  1. Just to add to the above, the locks will be open later in the day between 12.30 and 1.30 for exit. This gives a maximum time of five hours to complete the flight which can be a bit tight depending on conditions. I'm going down on Tuesday morning with another boat so fingers crossed!

    To add

The datum at Baits Bite  is 3.6mAOD. the chart therefore indicates water level above 3.6mAOD. The river bed level is not shown on the EA website as it no doubt varies

    https://flood-warning-information.service.gov.uk/station/6193?direction=u

I must be stupid too as I always thought that the river levels shown on the EA website were the same as the depth. If it's not, how can you find out the depth of a river?

I'm sure you do need a handspike to get to Cooper Bridge though I can't remember how many locks require it.

Travelling east to west on the C&H, the first lock needing a hanspike is Thornes Lock just outside Wakefield.  We bought a hardwood pick axe handle from a hardware shop for £6.50 which worked perfectly as a handspike.

  5. I'm thinking of getting a portable radio before our next trip away and was thinking of getting a battery/re-chargeable version but was wondering whether it's best to get one with FM or DAB. Never having used either on the cut I would be grateful for any thoughts. If you have suggestions for make/model that work well that would also be appreciated. Thanks

Not sure - the lock cottage was rented out to a definite non canal type a year or so ago.  I know because I had to knock on his door to get him to move his car to out of the way of the balence  beam !

CRT do have a little base at one end of the building and the little ice cream  shop closed 7 or 8 years ago.

Yes, the house was bought by a couple of architects last year apparently. No link to the canal. The lockies have access to a small building adjoining the house.

    Thanks again for the comments.

Re Reedley Marina it quotes £20 night on website for widebeams (we are 9 ' 6") but have quoted me £30 a night ?

    So .... no thanks.

We have decided on foulridge moorings just before the tunnel but does anyone know how long you can stay there??

    Cheers

We have found it very shallow on the Foulridge side of the tunnel, even on the official pontoons/moorings. If it were me I would go through the tunnel and then on another 10 minutes to the moorings above the Barrowford top lock where there was plenty of room when we came through a couple of weeks ago.

  8. As far as I know, none of us saw the job description or person spec for this role and apart from a short précis of their background, we do not have all the information on the candidates that was availiable to the recruiting panel.  Under the circumstances, I don't think we are qualified to comment on the suitability of any of the successful candidates.

  9. We have moored near Reedly Marina on a couple of occasions recently with no problem.  The best place is towpath side just before the canal footbridge on the Leeds side of the marina entrance.  As an alternative, I was recently at the Rosegrove services for some volocky training and these are fine too. The view is not brilliant but the moorings are safe as the compound is locked at night. There are showers etc and take away/convenience stores within easy reach.

  10. To try and get this back on track, I would say to the OP that we retired early last year (mid 50s) and bought our first boat having been hirers on and off for many years.  Our intention is to use the boat roughly for a month on and then off in the season going home in between and occasional weeks in the winter season.  So far (since last July) this is what we have done and it works fine though I'd be happier to spend more time on board or for longer periods, but this way it does allow us to enjoy other home based hobbies and interests as well.  I'd agree about the finance comments.  We bought a one year old boat thinking that costs would be less but we have had our share of financial surprises.  On the other side, we have found that when we are cruising we spend far less then when we are home and also noticed that our utility bills are also lower.  Hope this helps and if you have any other questions, post on here or ask direct.

  11. All I remember is the that the first time I approached the junction from Leeds I didn't think it was that clear, maybe it came upon me quicker than I expected and the turn up the Calder seemed tucked away. Maybe I was just scared of going across the weir.

  12. The water dripping in is not deep enough for the bilge pump to cut in. I removed about 2 litres of water earlier after about three hours cruising and it doesn't leak when the gear is not engaged so I hope that it will get me home.  It's never been a problem until the last few days which is why I am concerned now.  I will try the hose thing tomorrow thanks.

  13. Thanks all for the comments so far.  I will check alignment as far as possible by sight, the hoses to and from the unit look fine and the shaft turns fairly easily by hand (should it?). I didn't realise there was more than one type of silicone grease. This is what I have been using which looks similar to the one suggested by Cuthound.
