The long tunnels on both ECML and WCML do not generally operate at 125mph due to aerodynamic considerations.

There’s nothing wrong with the engineering philosophy of HS2 (in fact I’d argue it is the strong point of the proposal). The key issue is about the need.

I found that really fascinating Captain Pegg . I am all for big Capital Projects being enacted especially in these times of historically low interest rates on borrowed money .

See my previous post and, in case, how many decades of experience do you think you need to gain appropriate skills? To my knowledge, Maffi is hardly a newcomer (!) and has been helpful to me in the past. OTOH, I have experienced a (former?) member of this forum whose behaviour was intended to be intimidating - did not work, though!

I think Maffi has made his point of view regarding Boaters and those that have the temerity to moor a Boat pretty plain Mike , dont you ? I simply took issue with being lectured to regarding the best practise of Ash Disposal by a bloke who treats any moored boats by his own admission with complete contempt and disregard . He then tried to cover up this by alleging a series of falsehoods about myself for which I took him to task . It is what it is Mike and I wish the bloke well .

Oh really!  I remember you, you were a right gobby twat. I seem to remember you threatened me with physical violence. Sorry but I will not slow down to 'tick over' for 2/3 miles of boats. The whole subject of speed is subjective. The rules dont say tick over what ever your stupid sign says. I will slow down to between 1 and 2 mph depending on the width of the canal. If you think I am going to spend 3 hours going through MK at tick over, you have another think coming. If you Continuous Moorers were to be more considerate and stop mooring a boat every 50/100 yards. along the canal we could all get on with what the canals are a bout "Boating", not mooring.  Get yerself a life and move yer boat instead of threatening those who do! Try mooring in groups to lessen the impact on those who want to move. Learn to tie ya boat up properly!

And watch where you dump your ash!

You are a complete Liar , I never threatened you with any Physical Violence whatsoever nor do I possess any Slow Down signs , I can only assume that was some other who was equally annoyed about your complete contempt for long established Boating Practise and indeed lack of courtesy for your fellow boaters . Sadly you are yet another of these Blogging Types new to the Canal who feels an entitlement to condescendingly lecture the rest of us . Tell me something , is that wig something you have recently obtained and how is it best affixed when piloting your speeding Boat ? I did notice it remained relatively stable though to be fair you did place your hand on your head . At nearly sixty and suffering from thinning locks I am keen to hear your reply .

Everywhere I go I see piles and piles of ash dumped along the hedgerow, Even in Braunston, where the towpath is narrow in places, lazy itinerant boaters dump their ash.  Ash is two of three things. If its coal based ash it is TOXIC waste! and fly-tipping. Nothing grows through it. If it is wood based ash it is rubbish and constitutes fly-tipping. Yes I know wood ash is good for the garden and in your own garden you can do what you like. Either way all ash should be disposed of properly, that is to say cooled, bagged, and binned.

Last Sunday as we walked across the main road bridge, in Braunston to the car, we saw flames and palls of smoke coming out of the hedgerow at the back of Vegas Racing. This will be the third time I have witnessed a fire in that short line of trees, and a lazy itinerant boater is to blame. I am sure it has happened more times than that. Fortunately another boater was arriving on the scene to deal with it. I wonder how many small creatures get baked alive in these circumstances.

There are those who suggest putting it in the puddles on the tow path, stupid idea, fine ash and water mixed together makes gooey sludge!

What is so hard about bagging it an binning it? There is no reason to dump your ash. When using coal, at the end of a 25 kg bag of coal, you have an empty bag and its FREE! Put your ash in that! You will bin the bags anyway. Now I know some here will talk about hot ash in plastic bags and they are almost right, but you can alleviate that problem. Try one of these Clarke CHT848 12 Litre Stainless Steel Bucket With Lid - Machine Mart - Machine Mart £19.19 is nice shiney Stainless Steel and will last for ever,  ( there is a 16 litre size) If you cant afford one of these you could try one of these Draper 12L Galvanised Steel Bucket - Machine Mart - Machine Mart £7.98.  it's Galvanised so not so shiney, and should last 6/7 years or more. I have one on my roof. It stands on an old piece or Hexboard to stop it damaging the paint work. I burn solid fuel from September to May so there is always a plentiful supply of bags.

Place ash into the bucket to cool and when cool empty into the plastic bag. If you are not sure its cool put some water in it, it will soon tell you. (mind your eyes).

Fly-tipping is a despicable thing to do. It damages the environment. and kills wildlife. We as boaters should be looking after the environment we live in not

    burning it down!

Word of warning, if you do get a bucket please do not store hot ash on your front/rear decks. Until the heat is gone the ashes will still be producing Carbon gasses that could get in through your ventilators. I leave mine on the tow path!

You want to forget about the Ash and concentrate on slowing down for moored Boats the next time you are passing through Milton Keynes . I had cause to remonstrate with you some

time back in a restrained way I may add as you had a female present , you on the other hand had an appalling attitude .

A valid view - but, lest we forget, boats can look very different "in the flesh" from the way they appear in a broker's photographs, so physically seeing them is no bad thing.

I totally agree and especially if you are a comparative newcomer . I just worry that so many People pile into this game without the proper research and I mean no criticism of the Poster by saying that as they often genuinely dont know what to look for .

The suitable boats I have found on Apollo Duck have been situated all over the country yes. But a good handful of them have been around the Midlands. Ones closest to me in terms of geography seem to come with a London price tag and I have been less impressed by what is on offer down south for my budget.

I am going to drop you a PM with my number in a minute and if I can help in any way I shall .

    Hi All,

I've posted a couple of times regarding my intention to buy my first liveaboard narrowboat.

Long story short I found a boat that I thougth was for me, drove 300 miles to view it, and the boat was not as advertised so I left it. I currently reside in Brighton so there are very few brokerage's even within 100 miles of where I'm situated.

My new plan to to rent an Airbnb/travelodge/hotel etc around the Daventry area once lockdown is lifted so I am closer to the action and can view boats coming on the market immdiately.

I have also given my details to the majority of brokerages around the Midlands and North with what I'm looking for but I've only recieved a few calls regarding what they have coming in. It all seems rather slow and as I'm a cash buyer with a decent budget who is looking for a liveaboard immediately, I thought I would be a somewhat desirable client.

Have any of you dont something similar to this? My plan would be to stay up around the brokerage area for around 2 weeks...if not longer.

ANY advice would be greatly appreciated as always.

    Thanks

"Closer to the action " what in Daventry ? What I am not clear about is what you hope to achieve by coming up here ? Surely you should be onto a website such as Apollo Duck gauging the suitability of the boats that fall within your budget and acting accordingly . I dont mean to sound negative but I suspect its your lack of research that is letting you down rather than your location .

Boats are selling like hot cakes at the moment, so brokers don't need to make the effort of ringing round potential purchasers on their list. And if they know you are 100+ miles away they will judge that you are less likely to come and view than the chap who is 10 miles away.

Is it length based or price based David , I have a 70 foot I will be selling in a month or two and someone told me they can be difficult to shift .

Think pets being sold online, such as Gumtree should be banned. I heard from a GSD forum that morons pick up the dogs for using them for baiting in dog fighting.

It's terrifying imagining why dog thieves do what they do, I'm pretty sure it's not because they 'love' dogs.

What annoys me is the attitude that, "because it hasn't happened to me, it doesn't happen".  Most interractions I've had with police (or, in fact  anyone) have been fine, especially as I grew older and my hair got shorter. And, no  P, you raised the issue, not me. I merely pointed out the error in a couple of people's positions.

And you, my son, aren't worth bothering with. As I said, keep it for the politics section so the rest of us can try and forget views like yours exist. And that's my last word on the matter.

And, back to the topic, cruises and overnight stays are perfectly legal after April 12th, which is good, cos I'm going on one.

    Good .

How very last-century! Surely, just as no one builds "flats" any more, they're all "apartments", so no one ever has a "mongrel", they have a "cross".

  16. Do they pick on Black People Arthur ? Personally I have never thought it as simple as that . Firstly lets be clear what we mean when we say Black People , can we exclude Indians and Pakistanis ? Can we exclude Africans ? I believe in the main we can , Which leaves People of caribbean descent .

Is it true that this Demographic Group accounts for most of the street crime in London ? I believe it does and thats the Policemans problem .
