  1. I had a similar finding on my first boat, a few years ago now, and if my memory serves me right a simple loop of hose pipe above the intake fixed it. Perhaps worth investigating? I’m not an expert but I think it may fail the BSS without it.

  2. Dear all,

‘’I hope that you can help me with some suggestions. My bilge pump (narrowboat) has packed up, the auto feature isn’t working and thinks that it is always under water.

The same one at Midland Chandlers is £65. As this is the second one to fail I was wondering what bilge pump people would recommend?

    many thanks

    Paul

  3. Thanks to everyone. I will look into Captain Tolley’s crack (so to speak) it looks pretty good stuff. I will also ask at the local boatyard.

I used closed cell adhesive foam tape on my windows. My frames were screwed in and I had to reseal two windows. They weren't leaking when I got rid of that boat 5 yrears later.

Did you find that the screws came out ok?  Worried that they will shear …

I think you've been very lucky. Most experienced boaters wouldn't do it. It's simple to take the rope off the stud and coil it away out of the way to avoid any issues.

Five and a half years of good luck for me then!

  5. I have one (They are called Autoterm now) and it has worked well. I have had one issue but that was resolved with a free replacement. They have a 3 year guarantee. There is excellent support and advice from their Facebook group page. They only need to be run once a month for 30 minutes when not in use. The Comfort controller (human interface device) is excellent, runs up to 3 programs a day and can run in thermostat mode, will remind you when you need to run it.
highly recommended. Much, much quieter than the Alde heater that it replaced

  6. I’m sure this has been covered elsewhere, but this is what I have found out.

Politicians keep saying that everyone will get this payment (£400) since April and again in July and accepted that the 1% who ‘live in a park home, houseboat or off the grid’ will get it, but have so far failed to announce how, except to say that it will be announced ‘this autumn’

We are, of course, being conveniently forgotten, but I would like to start pushing for this to happen soon. I am not a great ‘Twitter’ er, but have tried to ask some questions on there and wondered if those of you who knew more about it would like to push that. Link here

You could also write to your MP (though you will have to be resident in their constituency). I have contacted mine twice and have had bullshit answers both times, but will try again.

I have also contacted CAB and hey will update me if they get anything more

    regards

  7. I have an Autoterm heater fitted:

    https://www.autoterm.com

mine is a wet (radiator) system, but I believe that their new air systems could suit boats.

they also have a remote control (via app and dongle) option for when you are away and a very good comfort controller. Their Facebook page is excellent for getting answers to questions.

mine has been reliable and it is cheaper than other similar options.

  8. I think that we have to be careful about how we define ‘literacy’. Using today’s definition isn’t helpful and we can be too judgemental about those who lived many generations ago. People were mostly educated to the standard that their job required. As ‘literacy’ increased through greater educational attendance it is perhaps easy to see why many people working on Narrowboat’s we’re left behind. That is assuming that their children spent all of their time on the boats none living with others on the bank. Anyway, everyone before the 1950s was illiterate in a sense - none of them were ‘computer literate’.

If the supermarkets deliver more goods in vans (especially from centralised depots like the automated one Ocado use) they sell less in stores, so need less space and fewer shelf-stackers and cashiers and tills and deliveries *to* the supermarkets...

Most stores deliver goods picked from the shelves, these still need to be stacked, so the shelf space argument doesn’t apply (to most)

  10. I have an Autoterm (Planar) Diesel heater running rads and hot water. It has worked perfectly for two years now, and there is an option of  controlling it via your phone when you are away. There is a blown hot air option (for smaller boats)

They have an excellent FB help page to assist you with any problems, and are somewhat cheaper. Worth considering.

But I also have a coal stove.

That's good to hear, I'm a natural worry-er so I have to be careful figuring out whether something is a genuine concern or if my heads just messing with me.

Surely you worry about where you live at the moment? Us natural worriers can find anything to worry about - is it just different things that you hadn’t got used to worrying about?

In my dreams sometimes watch the boat the boat sinking, but it’s always in random ways that will never happen!

    good luck

I use a Huawei B535 router with a Poynting 4g xpol001 external antenna and a sim from Smarty, its about as good as you will get without spending huge money.

Works much better than using a mobile phone as a hotspot, here in the marina there is no signal on our mobiles inside the boat  but the 535 works fine and we call over wifi.

I agree, best signal I have ever had.
