  1. Wonderful. And in the end I have chosen someone else to do my roof who will be using more 'conventional' paints, Any recommdations for a steel roofed NB? No top box and not used as storage space. Will have 2x semi-flexible solars stuck to the surface (hence wanting to ensure the roof is in tip top condition before hand).
  2. Ok - thanks very much. I have no idea if I have a VSR. How would I know? Is this something I can find? Again, many thanks.
  3. I've inherited a Sterling Pro Combi Quasi Sine Wave inverter. https://sterling-power.com/products/pro-combi-q-quasi-sine-wave I've been on shoreline for the past few days and was intrigued that although my leisures are running at around 13, my starter is at 12. I've been advised that this is because the inverter isn't charging my starter battery - that'll only be done via the alternator when I run the engine. Does this mean that even on shoreline and in a marina, one has to run one's engine to maintain the health of the starter battery? And should I be concerned that my starter battery has been on 12V the past 3 days?....
  4. Hi rusty - thanks for posting. If my starter is at 12V and hasn't moved I think that means it's probably not charging it?
  5. Thought I'd post here as I have a related'ish question. 6. Really, really interesting. I actually quoted some of your post back to my first contact with the chap who is importing/using the paint. Be curious to hear what he says about your concerns re. application etc. And not a ramble at all - really appreciative of you taking your time to post so comprehensively.
  7. And there's me thinking my topic was boring. Love to hear people's experience, thoughts, insights on using a commercial sector marine treatment on a 'non-commercial' vessel.
  8. Surprised no-one else is interested in the thread. i always thought primers and paint were the makings of good boat chitchat ☹️
  9. I am very interested and I think I'm going to go for it. Will report back!
  10. Hi. I need my roof treating. It has some rust areas - not too much but I'm about to place some semi-flexible solars and so need the roof A1 before fixing. I've been offered a quote using paints supplied by Chemco International. In particular, these: http://marine.chemcoint.com/products/applications/topsides-and-boottop.html I'm wondering if folks here have any thoughts on these paints. Many thanks.
  11. Mike is now booked! Thanks everyone! Any recommendations re. fitting the solar panels and the iron bar?
  12. Hi. I'm buying a boat (survey dependent) in Chester - currently moored near Tattenhall Marina. I'm based in the south and don't have contacts in the area. If there are some names you're happy to recommend, I'd be grateful. I'm also looking to have some solar panels fitted (with controller) and a security bar fixed across a bow door (steel doors, wood lined in inside and painted on outside). Again very grateful for any recomendations. Thanks all!
  13. Very many thanks for all the thoughtful words. I'll go to see the boat tomorrow and it's going to be extremely useful to be able to talk through these posts with the owner - see what she says and how I feel about everything. ....and if I don't ever show up on here again, you'll know that something extremely dodgy went down!
  14. No home mooring and defo not a hire company. It seems as though I'll be doing something that is 'under the radar' - a little like an 'under the radar' sublet of a room in a shared house. On the other hand it seems as though the risks are pretty equal on both sides of the fence - if I'm an irresponsible tenant and wreck the boat and don't comply by the cc'ing rules then the owner is as much at risk as I might be if they were renting a substandard boat to me. Having read around on other forums it does seem as though people are doing this and taking the risks - how else does one gain any experience of a cc'ing lifestyle otherwise?
  15. As far as I understand it, if one is to rent a boat, one needs to do so with a residential mooring as part of the contract? Now, I'm not wanting to ask fro advice on anything illegal but again, AFAIK, there are numerous folks renting boats on a CC basis. Is this a totally sketchy thing to do? Are these folks ducking and diving?
  16. Hey MissMax. Thanks for the post! Actually, it's a NB to rent in London - a live aboard. The owner sounds great and super supportive - offering on hand help and guidance and a lot of reassurance that the community is very supportive in London (despite the influx of people like me who are putting an increasing strain on resources). I'm pretty practical - years of bike touring/solo traveling etc. - so I'm sure I'll work things out and be able to reach out and ask for help. The idea of renting is reassuring. There's a safety net in the owner.
  17. Hi All. Total newbie here....although I've been walking canal tow paths throughout the UK, France and North America for years....a wishing and a dreaming. About to now take the plunge by renting a 61ft NB as a continuous cruiser. Very nervous, tbh. I'll be on my own and don't drive a car - zero experience reverse parking! Everyone (who has never lived aboard but has been on boating holidays) has suggested I'll find everything hard, notably moving the boat every 2 weeks, keeping warm going into the winter, finding wood/coal etc. Reaching out for some reassurance and cheery words before I make a decision this weekend.
