The Week/MoneyWeek can be interesting but you have to tip toe through a fair whack of waffle sometimes, never thought I'd see a narrowboat in their investment section though. Ms Merida's other by line for today is about a Sunseeker Hawk 38 so she's going for a very boaty valentines.

Zips on cratch covers, pram hoods and such like seem to be the feature that fails first as the cover ages. Has anyone tried Dutch lacing as an alternative to zips? The way of doing up doors on old fashioned canvas tents. It seems to me that this would be a more robust way of fastening than a zip, at the expense of a bit more time in doing up. Egress in an emergency would be fast as you'd just need to undo the bottom, then pull on the canvas and it all undoes. I almost said unzips, but that is the wrong word!

Vaguely contemplating a cratch cover for the boat at some time and this idea appeals. What have I not thought of?

Blimey, there's a blast from the past. Being an outdoorsy gurl both by leisure and profession I used to see (and use) these quite a lot, thankfully you hardly see them any more, they were such a footer, and have probbly gone the way of the lorrymans wrench (or hitch depending what part of the country you hail from).

They may be a footer but they are easy to do to the point where you can do them by feel so as easy to tie in the dark as in the day, and you're right they can be done from both sides, and if you can get the tension right can be undone quickly by running your hand up between the two sheets. You used to get them on covers for lorries and trailers where the loops were slightly elasticated and secured at the bottom by hooking the bottom lace/loop over an anchor point of some sort, the elastic allowed you to pull the whole thing tighter making it less prone to trouble from the wind; but of course the elastic didn't last for ever.

If I was fitting one I wouldn't be using a knot at the bottom, I would have the last lace elastic so I could easily pull it over on and off a hook but my experience is that the wind will always find a way to get in about this kind of tie method so it needs to be really well made with a good over flap, the correct length laces, and the last lace really tightly secured or you just give the wind something to play with which will eventually cause damage. I wouldn't say this method is any more robust than a really good zip but possibly for different reasons; I'm not trying to sound like a rain cloud but unlike with a zip every one of those laces has the potential to provide the wind with a little pocket to get in and buffet around, so can work well if made well but can can also get trashed pretty quickly in bad weather if not.

I think they look really nice cos I like things like that but on a more practical note the rope laces may have the potential to out live a zip but the stitching of the seams would need to be extra secure, a sturdy over flap thingy (I'm not sure what you actually call them) that maybe also had heavy duty snap fasteners or velcro and either a good anchor point for the bottom lace/loop or don't make it a loop so that you can tie it in a better more secure way, would be my suggestions.

Sorry that's a bit rambly

I'm looking into getting a wind turbine. I already have solar which has been brilliant but I'm thinking every little helps. I also think we're get a lot more high winds and storms in the coming years and why not get something good from it? I've just read quite a good article online about it but they don't mention specific makes or models.

I've noticed that they vary hugely in price from just a couple of hundred to well over a £1000.

    Any advice/experience much appreciated.

When you're thinking about the domestic / marine wind generator then it's not so must high winds or winds speed that you need to take into consideration it's the quality of wind you might get at your mooring. Wind turbines and generator only work at their optimum efficiency when they are powered by smooth air flow, which is why the big wind farm are up the side of hills, out at sea or wide open spaces, rather than urban or wooded areas. They type of wind generator that you would be considering are the type that work well on yachts because they are mounted up a mast and the air flow is undisturbed, this unfortunately is less likely to happen on a canal; that's not to say that it can't happen but it is definitely something you have to take into account.

The marine generators that you can get these days are very much quieter that they used to be and can be quite handy if you can get them set up in the environment that they like best. I strongly recommend that if you want to research these little beasties that you look to yachting videos on YouTube but that you also look into how quality of wind flow will effect whether or not a wind generator will work for you in the places that you tend to moor.

Rutland and Silentwind are two that I know of but there are defiantly more available.

  4. Actually I'm too tired to try and find the stuff I need to find to be able to work out what it is I need to do to make it legible.

I can't help thinking it would have been easier to just get rid of the politics section rather than go through all this hoohah. It's not like we need it any more anyway.

There has been a ‘site improvement’ tonight. Do you like it??

I seem to have the whole of this thread but all jumbled up on the VNC - which now seems to not be the VNC anymore. Funny stuff software, innit. But I can see that people have posted screen shots, so I guess that the answers to how you fix it, but I can't make them make much sense just now.

I noticed that, so far I'm good with David bowie and the Dubliners, but I haven't got to the end so I may recognise some more yet. :D

Go to any of of hundreds of music pubs on a weekend and see endless pub rock bands of all ages doing Allright Now and Freebird etc etc.  OK you might also get an Elvis or two but he's a minority interest.

I'm not saying that 70s stuff doesn't get played or covered or that some of it's not good, but I think you and I are going to different music clubs/pubs and definitely on different nights cos I had to go look up what freebird was and can say that I don't ever remember that being played in a pub; as for elvis impersonations they're just a little too cringy for me.

I have pondered this, but there are just so many young bands who play the music of the 70's, or music very much derived from it, so its not going to die out just because its original generation does.

    ...........Dave

I think that could be said of every decade, it's just that you notice the 70s cos that was 'your' decade. Has there ever been a decade where someone didn't release a cover of the 50s hit I Put A Spell On You.

Are Harvey and Jane still forum members? .

A quick search for "Harvey" and "hosanna" didn't bring up anything to suggest they were ever members but of course they may have been posting under a different name. The thing that Galilee posted is from wilton marina's Instagram so you might be able to post a reply to them on there, if not to them personally then perhaps in reply to that post.

    That's a fine brew

One of my favourites. Or it was but I don't drink now, I find it bothers and aggravates some of my other health grumbles.

I think this might come down to some people misunderestimating the importance some other people attach to the ability to freely use a social media platform..

Ok yes it is just a forum. But is it? Maybe it's more than that.

I would like to think that one day in the not too distant future that would be less of an issue. But I strongly believe that will only come about when people from both forums stop goading each other, cos lets face it the goading isn't about what happened, it's about the people who just like to goad.
