  1. Oh Bee so true so true, I believe in having an idea of what you want , list of things maybe and this chat with everybody is about is getting that list sorted both in terms of what's on the list and the priority those things get. Tapping this wealth of experience has been educational. Then comes the real world and that's when you compromise, something of a dying art, from what I can see boaters are keepers of the flame! Living on a boat requires some ( lots ofcompromise). My wife compromised when we married , but obviously she had her priorities right as we are 36 y not out ! ( she thinks I am lovely and laughs at me a lot too!!!) you sound a lucky man.
  2. Bit stupid ( me) but then my calc was only rough actually quite genned upon batteries very aware its always the load that dictates current flow , batteries in lots of ways are a moving target. You quite correctly point out soc then there is age endless design criteria , lithiums appear ( note said appear) better and quite popular at mo getting more affordable and all charge storage devices "fill up" exponentially first bit quick last bit so your absolutely right two rounds of toast will take 12 minute to put back times the X factor BEDS The Boss and I only 5'6 so 6' OK ( for us) but all other comments enlightening
  3. Just got back to this, so going back a bit and please don't all shout at once but working through the toaster figures on our toaster rounded up to 1800w max on 240v is a 7.5 A device which on 12 volts is 150 A so the 10 v which allows for system losses it becomes 180 A assuming it runs for 10 minutes that would be 30 Ah which if I am getting the drift of this would take an alternator rated at 175 A ( call it 150 A again due to losses ) and assuming a decent battery and well organised charging system which charges at 2.5 A per minute consequently the 30A draw down would take 12 minutes to put back. SOLID fuel stove seems yes absolute but in the middle ish of boat GAS cooking seems to be the way both hob and oven Modern Diesel engine yes Proper lengthways bed why but agree on 4'6'' NEVER ever haves are Electric cooking even if gennie is feasable well the gennie anyway Composting bog Jury seems out but they don't use water. Diesel stove ( ok as back up ) why have two, diesel central heating and central multifuel Cross beds why not (nicely) Pram hoods!! as far as I know not possible on a trad 60 foot makes more sense than 57 unless u realy are going to stay in one very tiny part of the canal system all your life. Still trying to sort out length question- Liverpool Leeds a must but 60 seems to work for that but maybe not canals around Huddersfield but then do you need to get absolutely everywhere! Alan may I compliment you on you galley looks sorted, one question which I could not work out from photo, is the boat Standard or reverse layout . What is it about ecofans This has been a fabulous learning experience and we will look at lots of boats and are discussing a good 2nd hand again but they seem like gold plated rocking horse ****
  4. love the jest, lap now on a shore line and I love roast lamb and yorkies
  5. Aware Nb not a house, comments about domestic in response to 40 A grill just not accurate. A boat whole different ball game and hence why I am talking to you, well I won't be as battery on Lap is flat. Your last i/p was quite informative on how to rate devices and that we need to alter our thinking. I /we are taking on board ( no pun intended) your words.
  6. Hmmmm every boat I have reviewed had an oven, gas mostly but not exclusively. Talking domestically, we have a dual fuel Rangemaster gas hob 2 large electric, one fan, ovens plus grill ( never used to be honest) .It is supplied on 6mm T&E ( think modern standard is 10 mm like showers) on a 30 amp MCB. While I am anxious to learn about Nbs realising I know nowt, I have taught 16th Ed think they are on 17th now but that was yrs ago, as in many and rewired the odd house.Has to be born in mind these things cycle their loads. Houses generally have a 60 A main fuse though that could be changing too as we get more energy hungry( see thread on Nbs and breadmakers!). Anyway, your comments have set us thinking about the gas question, the head chef aka boss girl says don't need a grill. Asume we could manage toaster on batteries. The heating element would run nicely on dc, power wise, rms equates to dc, anybody have a 12v toaster? Yer current would be horrific and dc transformers only work twice, switch on and off .
  7. Hence gen set but not ruled gas out entirely as gas hobs are the best but coupled with electric ovens. A couple of electric boats as in Hybrids gone gasless so power must be manageable but who knows.
  8. Single Electric oven with grill at eyeline induction hob plus mwave AND the pub well nice to dream, but then the boss can seriously produce so the galley I as said critical.
  9. Tar ( sorry no pun intended) two pack mandatory and suitable for rivers ( apparently there are 2 types but need confirmation on that), yep into the zinc thing , Air/Natures head my personal preferences but relieved ( pun again) your experience confirms our thoughts. Engines Beta Marine 43/ Barrus 45 silenced . We love the sound of a truly traditional engine but don't want to live with one. would like a gen set but no gas . Questions are endless answers diverse oh well.
  10. I'm going to be brave, never owned a boat, have boated only in colder months, in fact should be on a trip be now, up by the Anderton but they cancelled frozen up! We are considering very seriously being CC 'ers and probably can afford a new boat( probably). The boss is up for it more than me , it is a big move but hey be dead soon! Consequently I am draft designing a 57 ft boat well the living in bits, have studied 100's of nb layouts. So having sussed you need a trad with you fire in the middle(ish) on the port side , toilets are a issue but pumpouts are out, galley is critical, we like to cook, would like a cross bed but don't want a dinette and the list goes on. Aware you need to balance the boat, cookers washing machines etc. Electrical power is something I can grasp also water.Pro bow thruster ( been stuck on numerous shallow bits on GU). Naturally we are not ignoring the important gubbins like ENGINES and how the shell moves in the water. So that's the plan its is not a 5 min plan 3 days in Crick in May. I/we expect a deluge of comments but that's the point of this
  11. Sorry not wishing to offend but despite the fact I do read all of a thread due age it don't stick as well as it did under my very grey hair and everybody has an opinion so keeping the floor open! I take all serious answers seriously and chuckle at the obvious funnies. I suppose I was actually summarizing where we had got to , looking for any final disagreements . So again thanks to all contributors.
  12. Ok TP's are ok assuming they have solved the serviceability issues , the pulley comment makes sense and not just aesthetically, but you still have to run the engine and if not cruising you have to assume the revs would not be optimal for the generators ( in any set up) so the rolls royce solution is a separate gen set funds and space allowing matched to a suitable all singing and dancing control box but taking on board that there are TWO engines to maintain. I take it having an electrical motor drive to drive the under water fan set up is a complete no no, as that does seem to off a source of considerable electrical power.Incidentally , Honda have joined the hybrid club, Civic first followed by CRV so one assumes we are seeing the onset of death of the diesel. Ok I am going to ask that question Batteries, having got a gen set installed wot to we store the juice in.
  13. Now I am really sorry I mentioned the T word and what desperately don't need is another session of T humour with a Trekess overtone, lets get back to the electrical theme and discuss Travel POWER as they seem to be an alternative to Gen Sets.
