  1. Sounds like it may be barred. May also be worth calling 101 which is obviously the non-emergency number. If they think it requires urgent attention just explain the issue you had and they will likely re-route your call. If you can't dial out to that, then it definitely sounds like emergency numbers are barred, in which case you will need to contact your network operator. I am assuming calls to other landlines and mobile numbers work OK.

  2. It is likely to be one of two things:

    - Theme issue/bug
    - Dodgy internet connection as mentioned

Unfortunately sporadic issues that are not easy to replicate are the hardest ones to diagnose and fix but if it is an issue with the theme then it's likely to be fixed by the designer in a future update. That said, I had this issue once while I was connected to a VPN. I disconnected from the VPN and then it was OK. This supports the dodgy internet connection theory but equally, that could have been a coincidence. Has anyone experienced this issue while using the "Legacy" theme?

I can assure you that the server is not being overloaded. If this were to happen, we'd receive automated alerts. The only time it runs under significant load is when backups run at 4am in the morning but it still has adequate capacity to run the site itself.

But why on the innocuous Shroppie post?

No idea, sorry. I don't get involved in moderation related matters unless it's something that could put the site in jeopardy in some way, e.g. security concern. Typically content is removed from view if it's in breach of the forum rules & guidelines in some form or if the OP requested for it to be removed from view.

I note you messaged Athy though it appears he has been offline for a few days. You may wish to contact another Moderator. A full list can be found on the page below.

  4. I have since changed the wording of this error message from "You do not have permission to view this topic." to "This topic is no longer available." - Hopefully that will help prevent any confusion in future bearing in mind the message does have to be generic.

It is likely that the topic you're trying to view has been hidden hence you see that error.

As a rule of thumb, mods do not delete offending topics, they hide them. However, it takes a while for it to update on any activity streams or notifications. If you can confirm the topic you're trying to view, we can confirm if that is indeed the case in this instance.

  6. Seems quite obvious one was approaching a bend too fast while the other was on the wrong side. Both at fault! Had they sounded the horn this wouldn't have happened. That said, I'm sure most of us have been in a similar situation at some point!

I like watching Foxes Afloat. They're the only vloggers I follow nowadays. Well edited, interesting bits of history, informative and funny. Despite having a new boat and despite being relatively new vloggers, they have actually been boating on and off for many years, so are more experienced than many give them credit for. - I do think they should pay a little more attention to where they're going though!

All fine and dandy, except some folk won't have the skills to update hardware, and some devices ( smartphones, tablets, Apple kit ) are designed to be not user updateable.

That is correct but equally that's why there's still computer shops around who will provide this service for a PC or laptop, albeit to a lesser extent. Smart phones generally have 3-5 year lifespans, particularly when factoring security updates. I am not suggesting that if people want to use Canal World they should always go out and upgrade their PC/laptop. That comment was more around general performance issues on aging computers.

Appreciate people may not have the funds to upgrade & replace but that's another conversation. That aside, it doesn't take much to run Canal World on an end-user device but if people run into problems we will often suggest they ensure their browser is up to date etc. Even the latest web browser will run on 5+ year old computer hardware.

Thanks RichM.  I think a lot of the updates for Firefox and probably W10 also include a load of stuff for Aps, smart phones, eyepads and whatnot, well I haven't any of that just laptops and I think it all clutters up the browser, slows it down ect.  I downloaded the Firefox browser for Desktops and seems to have done the trick. Smartphone would be a nuisance for me, too big to go into my inside pockets, I'll feel a fool goin about clutching it all the time like many folk seem to and getting it swiped by moped robbers. In the summer when jackets are not needed.  I need a handbag like Maggie Thatchers, I don't think.

I get what you're saying but in general I recommend keeping all software up to date. Developers maintain software by updating it. This largely entails fixing bugs and yes, implementing new features (which often come with more bugs!) It is an ongoing cycle but equally, not one to be ignored. It is at least in some ways similar to how mechanics maintain engines by servicing them and replacing worn/broken parts or similar to how engineers design new cars to keep up with modern demands and requirements.

The reason why new software may slow down your computer is because while you're updating your software, you may not be updating your hardware to keep up with it. While this is fine and absolutely normal for a period of time, over time (years) you will notice your computer become slower and slower unless you bring your hardware up to date too. Is this reason to keep running older/out of date software? No, at least not in the long term.

The thing with technology is that it's constantly changing & evolving, it doesn't stop or pause and it is something people should embrace and keep up with. Of course, they don't have to, but they will fall behind and invariably run into more problems as a result. I know which I'd rather do!

  9. Certainly odd that it happens in more than one browser but given that it is not happening to everyone, I'd go as far as saying it's unlikely to be a server-side issue.

I did have this issue myself and it was caused by my browser caching the old theme. (It is updated approx. 3-4 times a year) and although the theme looks more or less the same, it's actually replaced each time as per the developer's recommendations. To resolve it, I had to hard refresh my browser cache. Instructions can be found here:

    https://fabricdigital.co.nz/blog/how-to-hard-refresh-your-browser-and-clear-cache

It also goes without saying that ensuring you are running the latest browser is also recommended. Older browsers may not support some of the code used by the forum software and in those scenarios you may encounter glitches similar to those reported in this topic.

For anyone who encounters this issue. - If you have done all this and the issue remains, I recommend switching to the "Legacy" theme (only as a test - unless you prefer it) by clicking the "Theme" text link at the very bottom left of the page. - Please then advise on the outcome when using that. In the event that you still cannot post/reply, there's also a Contact Us link at the bottom of the page.

Watching the plethora of media content, I really do get the appeal of living on a boat.

But viewing the various Facebook groups, the detachment from reality is frightening.

Without  any prior experience you sell up and buy a boat. Then you ask the obvious questions.

We moor on a narrow canal, yet several boats here are widebeams. They can never leave the marina. I find the scenario rather sad. But of course,  horses for courses.

    Just find it odd.

Why sad? Some people just want to be by the water and obviously you can't get much closer to it than being on a boat. At least, not without getting wet!

For anyone who likes to travel and explore or otherwise not be restricted in terms of moorings, then sure - a wide beam is not the most practical choice. On the other side of the coin, I'm not a particularly big guy but having to walk like a crab to get from the front to the back of the boat did get a bit tedious after 4 years of living aboard a 55ft narrowboat. Can certainly see the appeal of having something a little wider...

  11. If anyone is interested in life onboard a catamaran, I recommend subscribing to Youtube channel "Sailing La Vagabonde". It's in effect a documentary of a young Australian family who for the most part sail around the world on an Outremer catamaran.

I know there's a lot of animosity on here about "vloggers" who make videos on Youtube with very little experience or knowledge but I can confidently say that's not the case here. They make content that is of professional quality and well worth a watch.

  12. Would love a catamaran or at least some kind of seagoing vessel that has the same amount of space as a narrowboat for similar money. I don't understand why they're so expensive in comparison especially when most are made out of plastic!

  13. Wish I thought of this when I had my narrowboat. I hated painting and everything that went with it. So with vinyl, I imagine you could prime the entire boat with red oxide and/or primer and then vinyl on top?

  14. Oh wow, what a characteristic boat.

To be honest I wouldn't feel bad about the mishap. Arguably eBay is not really the "right place" to be selling boats anyway! More likely to attract the wrong type of buyer/interest etc.

  15. I think I posted something similar before though I have been boatless for more than a year now but still don't know what my next boat will be. Ideally I'd want a boat that is suitable for predominantly river cruising but also more than capable of going out to sea for circa £30k or less.

The closest I've found is a cabin cruiser like the one below but there's a few things that put me off:

    - Do I really need a 4.0+ litre petrol engine? Powerboating isn't really what I'm after

    - Not much in the way of practicality/interior space

    - More suited to sea rather than rivers

Bayliner boats for sale - boats.com

Appreciate this is perhaps not the most suited forum but I'm sure there's people who may have some idea as to the type of boat that may suitable,

    Cheers
