  1. Are you typing with a courgette?

I have fat fingers, is that relevant.

I type also on a dodgy tablet, does that make it illegible?

Or are you, as I suspect, trying to pull the "cleverer" card?

OK first off no degree required, I don't have one and I don't care whether you do or not and I'm not sure we're talking about moral issues.

Breed? When was the last time you congratulated a friend/family member on successful breeding? We talk about breeding in animals, for people we talk about fertility rate. What you've done there is set up the "other". They're not like us, they breed. This immediately makes me think badly of you but leaving that aside and believe your explanation that it was all innocent blah blah and let's examine the premise. The only study we have (as opposed to made up / read in a UKIP leaflet / on Breitbart) is from 2007 looking at fertility rates among immigrants from Pakistan and Bangladesh. What it tells us is that initially fertility rates are higher, in line with the fertility rates in Pakistan and Bangladesh but over time the rates fall. That is to say the evidence points to the fertility rate of a population being linked to the material conditions in which they exist - see fertility rates historically in the UK for an idea of that. Take a population from one set of material conditions, place them in another and their behaviour over time changes.

Nigel's hypothetical isn't looking any close so far.

You for one don't see it based on nothing at all it seems other than some regurgitated ideas about birth rates.

By remain European do you mean you hope we don't get moved from off the coast of Europe to say the US Pacific or do you mean white?

It's late, I will reply In the morning..... I think it requires more than a quick response....

  2.

I'll play. No. I wouldn't be happy with that, any more than I'm happy that the house of lords currently has bishops sitting in it.

The issue is though not the hypothetical question, it's where that question comes from, where the belief in some quarters come from that Sharia law in the UK is a possibility at all. The answer is that it's a manufactured threat, partly by government and media - there is always an enemy and always will be - and partly the mainstream media depiction is exaggerated by those that wish to build a power base predicated on protecting us where the government has failed.

    OK, I'm in.....

I will admit, I don't have a post graduate degree, therefore I'm opening myself to derision. :-/

I accept, you "cleverer" members have the perceived moral high ground......

Nonetheless, I feel I have as much say as anybody else,

Instead of fast forwarding 20 years, let's fast forward 150 years (hypothetically).........

Is it uneasonable to think that, considering the situation in Europe currently, and also the rate in which our new "refugee/immigrant European" compatriots" " appear to breed at a considerably greater rate than we brits appear to do, that night carton's (hypothetical) scenario is so far off?

I for one, don't think that it is so unlikely that there are indeed majority "islamic" leaning politicians in enough constituencies to hold the balance of power.

Sharia law, is probably less likely.......

however, I'd like to hear from, particularly the left leaning members on this forum, where you lie on this, and if dismissed, do you ever consider that this scenario is likely or a possibility in the future.... ?

I sincerely hope that the UK can remain, at least European for many years to come ......

  3. Isn't it a pity that God invented oil?

Otherwise, the deserts of the middle east would only be home to scattered tribes each scratching an existence out of the sand, waiting for swarms of locusts, signaling an occasional feast.

The world would be a much safer place if God had been a bit more wise.

    Slightly off topic, sorry.........

Hopefully in a few years, oil may not be such a valued commodity.

A project that has held my interest for a couple of years, might just break through into mainstream science this year.

  4. I'm a chippie, and we have started to use "fixall" for many applications at work, not the cheapest(about £5-00+ a tube) but seems to be upto the job in all situations that we've tried it on. I don't recall a time it has failed to date.

That said, I also rate sika products highly too, and I've seen polyethylene glue fail at times.......but not often

  5. I would put off new batteries until I was ready to cruise. If you dont have shore supply a solar panel is a great help. I use a couple when the boat is left but remove them before I go cruising, there is not enough power in mine to recharge the batteries but it maintains them well.

I'm hoping the leisure batteries can wait until spring, or at least until I know all is OK with the charging system, as suggested.... If I can, with all your help ☺

  6. Received the report, the surveyor didn't actually check the batteries, but noted the leisure battery bank was flat on his arrival at the test.

Looking back at a recent visit to view the NB, it was a frosty morning and with a little effort the starting battery fired her up, so the battery can't be all that bad

I think I will suck up the cost of new leisure batteries as most of the report was favourable and the negative points noted were mostly anticipated prior to negotiations, and as such reflected our price pitched.

Many good comments giving food for thought, but we will attempt to make our way to our new moorings with generator and battery charger to hand in case of emergency, hopefully this side of Christmas. A two day cruise, so should hopefully get some juice into those batteries before she rests for a while.

Im hoping to spend much of the next few months getting the NB into a better shape in preparation for the spring.

So.................. I think it safe to say I'll be back with more questions before long.

    Cheers

  7. What test did the surveyor carry out to know that the batteries were near end of life or is he acting on the age of the batteries?

I'm still awaiting his final report, but he had the engine running and the lights were very dim when he turned off the engine to discuss this.

Hopefully. The report should arrive In the next few days.

MJG - yes the sale is through a broker, I will scrutinise the contract ☺

  8. Hi all

Survey done, I met the surveyor briefly during his work. He outlined several issues, many of which were expected to be brought to our attention

However, the surveyor informed us that the battery bank and starting battery are ready for renewal.

I queried if I should go back to the broker to haggle the agreed price down a little.

He said basically batteries were to be considered consumable items and as such, I will have little recourse.

I'm thinking, that if when I leave the marina heading to our new moorings, these fail and we're left in a pickle, I'm not going to be too happy........

I accept we have probably managed to get this boat at a good price, and I may be rocking the boat (no pun intended) by attempting to shave extra off the asking price.

TBH I'm looking for some of your views and would welcome your valued experience in these matters.

    Cheers

  9.

Yeah, I made an offer below asking price (I'm the kind of person willing to haggle in primark tongue.png ) It's 98 according to the advert but in my head I had it as a 89. Might need to phone the surveyer and talk about price again.

Congratulations, I'm in a similar position to yourself.

Dare I ask how cheeky your offer was?

I was quite surprised how easily we were able to slice 5k+ from the asking price ☺

I'm very keen to know how much you old hats value our new prospective narrow boat, but it can wait for now.
