  1. After  watching  David interview Mr Parry which I thought he did an excellent job, David asked how people like us can help and Mr Parry stated that we could find something to do apart from contacting our local member(don't think the member for Collie in Western Australia will help much) in the Keep Canals Alive section on Canal & River Trusts website. As far as I can see people like us, overseas owners of narrowboats and there are many of us are not able to help apart from donations. If the politicians haven't realised how much we contribute to the British economy as do all boat owners, we spend on average 600gbp every week we are here and that is usually between 5 and six months every year and that is without any major repairs or upgrades to our boat.

Also the word used was 'tarmacking' which is actually a verb. It is generic and can apply to other similar surfaces.

'Blessèd are the cheesemakers' does not only apply to people who make cheese.

    Unfinished?

Does it need a little white line down the middle with gaps?

What about double yellows and duck lanes.

Or maybe they need some signage

    That should sort it.

Surely you jest, suggesting that cyclists can read is just a step too far. Also maybe 15 mph is still too fast. They won't take any notice as I said they can't read.

I just regard insurance as basically a swindle, so ignore it as much as possible. All my houses have been insured which has been free money for the companies. Most of my cars were 3rd party, and would be now except it's virtually the same as fully comp. The boat has always been 3rd party + recovery if it sinks.

I've asked before on here - how many people have ever made a claim on their insurance? And got back more than they would have saved on premiums otherwise? I'd set up a survey, but apathy has struck again.

We made a claim in early 2020 when water entered the engine via the exhaust and were extremely happy with the pay out.

Because we now had a new engine in a 2002 boat and quite a bit of other work done we wanted to increase our insured value which our insurance  company required a survey valuation. We went back to them with a written valuation from our local broker, which they accepted.  It is now insured for more than 50% above what we paid for it in 2015.

  4. We insure with insurance-4-boats and would thoroughly recommend them. Had a large claim with them in 2020(new motor) and were very impressed.

We are also from the land of more sunlight like yourself, although if I remember correctly you are from bleak city, Melbourne.

All three cross Pennine routes are currently closed, so the only way to Ripon by inland water is via the Trent. Doesn't sound like the ideal level of knowledge, or likely to do the preparation to take on the tidal Trent, or tidal Ouse in Autumn. 😮

Given that he was watching people do the lock to learn how to do locks and single handing I think your assumption is quite correct.

  6. I would love to visit our boat, but just a bit far to drop in for the day. On a more serious note we are booked to fly in on 30/5/21 subject to our government  getting there a@#s into gear and getting us vaccinated.  Keeping our fingers crossed.

  7. Just an update on my original topic. After getting a few replies that basically told me what we already knew that canalboat life is one of the safest places to be in the UK during a pandemic. Not many of you will know that there is only one country(not Russia, China or North Korea) that will not let it's citizens leave without special permission because of covid, Australia. Just  after I started this topic with the replies that I recieved, I made my submission for exemption from the travel ban, very much thinking we had no chance. Much to my surprise on Sunday we received an email from our government granting permission.

Sadly due to a shoulder issue I may need an operation in the next few weeks so this year is out but the exemption is transferable so we at least can soon start booking our flights for March 2021.

  8. Having a smaller population we have carried out far more testing per capita than in the UK and we in the West have been locked off from the rest of Australia for months and are approaching level five conditions here which means apart from borders being closed we are nearly back to normal. We are having 50% crowds to football games from Thursday and if there hadn't been a spike in Victoria we would have been at level 5 on Saturday.

I read blogs and watch vlogs and on here of course and until I started this thread I had only heard of one probable(Rich from "Floating Our Boat") so apart from my submition to our "great" leaders I was just curious to hear from forum members.

One of the side effects of all the social distancing, hand sanitizing  etc is even though we are in the middle of our winter our friends and us have seen virtually no colds or flu this year.
