Thank you everyone, I have a husband who is very hands on we have lived "off grid" for 11 years, we are going out again on Saturday to learn to manoeuvre and sail for a few hours and will have lessons from a local training boater who moors up next door. I am also going travelling for some time abroad so I dont intend on spending any time alone without learning how to change gas bottles etc. I have stipulated that if this does not work out the boat will be sold and a house will be bought instead. -

Thank you Jim, you are right in that it is a very serious decision to make and my hubby is in a huge rush to buy the boat with out having spent a night on a wide beam, me neither but I am not so keen, the cost of mooring has put me off, seeing as we will be charged for everything else on top of the £1000 every 4 months! plus £1000 a year license. I also am not comfortable with living carefully as regards how often I poo! this boat has an extra brown water tank for another 600 ltrs so I guess that's a help but more pumping out maybe, anyway because its 60x12ft then that limits where we can travel to, the initial idea was to save money which one could do with a smaller narrow boat where its possible to cc, but this isn't an option if you are employed and must be on time. Its all the gadgets and gizmos that my hubby is excited by, and I have worked out that there is some tension between people who view flash boats with a degree of hostility. and this is a shiny flash top spec boat. The other residents at the marina were a bit off with us. The caretaker was very kind and welcoming but its definitely a closed community. We shall see what develops. -

We are giving up a similar set up to have a new life doing something more adventurous , but think I might secretly be a bit of a coward. -

ok, Ive got to start somewhere, we are going out on this boat tomorrow to have a go for a few hours with the owner, he has suggested we spend a weekend on it to experience sleeping on it. If we are both working when do we get the chance to spend "weeks" trying this out? I get your point, Im not parting with one penny if I cant stand the motion sickness thing, what are the other awful things that will happen? Why? why is this a wind up? -

the mooring fees shocked me. £4500 a year it is as expensive as living in a house if we pay mooring fees, its a large boat to try to CC with. -

Hebden Bridge is like this now, I was shocked when I visited a few weeks ago, I used to live there and there we no narrow boats at all, now its bumper to bumper, very trendy thing to do apparently. I like Gin.....maybe the answer to my issue is to be permanently soaked. -

Ive read about this motion response once back on land, but why experience it only on a boat that weighs about 35tons and barely moves and not in cars or motor bikes or planes or ferries? Well Im not a luuvy hippie, Im a girl from Swindon ! who is very quickly going off the idea of living aboard. -

This is a huge risk to pay £100,000 to buy a boat I cant stand being on, I really hope its temporary, we are going out for 2 hours tomorrow to test it and Im under an enormous amount of pressure from hubby to NOT be ill. Whats the K and A? -

Well thanks, my father in law tried to thrust a packet of travel sickness pills at me but I said , I am going to live on this boat! It is moored, permanently , the owner says he has been out twice in 4 years but up to pump out every 5 weeks. -
I need some advice quickly! So we go to view a stunning wide beam, 60ft by 12ft, its perfect, hubby loves it, we can afford it, one huge problem......I had motion sickness , well not sickness but lightheaded, dizzy, weird horrible feeling, I got off and on again, stood in the fresh air.. but it didnt go, it eased off a bit standing in the middle of the boat and talking to distract myself, please can anyone advise me , is this normal? does it go away? Ive never had this on any other form of travel ever before, does anyone have any advice? please.

moorings? ha ha ha residential moorings are non extistant

I think people forget the other world of constant mind numbing , exhausting, stress of every day full time employment, that's harder than living on a boat, running a house with constant up keep, endless bills, annoying neighbours with their screaming children and cars driving up and down the bloody street because they cant be bothered to walk 5 yards to the shop! we have 5 lawns to mow, hedges to clip, well the list goes on, much easier to live on a small narrow boat. -

mmmmm, this is all very well but what about Karen Millen handbags? my extensive Biba wardrobe? are you trying to put me off? Im not really into roughing it, am I completely disillusioned here? no white fur rugs and gold leafed cupboards? the whole Rosie and Jim thing was not what I had in mind. £ 7000 A YEAR? that's as much as a house. -
