it might be best if i put this on hold until she's next out the water then i can be sure of what she's got and see if a bigger prop might be viable.... what gaps are needed between the prop and sceg/weedhatch to be safe?
-
Thanks all.... its not dangerous, just annoying, but liveable with..... i will do as suggested and look at vicprop though! thanks!

mmmm this could be a domino effect....... reluctant to go forward on this unless i know the problem for sure and the solution but it all seems a bit of a dark art....... excessive ponderings.....

Keep thinking about this....... are there any advantages to keeping to 3:1? i know the charging circuit will be happier but any other things to consider?

Hope its not like councils who made getting rid of household waste so difficult it increased fly tipping... i'd hate to see bin bags chucked in the hedges etc.....

There are so many variables about the reasons that a boat surges forwards when ascending some locks.
The length and draught of the hull, the position of the inlet culverts and the rate of filling and the precise position of the boat in the lock to name a few.
As to reversing, the shape of the rear swims is a factor.
Which is why some are different from the herd.
Also the steerer is a major factor and what a boat is expected to do in his/her experience.
Never a truer word said.... As well as the issues im thinking this must be at least partly me - i know how she handles so need to act accordingly... it would be nice to see if it can be improved but its such minefield and things might not change much for lots of expense....

IWell you could get someone to swap out the gearboxes, it's not a big job. Or even do it yourself if you have spanners!
is it an unbolt/bolt on change? i'm fairly handy but need to know my limitations!

Is she an ex hire boat ?
Our Reeves boat had a 3:1 gearbox and on asking why, apparantly they fitted them to all their hire boats as it meant the engines ran at higher revs, made more noise, so the hirers were less inclined to 'speed' as it would deafen them.
I have an 'unused since a full refurbish' PRM 150 2:1 gear box (that was part of my spares kit - along with an LPWS4 engine)
Its just sat in my shed so could be available if you wanted one.
Thats so kind of you Alan, she was a ex shareboat so probably same?
I'd not know what to do with the gearbox but thanks for the offer....

No, but quite expensive to buy a new gearbox, looks like around £1600. It might be possible to open up the gearbox and change the reduction ratio as a cheaper option, but that is beyond my pay grade! Maybe the manufacturer could advise.
(edit, when I said "gearbox change to 2:1" above, I meant removing the current gearbox and installing a new one with 2:1 ratio)
Suddenly i have an overwhelming urge to put up with this!

I think a gearbox change to 2:1 would be advisable.
is that a big job?

That is why you rev more, generally with a Beta 43 you would have a 2:1 ratio into something like an 18" X 12" prop or bigger but your swim height is not so great.
By generator do you mean a Travelpower?
yes i believe it was a travelpower - removed before we got the boat but there is evidence it was there...

It sounds more like under-propping to me.
To the OP, unfortunately your table does not show the gearbox reduction ratio so we can't see what a prop calc app suggests, but higher than others revs for a given speed suggest under propping.
Hi Tony, just found that its 3:1

Some boats are deliberately underpropped to get more charging from the alternator and discourage excessive speeding.
it used to have a generator on it i think so maybe thats why?

Thanks all. It all engages fine and i see the wash up the side etc... its definately 'different' to our other shareboat in how responsive stop/reverse is.
as an aside when generally cruising i seem to need more revs than others i see - seems to be around 1700rpm for slow walking pace... could this be related?

reassuring thanks guys!

Hi All
Since getting Lily in 2019 she's been a fab boat, but I noticed that when moving forward and wish to stop/go into reverse she's not keen! When we have the dance at bridges when someone else is coming through I can sit there in reverse for a fair while before she will actually go backwards and i jus have to smile nicely while people wonder if im going to do anything!.... I'm sure I've not noticed this on other boats i've been on. Always thought its just one of those things, but thought i'd ask the question at least. I dont have much info other than the prop is 18" - some rubbishy pics below....
This is especially bad in locks where i can have her in full reverse but still she moves forward - i know this occurs in the 'rush', but just checking if i can improve it?

Ours has about 2000 on the fitted dial, god knows how much from the main panel before it 'went dark'..... still purrs and keeps its oil... its an ex shareboat so no doubt it will have done many hours, but always looked after..

We have a poynting aerial with a DrayTek Vigor2620Ln router. We have a Vodafone unlimited 4G sim and have been able to stream wherever we are without any issues... gives good internet.

Instead of paying lots for a fuel polish, you can make the bits needed yourself, or there is the low, low budget way:

I've never had to have a helmsman course to get our narrowboat insurance.... maybe shop around? not saying they are not a good idea, just never seen it as a condition before..

We seem to have completely missed it here in Norfolk... just a bit rainy...

Im off to see the Northern Lights tommorow.
Could be a wet journey, but nothing better than Blackpool illuminations in the rain.
Keep away from all the orange ladies...... never seen so many than in blackpool... they will probably look a bit streaky in the rain.
