  1. I dunno where to put this, but it's forum-related.

I have only just noticed, after several years, that I have some 'friends', and I can see who they are. I hadn't even thought about adding people as 'friends'!

How do I go about adding all those new 'friends' to my OWN list of 'friends'?

Just click on their name and click add friend.

Proud and much appreciated you accepted me as your online friend because I like you.

    Virtual shoulder push. Lol

  2. Housing Benefit certainly does not come under politics, I have researched this and yes an individual can claim for housing costs.

It would need to be a residential marina, and the individuals sole address, with a post code..

I am not going down this route just yet but I could do if I needed too.

  3. I think your dumbing yourself down. I seem to recall Phil Speight mentioned he paid to have his classic car spray painted by someone else as he felt he lacked the spraying skills to do it himself to high standard.

Prep detail is important but also the experience of the material itself.

Yer I kinda do that but cars are a different ball bag. Lol

OMG I feel my age saying ball bag.

    Blinking parents. Lol

  4. A good spray painter has skills which are just as worthy as those equally as good with a brush.

Sign writing is in a different league though, requiring artistic talent as well as technical skill.

Name changes are supposed to bring bad luck. Personally I think its worth the risk if you can't live with the original!

On the subject of preparing the name panel, it will need thoroughly flatting off else the original artwork will grin through when you catch it in the light.

Yer but I am still amazed at some braid bar boat paint finishes, I was a pro vehicle paint sprayer/refinisher for vw/audi/volvo for years but narr I still think the brush painters have more skill.

They amaze me and I would love that skill.

Maybe I will go to college again and learn the old ways.

The prep work is always the same whether brush or spray, it's all about detail.

Being honest I think my previous job has affected my life in the way of obsessive thinking about details.

    Truth that.

  5. Not at all.

As a working signwriter, I've been asked this question many times and the answer, to the surprise of many is to flat back the original panel completely, getting rid of every trace of old lettering prior to repainting before re-lettering. Any old stuff remaining will doubtless show up slightly under new paint. If the existing paint job is tired, old or faded then the new panel, may well look rather prominent...only you can decide whether it's live-able with. I'm speaking, of course, of hand painted lettering. Vinyl can often be removed using heat, but the panel would still need to be cut back ( Farecla G3 paste is good stuff ) before proceeding, as vinyl is removed the shadow of its presence remains. Happy to talk you through this, PM me,...not looking for work!

    Cheers

    Dave

    Hia Dave,

I feel quite honoured that you replied to my post.

Yep I kinda thought it would be a matter of panel and swage edges but was i a bit unsure if their was a trick.

I would love to learn proper coach painting I like the old ways especially when it comes to narrowboats and trains.

Much respect dave and blinking vinyl can bugger off.

    Thank you

    Only by superstitious people.

2 true, I've actually seen a ghost in real life and had a picture to prove it but superstition is always in the eye of the beholder.

  6. I am a paint sprayer but those sign writers and coach painters in my book have more skill.

Anyhow say we have a boat and it was called something naff and we wanted to change the name what's the crack?

Do they sand the whole bordered box area down and start afresh or do they have a trick up their sleeve and just paint the area near the name?

Maybe this is a daft question.

  7. I find that to rid my windlassess of unsightly green paint, my pat pending sand paper gloves do the job quick smart, I can get a windlass back to bare metal by the time I get to the bottom of the Hanwell flight..

Dragons Den stuff is that, flipping eck.

My Windlass said galvanised but it come painted in naff silver alloy wheel paint.

Robin Swindlers, I actually knew some bloke in Buxton called Robin Swindler once, he was a landrover nutter.

  8. I still like a game of Scrabble, but Monopoly... good grief. I tried it again at Christmas and it is just a rotten game. Hour after hour of watching the inevitable winner very slowly pull further and further ahead while everyone else very slowly goes bankrupt.

That's life though all over. Ha

Their was a game called Game of Life.

I guess we all play that one for a while.

  9. trouble with trivial pursuit is questions can be so out of date on some topics and also one player normally so much brainer than tother meaning my one question and wrong answer sees me sit n wait whilst tother person answers the next zillion right..boring...

I think me and dad might be a bit juiced if we're playing board games patty, tother person maybe more so. Hehe

Have you seen pushing point on TV thats really good, it's like push a penny. Lol

  10. Magictime has some great suggestions, Carcassonne is a favourite of mine, various add ons keep it fresh. Can I also post you to

    http://www.boardgamegeek.com

there you will find tons of information on lots of boardgames. Things have moved on quite a bit from scrabble and monopoly B)

Lol that link brings up this page it was da Ja voo.

Fanks though, some good suggestions on here.

Picked up an original Trivial Pursuit from a charity shop recently for a couple of quid. Still good fun. Otherwise Backgammon.

I forgot all about that ☺

What about 'who wants to be a millionaire ?'

  11. A canal Monopoly would be good.

Yer instead of goto jail it could be replaced with a section 8. :-(

    Ow wow that looks cool.

    Cheers Tim.

Backgammon. Carcassonne (I have never played it with just 2 but apparently you can). Othello (used to be called Reversi in my young days but basically the same game).

    Thanks

  12. Semi serious, possibly a "Bizzard" type idea?

Why not design a canal version of Snakes an Ladders? Call it Lockgates & Ladders?

Fall off a lock gate go back 5 spaces, swim to ladder go froward 3 spaces.

Fail to tie boat up securely, miss a turn and so forth.

    captain.gif

    Haha

That made me chuckle, what a corking idea!

  13. Spot on Mike C. The man I knew didn't match this song either. Massive use of other peoples photos in the video all uncredited, photographers such as Harry Arnold, Hugh MkNight have pictures featured. Also, what the F*** has Toovey's wide boat "Golden Spray" got to do with Charlie Atkins, at 12ft it would never get to Birmingham city or Cadburys. I am no fan of folk music as all the boatmen I knew only liked the popular music of the day, this production to me is inaccurate and awful.

Maybe it's not factually accurate but so what it's a nice thought.

I'll keep that in my head as a goto place none the less but fanks for spoiling it.

  14. Thanks for the replys and advice everyone and patty thanks for writing all that.

Much appreciated as always, I think keeping our heads down and being quite will help for sure.

Ow and not fastening a clothes line to the next boat my help too lol.

    We're a quite family anyway.

Fingers crossed it'll all work out.

  15. Inland Marina's in Yorkshire are a lot cheaper then other parts of the country 57ft Narrowboat depending on location anything from £1300-£2200 per year leisure, even cheaper in certain Marina's like Strawberry Island Doncaster. You must be looking at the Yuppie Plastic boaty marina's or residential berths which are normally £3000-£4000 if you can find them.

I recon your right I must of clicked on the Google favourites.

Maybe one day I might change location and Yorkshire appeals very much.

Sorry for any confusion on mooring fees everyone. My mistake.

  16. First stop is to look at their Ts & Cs; often they're a bit vague.

There's a reason for that - they're mainly for 'authority' to view.

A number don't care too much - but they don't want to fall foul of any council tax liability. Others rely on them if unofficial liveaboards don't keep their heads down and start making a mess, noise etc, etc.

Boating has hitherto always bee on a live and let live basis, but nowadays folks take advantage of that - to the detriment of us all.....

Yep I can see what you say, obviously we want to be in the good books being new to the marina and they come a cross really flexible but leave us playing rubicube in our heads a bit.

    Thanks

  17. Yes vague as hell is how they come a cross, understandable but confusing.

We won't be staying in the marina very much but plan a cycle of movement 10 miles either way left to right from the marina with a 7 day a month marina stay.

Well that's the plan but the unknowing of what's allowed is a bit foggy.
