Starting to plan our new (to us) boat. A 36ft Springer that needs a new interior.  I’ll

also replace all the electrics while it’s stripped.

‘ALL’ the electrics won’t be much.  I figure that I’m starting from the following assumptions which might all be wrong.

    All lighting on 12v

    Water pump for bilge

water pump for sink and shower

Radio. 12v or maybe just a rechargeable.

TV. Probably won’t bother but 12v if we do.

240v sockets.  Daft not to have a couple so let’s say two doubles.  Rarely anything plugged in. Tool chargers maybe, phones, iPad.

    Fridge on 12v presumably. B

    Navigation lights.

Couple of 12v and USB sockets maybe.

    Solar.

So…. Where do I start. Out of interest while browsing Bimble I saw this.

    https://www.bimblesolar.com/offgrid/complete-packages/250-500w-kits/300W-complete

Would be good to know why this is / isn’t suitable for my needs as it’s seems very well priced for what looks like a fairly complete kit of parts.

Any advice or guide welcome.  See loads on YouTube but they seem a bit light on the detail I need.

And where’s a good site for electrical equipment.  Car hobbies I’ve always used Vehicle Wiring Products  or TLC Direct for home but I’d imagine much of that is inappropriate for boat use.

Have a look and have a read of Tony’s electrical course……..

    it’s all there , that’s how I did mine

  2. Hi Alan, Mrs Alakefic here.   No not only the K&A but for various reasons, we’d like to do that one in the early stage of our new venture. Understand it’s busy but as I say, we’ve got time on our side, so wondered if anyone had any input on potential problems. Cheers

  3. Hi all

     could do with any advice.

not new to boating but new to the idea of Liveaboard

we are considering buying a 70’ wide beam and have all the time in the world to cruise her.  We would like to navigate the Kennet and Avon and, on paper, all looks good with the lock sizes etc but do any of you good folk see things differently?

In general I'd agree with what others have said, if the amount of ballast removed is approximately equal to the amount of steel overplating added and the overplating was uniform on both sides. However, it would be very easy to remove too much ballast without realising and make the boat too tender & unstable and a visual check alone will be very unreliable, so you should do a calculation too.

On most canals you shouldn't have to worry too much, but the situation could change if the boat is ever taken onto rivers with a decent current, small waves or the wash from other boats. Even high winds might make it unstable if you've removed too much ballast.

With all the ballast removed , the bow is still higher that the stern, but i being a shallow v hull it has increased the wobble....😂

  5. Hi Guys

I have a P2r gearbox that requires overhauling and bearing replacement, im having  difficulty in finding the split sleeve astern clutch bush, there are no dimensions of this in the parts manual but have measured myself as follows: ID 1. 5/16  OD1. 7/16 Length 2. 3/16

Any ideas  where I can get one or possibly manufactured would be appreciated.

    cheers

    Nigel
