Must be very close
There is another large house, also built about 10 years ago, between this house and Lindy's. It is on land which was once part of the Bridgewater Boats site.

No. It was built about 10 years ago on the site of an old garage - and it has a tiny garden and no mooring!

If you really want a proper test kit, use a Microb Monitor2, which was developed by Air BP and ECHA. The problem is that each test costs about £50, so unless you have some very good friends from the old days, probably a non-starter!

We have started using Phurnacite again (after a 35 year gap and in a cottage, not a boat) and have been surprised at the huge amount of ash which it produces. I am certain that it didn't used to be like that.

And a burglar's delight - you can pop the catch on the top light in a matter of seconds (when I was young, my mother was forever locking herself out of the house and it was my job to break in)!

I want to see how you are going to connect things that have terminals built in with 95mm cable.
Reduced palm tube terminals might help. They are typically about 70% of the width of a normal tube terminal, which sometimes can make all the difference!

I don't think that this one in Berkhamsted has appeared here yet:

Oh Seven 767 888255
Seconded. He surveyed the last two boat we sold and, rather bizarrely, I ended up representing the buyer at one of the surveys. He was very thorough and I strongly recommend him.

The winding hole at the station is very wide and deep. The only problem is that some boats find it a very convenient place to moor - but even if there is a widebeam one there, you could still turn a 48' boat.
The one near Bulbeggars Lane can be OK, but the owner of the land might come and shout at you. Also, the water level in that pound is a bit unpredictable.
You could probably also wind at the rear of the Esso garage, but there are frequently moored boats in the way.

The best plug top ever made, with many great features - one of the best being that all the cores are cut to the same length!

I arrived at BEM in April 1994 the cost was £640 a year, we left in March 2019 and the cost was £4500 a year. Three different boats during that time but the same mooring.
Goodness, was it really that cheap in the early days?!?

Having used large numbers of them in my working life, my first choice would be Kraus & Naimer - they are still pretty well made.

Thinking about the topography, I reckon that the paddles were probably raised on more than one lock - but not on all of them.

Apparently the incident caused flooding as far down as Billet Lane in Northchurch, so a fair volume of water must have been lost.

Blimey thats a fair amount of water! Amazed it didn't take the towpath out. Thanks for letting us know.
The south side is the non-towpath side of Dudswell and the land there is a bit lower than the canal. I suspect that the water went over the bank just above the lock, but my informant's message was lacking in detail!
-
According to my man on the ground, there was flooding in Dudswell last night, with water getting into the gardens of houses on the south side of the village.
-
I will ask a friend who lives in Dudswell if his house is underwater!

I'm surprised Wikipedia actually lists some of those in the 'Offensive' category. The one I learned is not there, but could be formed by combining 2 or 3 of them.
There is one word missing from the list for the one I was "taught"!

The latest batch of resistors I ordered, as well as being tiny for 0.4 Watt ones, seems to have the stripes painted in Farrow & Ball colours - very muted and more or less indistinguishable from each other.
Has anyone managed to purge from their memory any of the very non-PC mnemonics for the colour code which were in common use 50 years ago - or do they immediately spring to mind?

Two photos from the Berkhamsted Local History & Museum Society Facebook page:

The first one is above the Riser and the second probably heading towards Lock 56.

My first ever job was writing microcode for a bit slice CPU which ran to 4 boards! I enjoying writing the floating point maths routines. I think!
Out of curiosity, AMD 2900, Intel 3000, one of the TI ones or something even weirder?

You knew of it too, did you, or perhaps there several of them around the country? The one I'm referring to was in Baker Street, London; I lived in the next street from 1978 to 1982, so it would have been operational during that period. I never went in (well, I got real school dinners, at least during term time, so I didn't need to!) so I don't know what it was like inside.
I think that the first one was in the City, but the one I knew was in Baker Street. One visit was more than enough - primarily due to the other patrons, rather than the food.

assuming it wasn't the sort of school dinners that Boris and his ilk enjoyed in their various clubs?
It was designed to pander to their fantasies! The School Dinnergirls (waitresses) were one its main attractions when it opened (reputedly).

Apologies for resurrecting this old topic, but previous attempts to contact the current owner failed and there is now some urgency to establish contact.
Modified quote:
"If anyone is is contact with the current owner of my former boat Batavia (a grey tug with many rivets), please could you ask him to contact either me or the company which is storing some boat stuff for him?"
Many thanks
