That would be a short sighted decision. My Labrador cleaned the entire area of goose poo last year - it'll cost them if they need to pay Virador to do it instead...  ;)

I agree but heard that wardens were gonna fine dog owners cos apparently dogs upset the bird life there and also they were complaing about dog owners not cleaning up after their dogs (reasonable IMO) but what about all the plastic and other rubbish?

Good point..they dont know !! I had thought of ringing them and asking  for a refund as I have been unable to go out on the cut for 3 months due to the lockdown.

I dont want to intimidate the examiner so may just write to BSS office and ask their opinion. Thanks

Funnily enough I spoke to Ru at Armada Boats who does my blacking and he told me that he thought the examiner was wrong. Considering that Armada has hire boats then he could well be right

A fire risk maybe but how large a risk is open to question. If this was my boat I would ask the examiner to show me the relevant in writing from the BSS office. If he was unable or unwilling I would be imidiately emailing and writing to the BSS office demanding site of the regulation or they issue a pass certificate. it is only by boaters doing that will the 4esult be the examiners stop claiming best practice and personal opinion are in fact BSS regulations.

I dont want to intimidate the examiner so may just write to BSS office and ask their opinion. Thanks

Is it a failure? Asking for air lock problems but until I am told differently not a fail as long as the supply has a shut off valve on it.

There is a shut off valve by the tank but the examiner said that there was a fire risk without the non-return valve. From my perspective, if there was fire in the engine bay I am unlikely to want to put my hand down to close off the tap on the fuel line which is under the deck  and could be surrounded by flames/smoke, I would tackle it with an extinguisher

The whole system is a joke and nothing but "jobs for the boys".

I had a BSS pass in 2015 with these fire extinguishers :

You're right...considering that many peoples BSS have expired and there is a tailback for tests due to Covid then theoretically boaters shouldnt be using their boats. My local 'enforcer' from CRT told me not to worry and to get the BSS before my licence expires...which is Jan 2021 !!

I still think if it was a potential problem on a previous BSC it should have been noted as an *advisory* at that time, rather than a failure now.

What other items did your boat fail on Markeymark?

Fire extinguishers (  11 years out of date) so have bought new ones.

Woodburner not fixed to floor...easy to fix

Battery cable too small (he says it must be 25mm sq)..easy to fix

  6. 13 minutes ago, Rob-M said:

Just having the same thoughts, if nothing has changed from previous inspections then why a fail this time...?

I know what you are saying and I would have thought it would have passed but the examiner said it was a new reg. Funnily enough the fire extinguishers were well out of date (2009) and yet the boat had a BSS 4 years ago so maybe whoever did it was a cowboy ( I bought the boat  3 years ago). The examiner also said the cable from the split charge relay was too small and I would have to change that too to a 25mm sq  but that cable had been there for years too...its most odd. Anyway if I have to put a  non-return valve in then is it easy to do myself?

  7. I have just failed my BSS on a few items but one has stumped me. I have a 1987 boat with a BMC 1.5 and at present the return diesel pipe (spill line?) goes from the second AV filter on the block back to the first filter...which is a failure. I have been given 2 options . (a ) reroute return pipe direct to tank or (b) put in non-return valve -

where does the non-return valve go....in-line on the return pipe between the 2 filters,  or should I take off a Tee from the pipe from the tank to the first filter and put the return from the second filter  to the Tee? Can I buy a compression fitting non-return valve with olives to save soldering and how do I block off the outlet where the return pipe went back into the first fillter?

    Any help appreciated ...thanks.

I just feel too many folk really don't care any more.We go out of our way to make sure neighbours aren't upset by our music etc. Each time we ask,we're told no problem. We've even said don't feel you have to be polite. Why do some folk feel the need to be so very loud ?We moor in one of the best marinas around(on the Shroppy) & even there, there are folk with seriously yappy dogs.Yep,I know dogs bark but they should be able to be quiet.

As a long time dog owner, its the owners not sorting out their dogs thats the problem. Locking dogs up all day in a house or a boat is unfair to the dogs..they bark cos they are stressed  and want out or are excited. I turn down work if i cant take my dogs with me..they are my friends for life..... my kids

I did meet a boater who had suffered serious anti-social behaviour including thieving from another boat. He waited till said boater was away and drilled a hole in the bottom of his boat.

    .................Dave

Yes, a couple of years ago at Foxton some pikies in a plastic boat moored on the water point and when they came out of Bridge 66, pissed up I asked them not to moor at the water point. The largest and fattest threatened to' fill my head in' swinging his arms at me so I stood my ground ( I'm skinny as a rake) and said " Well go on then fat-arse" and didnt move and he was stunned that I didnt run back to my boat. His mates told him  to get back on the boat and they left for Market Harborough. I remember the boat well and my drill is ready !

Crick is also in a sort of hollow which can trap smoke in winter, and the local shop sells twice as much housecoal as smokeless. It can get a bit smoggy. The phone (O2) signal is also noticable by it's absence you need to go up the bank.

I agree, every time I go through Crick the phone signal is abysmal.not existent on my mobile

  11. Hillmorton Locks open still. I got back  2 hours ago and at least 4 boats passed my mooring...one hire boat ! and the rest  CCers I guess.

My view is that if you self-isolate and dont use locks then for CCers to move to water points etc. is fine. If they all have to congregate at one point it will be chaos as there wont be space so its fair play that some have to move to get services and take precautions.

Thinking of offering a place to breast up cos I got a home mooring and there would be space as there is so little traffic. I got water too but no sanny.

Maybe dig a pit latrine could be good idea.

:) The guy is struggling, and there are few things worse than all 3 cassettes being full when you need one. As long as hand washing takes place, and they dont get too close to each other, and nobody coughs or sneezes, they should be fine.

Its fine , honest. I will sort it by going to Braunston instead...silly me. Thanks anyway

I've been to a small B & Q today, also Screwfix, both [?same company?] have strict procedures, but is S/fix someone was leafing thru a catalogue with bare hands. They have to be told. DO NOT TOUCH COMMUNAL THINGS WITH BARE HANDS

Doesn't that rather complicate married life in bed ?

How difficult would it be to reverse that far? I would probably quite enjoy the challenge, although maybe not in a 70ft boat.

Cool, I'm on a 55 footer so I'ĺl let you know when you can come over and reverse it for me. Nice one !

If you are not up for it you could still carry the cassette a mile for me ...another challenge.Thanks.

However I can only pay 'minimum wage 'at the moment unless you are on Universal credit and if so you will have to do it for free under the guise of 'looking for work´

Please stop using the term lockdown. Nobody is locked down.

Considering the word has now become generic I doubt that peeps will stop using it. As a word it fails my spell checker so its a made up word that is probably not in the Uxbridge Dict. Have you got any suggestions for a different suitable expression that might be more apt to the situation?. If so the you might have to sell it to the MSM

Perhaps some clever dick on here can come up with an acronym thats apt for boaters but expresses the sentiment. All ideas on  a post card please.

BTW, I suppose you have sussed out the name of this thread?

I suggest waiting for CRTs next update at https://canalrivertrust.org.uk/enjoy-the-waterways/safety-on-our-waterways/coronavirus which will hopefully make it clearer what will be open and what closed. I'm seeing rumours on facebook that CRT on-the-ground staff are being told not to turn up for work with immediate effect.

Thanks, you are right . Will wait and see but its a long way to walk to empty the khazi

Living in a block like that was almost certainly a much higher risk than someone living in a 3 bed semi in suburbia.

I could suggest that, given the normal multiple comings and goings in a block of flats, and the fact that, if the rules are followed, these comings and goings will be reduced significantly, they will almost certainly be at less risk after tonight, than before.

If you are so sure that they are all going to get it after lockdown, and due to lockdown, perhaps they were all going to get it anyway?

How far would you have to reverse to the winding hole you passed on the way?

If I remember rightly its by the Waterside Inn ( ex Royal Oak) about 500 metres from the top lock.

  18. Anybody know if the Hillmorton locks are closed? If I was to go there from the south to get to the services then fine, but trouble is that if the flight is locked then its impossible to turn around at the top cos the winding is at the bottom of the flight. Any help please. Ta

It's starting to get serious across the pond, hence the following from another forum I follow:

"Wow, just came out of Walmart and have never seen anything like this. There was NO toilet paper and I walked back up front to the service desk and asked if they had anymore anywhere else. The girl gave me a very rude 'NO' with a such a look of disgust that I would even ask. That was the longest walk back to the bathroom with my pants around my ankles .."

Back to the old days then, using copies of the paper instead..plenty in the recycling bins. personally I think a broadsheet goes further than a copy of the Scum, Smaill, Sexpress or StarK. Broadsheets actually have a semblance of news too which helps..the others rely on you to take viagra.

There again if you want a pair of tits stuck in yer crack then page 3 of the Scum would do nicely

I answered mine last week but broke my own rules which is never to respond to surveys as no one takes any notice.

Everytime I've stayed at Premier Inn (Southampton, West Quay)in recent times I've filled in the survey to the effect of how poor the stay was but never had a response

You are right. It seems that customer service is not taken very seriously nowadays. I wrote to Clinton Cards to ask why they still sell single use helium balloons that end up in waterways, fields and the sea and kill wildlife but they havent bothered to reply. So, they go on my 'boycott for life' list as do Best (sic) Western Hotels who did not reply to a complaint.  One would have thought that every customer was important but I must be naive with the attitude so many businesses take. I shall laugh when they go bust even though I feel sorry for those at the bottom who lose their jobs because of incompetent management at the top.

Access to most waterways for British Canoe Union members is covered by a national agreement (not free, the BCU pays).

The Cam Conservators, controllers of the Cam from Bottisham Lock upstream to past Cambridge city centre, have now reneged on this agreement.

From March, they are going to charge all private canoes and kayaks for access to their waters.

    £56 for canoes/kayaks under 5m.

    £102 for canoes/kayaks over 5m.

Rowing 8 will be charged £76 (18m long).

All craft to display a number, people without a number will be prosecuted.

Disgraceful...welcome to rip-off Britain. Is nothing sacred from rampant profiteering in this country?

  22. Marlec have  a regulator for up to 200W solar and it has an entry for its wind turbine too on the same regulator. Their technology has improved loads now but with the old 910 model of wind genny (or most gennys) as another poster has said unless it is high up you may not pain much power. Gusts are no good ...you need a constant flow of wind to produce energy. For my money, solar is much better

Yup they are going to ban them and make life ever more difficult for them

They are only going to ban the sale of new vehicles by 2023 (maybe but lets see what the fossil fuel lobbyists mange to pull off) but what about the 28 million cars which are currently driving around and could be around for years to come. This new proposal is window dressing to the extreme ..but I didnt (and would never) vote for the Tories...or the other main parties for that matter.
