  1. Thank you! Yes i was actually keeping an eye on these two! Not sure my confidence with risk of survey though, but still, will consider for sure! I'll definitely join in next March!
  2. Ok, well i will prepare for that , and hope for better! Ok thanks. I would never change a boats name, but is it sacrilege to change it's colour too? i don't want to encourage anymore bad luck on a 5mm hulled 80's springer....
  3. Haha, that sounds achievable! did you do it in dry storage? i suppose its impossible/impractical to do it moored up in a marina instead? And ok, but an eye for an eye, a brush for a brush
  4. Non pc option sounds good to me, i'm sure i could muster some kind of motley gang to help. what are signs it needs doing, as i expect most boat's paint have signs of wear and tear?
  5. Well thank you! And i'm not one of those people anyway, so thoughts taken on board!
  6. And if done by the boatowner - prep = sanding it completely back? and how many layers are recommended - say it was the marine enamel paint? I'm not scared of paintbrushes! And so if you have pitting on a 5mm boat, that takes it below insurability; say 4mm, if you over-plate would you do it with 5mm steel, to bring it close to new boat spec, and therefore longer lifespan?
  7. What would an average month boatlife spend for you be, minus general life (food, drink, boat parties) , and would this be considering saving up for the inveitable repairs + blacking, or just covering everything else?
  8. If a boat hull survey says this: Construction material: Steel plate. Specification of original thickness of plate approximately 5mm bottom plate, counter and hull Its not uncommon then, and not problematic if looked after?
  9. e.g every 2 year blacking/annodes + out of the water costs insurance p/a BSS Canal License p/a mooring .vs. constantly cruising p/m gas p/w pump outs boat maintenance engine services anything else? the cost of the boat is fronted by me, but from there the monthly/yearly costs will be split between two of us
  10. As in, the survey showed all of the steel that they surveyor was good enough (in mm readings), and just needed blacking + new annodes rather than needing any over/re-plating
  11. Is it common that a surveyor can doctor his survey if he knows the boat owner? I guess first thing would be to see a copy of the survey, and see if it looked thorough?
  12. Sorry, clarifying what i meant - the current owner had a survey 2 weeks ago, and no work was needed on hull to pass, so they just blacked and replaced annodes. Should this survey and work be taken trust, or, if you were to see it to buy, would you get another survey done anyway?
  13. Ok thoughts - considering it covers everyones advice about hull etc etc, and costs of redoing a boat - as in it is all done - Is it advisable to trust a survey someone else has carried out 2 weeks ago ? knowing it would be 2 years before you got her out of the water to see for yourself? https://www.facebook.com/groups/narrowboatsforsaleuk/permalink/960047680813977/?sale_post_id=960047680813977
  14. I guess at least the UK is pretty small... comparably Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, I was trying to be sardonic in my reply, I didn't like Bee calling anything old dull and small! Anyway, things we dislike in others we fear in ourselves.... And yes, taken me a few days, but I just about got to grips about those two sides - but it is important to look at both sides? As it could be rusting inside out, as well as pitting outside in? And anyway, slipping through water at 4mph, or crawling through at 4mph, not sure if i'd notice!
  15. Yep, so exterior hull and interior plate would need thorough examination, thanks! And i don't have thousands to spend on a purchased boat anyway, hence the restriction to looking for old, dull, small boats. So that isn't a risk...
  16. In terms of hull work - I have seen lots of videos/blogs about blacking and can see lots of peoples NB's have been blacked annoded with care, and they have no overplating or replating, and just minor pitting. BUT! What if a boat that had been replated/overplated had a whole the entire hull redone? Is this something people do? Is it really a whole new hull, or just plates fitted over the existing one? The Springer owner said it was quoted at £3000, for her 36fter, and that if I wanted it to be done, she would included it in the price of the boat. But yep, thanks for colander warning - i suppose scented candles and buckets won't suffice in this case!
  17. So the green boat 14,000, with grp top ( i know grp top could leak, but how does other info he sent look? ) Hi, sent this to people earlier today who enquiried. Licensed until August next year but crt licenses are no longer transferable. Hi, yes still for sale... I'm inundated with messages so I'll just send you what I've sent other people today!... Hi, She needs general tidying in and out. Hi, She's a 1976 boat built by hesford marine. Boat safety certificate until August next year. No mooring fees as she continuously cruises (moves every 2 weeks and has to cover 20 miles annually to meet license requirements). Been doing this for 4 years. Engine is 4 years old, it's made by Marine Power, but I forget the model number. I have the manual for it though at home. Got 400 watts of solar on the roof. Twin leisure batteries. Full 12v system and also a small sinewave inverter to run the 240v sockets. Although these have been rarely used. 4 year old Aarrow wood burner. Eberspacher diesel heater. LPG instant water heater. CRT license is about £670 a year from memory. Last survey was about 7 years ago, there was nothing drastic and before being blacked she had 'isolated areas of pitting' filled with weld. I can forward that survey to you when I get home Monday morning. She's due for hull blacking and is booked in for 1st of December (there's a years waiting list! Booking is sold with the boat at a cost of around £500 if wanted. Reason for sale is that we have been renting her out for the last 4 years but current tenant has just this morning given notice and I'm soon moving to Shropshire 4 days a week to start a new big project on some land I've bought so won't be here to do any of the work that needs doing (painting exterior, fixing curtain poles, mending holes in the canvas cratch covers, servicing engine etc etc etc) before finding a new tenant. The pics on the listing are 2 years old, all I had on my phone! She does now need the exterior rubbing down and painting. My wife doesn't have time to do any of it either. I realise it's the wrong time of year really to sell but I don't have a day a fortnight to go over and move her myself over winter. Hence the decision to sell 'as is'.
  18. Thank you yes, i think too maybe if the investment was less, i would go for it and embrace a project, and learning NB's inside out through restoration from the get go. But it is the first boat i've seen, and probably a bit of patience, with learning and looking would pay off in the long run. Thanks!
  19. I think when I get a NB i'll try that process where you don't wash your hair for ages, and then eventually it becomes self cleaning. Stay clear!
