    And keep an eye on what the boats doing as you wind the bridge up.

     

    Even a slight forward motion can result in the not fully raised yet bridge wiping out your tunnel light gubbins.

     

    You might wonder how I know this.........................

  2. Well there are some funny people on the cut just as there are everywhere. However in terms of the forum representing real life it all depends on which threads you visit. Yes if you hang around the "political" ones like this it can seem depressing. But elsewhere in the forum there are lots of threads with people posing questions and problems, and lots of replies from people going out of their way to be helpful.

    Yes I agree and all the help I've had from everyone is really appreciated, everyone's been really helpfull with my questions.

     

    I have asked for a voluntary 6 month break for personal reasons but have a smashing Christmas everyone and keep Toasty warm.

  3. You are spot on .. We have now been retired and Ccrs for two and a half years and to say we feel like the scum of the waterways is an understatement.. Not just on this forum , but as soon as you mention that you don't have a home marina or home mooring people just look down their noses at you. Yes we have a shiny and newish boat , but as soon as you say that you are a Ccrs everything changes. Its such a shame as most of the Ccrs we have met have been the salt of the Earth and the most friendliest people we have ever met, My advice would be to ignore the few idiots on this forum that are anti Ccrs and come and join us genuine Ccrs and enjoy life on the cut with like minded people...

    I guess funny buggers are everywhere, stuff em !

    I will take people as I find them once I become a live aboard, I hope it's nothing like the forum portrays.

     

    I started posting on here all stary eyed about my new adventure and now I just think owe gord theirs some funny buggers on the Canals.

     

    I think I will keep a low profile when I get on the Canal and be nice to everyone who is nice, miserable gits will get ignored and short changed.

  4. Don't for one second think the kind of stuff you read on here is reflective of what you see out on the cut, even from some people on here you might think are ant CCers/anyone else.

     

    It's worth taking notice of the "you can't do that" type posts though, follow the arguments and take a view when you decide what to do in a given situation.

I don't even have a narrowboat of my own yet and I will be a marina user for at least 2 years while under the NHS but my plan is to CC eventually, I've got to say this forum has a lot of discrimination towards Constant Cruisers and they are nearly always placed in the Norty Book of Rule Breakers even though many abide by the CC Rules.

     

    Apparently even those who play ball with the CRT umpires have gotten norty letters, all I see as a new comer to the Canals is a load of Bitching and most of it is coming from a select few nosey swine know it alls.

     

    This Forum is running at 68% bitchin. 32% friendly.

  6. Just to add to my last post theirs nothing wrong with boats been left empty as far as I understand the rules, if people pay their online mooring fees and move within the designated time then it's no one's bloody business.

     

    Unless CRT have started chaining people to their boats while moored up.

I use to canoe the Macclesfield canal a few years back and I was shocked by the amount of half sunk Moss covered boats both GRP and the occasional Narrowboat, I dont like busy body's who go around reporting other boats business or what boat owners get up too that crap annoys me but I don't understand how derelict boats can be left in such a state on the Mac Canal given all the CRT Voodoo clampdown that is portrayed on here.

  8. Jotamastic 87 two-pack epoxy doesn't require any primer. It can go straight onto properly prepped steel, so in that sense I suppose it could be called a primer, but it isn't porous. It can be over painted with Jotamastic Hardtop if required but the Hardtop is mainly cosmetic. After consulting Jotamastic technical support, on my boat I used 2 coats of Jotamastic 87 with aluminium, plus 2 coats of Jotamastic 87 black. I didn't use any Hardtop.

    I read the data sheet on that although it's not a primer as such more of a one coat application it does sound to be good stuff.

     

    I still don't care what anyone says red oxide primer is Crap as final coat and well behind the times in protective coatings even just as if only used as a primer, i made the massive mistake of painting a bare metal landrover chassis in it and rust spots bleed after 12 months.

     

     

    I will stick to what I trust and been taut.

  9. Even 2 pack high build primers such as sickens/ice and dupont are all porous, I've yet to come across any primer that isn't.

     

    When I worked on aerospace parts that i painted they all came with air worthiness job spec sheets Far/Cs, maybe I was guilty in generalising all red oxide brands on this thread maybe because of its reputation of being an old skool coating.

     

    I stand by what I say too red oxide primer is not a top coat nor does it have final coat protection qualitys.

     

    Daniel I am sure you know Fermec, they subcontracted a lot of JCB work to Richmond Metal Refinishers and I've probably painted 1000s of Hydraulic rams and pipes for JCB in that crap Epoxy yellow they supplied us which does not cover very well.

     

    God I hate JCB yellow. Pffft.

     

    I've delivered them too which was amazing going inside the JCB grounds. :-)

  10. Indeed so, my point however is simply that using the 'red oxide' to detail paint spec is false, because it details is the painta colour. Both of the above links where found in 30secs googling on my phone and only very loosely vetted.

  11. I've never seen red oxide used as a top coat because it is historically known to be pourous to water and oxygen, without seeing the data sheet on the carplan link or using it i can't comment.

     

    (Carplan in general is crap)

     

    Saying that the few boats I've seen painted with red oxide on their roofs and decks look great. ☺

    Ah but for someone not so experienced a meter will help them to get a feel for how the texture and weight changes as it dries out. After a couple of winters she probably will not need it, but for less than a tenner it seemed like a good idea.

    Better than burning wet wood and all the problems that go with it.

  13. As you have access to 'free wood' be aware that it takes about 3 years to season, one of these is worth having if you go down that road.

    Wood such as oak & beech is better than pine as pine contains a lot of resin.

    The trees on his farm are mainly beech trees, with a bit of luck he will let me have wood that's already been stored for a while in payment of me helping him with hay making in the summer.
