  1. I didnt and I did. Maybe I should have asked 5 times. .......tbh although I am also an Engineer and do take an interest in how things work. As previously pointed out I have no wish to become an expert on all things boating or spend my weekends with my head under the bonnet. I bought a boat to spend my weekends cruising the rivers and canals. I have almost sickened myself during my first year of boating because I have spent far too much time with my head in the Haynes book of boating and scouring the internet for information. I was pleased to find this forum, only recently, so I can stop wasting my time and just rely on you guys who are more interested in tinkering, while I'm out there cruising or in the pub! Thanks for the advise but honestly I have no wish to go flying anywhere. I get into enough trouble on the roads. The river is my release and I am more than happy ambling along. I just felt I was lacking some power on the tidal river on occasions so am looking for that little extra just to keep me out of trouble.
  2. lol! no need to apologise. I didnt take offence honestly! ........ I enjoyed your explanation on taking advantage of said 'prop walk' and it made me chuckle reminding me of an occasion this summer when I was cruising up to Ripon on the river Ouse. I thought I had got the hang of mooring and even surprised myself getting into some tight spots in York but on this occasion at a lock I could not get my stern into the bank for love nor money. Even the gongoozlers were getting embarrassed and walking away. The next lock mooring was on the opposite bank so I expected it to be a breeze but still could not get my stern into the bank!
  3. No, I wasnt. The main reason was to get more thrust for the tidal rivers. Any reduction in prop walk would just be a bonus.
  4. oh I know you do! ;D .......... it certainly seems to be the case ........ its only a pity the prop experts didnt know ....... I will be happy to share. I am expecting still a little under propped but the best it will have been. fingers crossed.
  5. I didnt know about that but I know it was a b***er to moor! It was impossible to drift into a mooring. As soon as you hit reverse the back end ........ sorry, stern, tramped back out. ps. just to clarify the 20 x 23 was my original prop already on the boat when I bought it.
  6. I couldnt have done it without you Dalslandia! ;D ......... my 160amp alternator should keep my engine working even if the prop doesnt! ......... Im looking forward to getting this 2:1 box fitted this weekend. It has always bugged me since realizing. Having spent a small fortune on sound proofing only to have to run my engine faster because of the 3:1 box. I'm hoping its going to be a win win!
  7. That is the exact same logic I was sold on but it certainly hasnt worked for me....... Being a very simple person I like to keep things simple ........ otherwise my head starts to hurt. I have now come up with my own theory. After all we are talking about floating skips! So I guess we can dispense with any rule book and theories on hydrodynamics - nice word - I just learnt it recently. I need to be spinning a propellor the size of a dustbin lid. If I cant I need to spin the next largest possible with a huge pitch but not exceeding a ratio of 1:1 otherwise it will handle like a pig (derived from my experience with my 20 x 23), as fast as I can! ta daaaaa!! Anybody else want a prop designing?! What, the one that sounds like a washing powder?
  8. Cant imaging it fairing too well in this! woops! of course ........ sorry its still early! Yes, made it easy to get the prop puller on........ only pity it wouldnt come off! ....... is that bad? and more clearance to skeg.
  9. They did not imply anything! ....... those are my words which I have heard many times from plastic boaters ........ no harm in a little ribbing between the different camps! ....... see what I did there?! ;D lol
  10. Unfortunately not. Although the the distance from the centre of the shaft to the Uxster plate must be circa 20 inches as the only clearance when the 20 inch prop was fitted was the step, the thickness of the bottom of the boat to the anti cavitation plate. I did take a photo though just to give some idea.
  11. I think you will find that is more for ......... how some might describe ........... proper boats! eh herm!! ......... When I spoke to them they said it didnt matter for my application because the prop is not rotating so fast.
  12. Thank you! ........ although I was looking forward to cruising and not spending every weekend with my head under the bonnet!
  13. We get some serious twigs coming up the Ouse on a spring tide so that doesnt leave me much scope! I see its going to be yet another compromise! ........ I'm learning boating seems to be one big compromise! lol
  14. I am getting conflicting information on this prop design. Some are saying that the clearance between the tip of the prop and the uxter plate is very important and should be between 1.5 to 2 inches whereas others are saying spin as large a prop as you can and dont worry about minimal clearances. What is your opinion on this? Thanks
  15. Thanks for the confirmation all. Its not a big issue I was just curious. I'm running Chrome.
  16. Am I the only one who has to close my browser, reopen it, enter canalworld.net and log out without doing anything else. eg. scroll, topic select etc in order to logout successfully? If I try logging out after scrolling/ selecting it will not.
  17. Agreed! I also found out the hard way. The previous owner obviously tried that and Ive been left with the worst of both worlds! 20 x 23 prop on but still not enough get up and go, at least on tidal rivers, and slow speed maneuvering is poor. As soon as you go into reverse the boat just arcs backwards on the same path you came in on! makes it a b*****r to moor. I've now got the price down from £924 to £400 to modify mine or £500 for a recon exchange. I'd like to go with modifying mine not only due to cost but cant think mine hasn't done much work but concerned when they split it open I might get a call saying this that and the other needs doing. Decisions, decisions??
  18. Any ideas if I would get more than £600 for a second hand PRM Newage PRM260D3 gearbox 3:1 ratio, 9 years old but only 440 hours? I only ask because that is what I have been offered for it as an exchange for a PRM260D2. Thanks, I'll give them a try!
  19. Dont forget my 10% commission for hijacking my thread!
  20. nice! so how much fuel you burning at that speed? ......... id need a shuttle rocket on mine to get up to that speed!
  21. Thanks I'l give them a try. Although I'l have to use the missus' account as I came off ebay some years ago.
  22. Yes, it was PRM who gave me the contact details of Mark at Lancing who was very helpful and confirmed it was the right way to go but as I say it seems a little steep to replace an output wheel and two pinions! Besides they near Brighton. North Yorkshire would be more suited but for the right price I'll travel anywhere in GB. I saw that but must admit didnt consider asking about a deal.
  23. Hi, does anybody know where I could get a PRM Newage PRM260D3 gearbox 3:1 ratio changed to 2:1 or exchanged for a reasonable price? The gearbox has only done 440 hours but the 3:1 ratio appears to be incorrect for the maximum prop I can throw. I appreciated folk need to put food on the table but I have been quoted £924 which seems a little steep.
  24. Axiom. I had an assurance that they would change it if it wasnt satisfactory but after further research I fear they are not going to be able to improve the performance further without changing the gearbox ratio from 3:1 to 2:1.
