There are normally moorings available at Engineers Wharf in Northolt.
It's not too far from Northolt Tube Station.

Well I'm pleased to see you are an avid student of BOILERSPEKE!
I'm always shocked at how few peeps no how to speel 'bote' krekctly.
Given my job I don't have a lot of choice if I want the work lads to unnerstan' me.
I had to learn a whole new language (boilerspeke) to be accepted!

* sings badly * I so luckee! luckee, luckee, luckee!
I was woken up this morning by ducks pecking the side of the
boatbote. How amazing is that. (or at least I hope that was what was happening!)I woke up laughing.
I tried to feed the ducks but they swam off with disdainful looks! Obviously my offerings were sub-optimal.
I cant wait to get on one. People try scare you off it for many reasons, but for me, id rather pay 20 grand odd for a never ending adventure of many subjects, than live in bricks and mortar and pay a mortgage till im about dead. Ive got mental health issues, psyhical issues, yet keeping active helps me, i have an overactive mind, im brilliant with engines, mechanicals, electricals, i can fix anything, so yeah, what you just described sounds like fun to me lol
Hi Scrabble, I knew that people would try to put me off so I simply didn't tell most of them until the day I moved on.
The look on my sons face was classic! He was very shocked and worried as I have some mobility problems but as long as I keep active by moving/walking I'm ok. He's now happy, because I am happy. Though I had a long lecture about falling in, over etc. :-D
I hope you get your boat soon - this truly has been the best thing I've done. Life is an adventure, a journey - so go for it!

OMFG - I live on a boat

What a lovely first day...can one ask about the unpacking?...how much designated to return to store and from then on car boot and charity shop!
I like watching wildlife. my normal mooring on my oh so brief jaunts out(still renovating decrepit cottage) is opposite little sis where there are ducks aplenty, moorhens, few swans and field of young beef cattle with attitude..love watching "the boys" as she calls them....no footpaths or ramblers there!
The unpacking went really well - there is so much storage in my new home. I had a break from 'chores' to have a glass of wine and a picnic whilst watching the sun go down. There are a few things that I really do need from the Lock up, but not a lot! The rest shall be re-distributed ASAP as I don't really want to pay monthly fees for storing 'stuff'.
Am cooking brekkie and watching the ducks at the moment! what more could I want?

I've had an awesome day. I've had swans sedately swimming by, noisy ducks flapping around, a toad on the towpath, a fisher person catching a fish right next to my boat, a picnic as the sun went down but the highlight has to be
the cyclist who nearly fell off as he tried to get around some Ramblers! He nearly went SPLOSH!
I was vaguely disappointed when he didn't. The excitment was ... thrilling!!!
I'm moored opposite a bike gate thingie so my new hobby is watching the cyclists trying to get through it.
Small things make me happy!
-
Well, thank you all for your lovely replies! I slept extremely well amongst the piles of clothes that I'm probably not going to need.
It was beautiful to wake up this morning and watch the ducks, sit out on deck and I even managed to make breakfast on the range cooker! :-)
I do now realise that I really do not need any of the stuff that I carefully put into a Storage Locker, so I reckon a carboot sale might have to feature in my future.
The sun is shining and I am truly happy.
Edit to fix typo - I'm a bit strange about things like that
-
Oh my goodness, thank you all for the responses.
Doors and hatches safely closed (hence no finger nails).
I'm still furtling with the heating :-D but I've got a blankie ready cos I'd rather be too cold than too hot!
and I am very much happier about waking up tomorrow morning.
Even though I have a load of boxes to empty, and it's a bloody long walk to the car :-D

Here I am ... first night on my boat.
Listening to the strange noises and drinking a large gin.
Feeling like I've come home.
All finger nails broken. Probably lost a least a stone in weight YAY.
Worked out you can't push a trolley thingie. You have to pull
It rained. But mostly the sun shone.
I saw a bloody HUGE fish, many cats, some chickens (??) several ducks and quite a few swans
Already blown a light fuse (thank goodness for mobile phone lighting - must get torches out of storage).
It's too warm (that's what hatches and doors are for?).
The TV and broadband work. At the moment.
Haven't managed to unpack much (apart from the Gin obvs)
Happy, but tired.

Will check the pub - just had lunch at the Jolly Cricketers in Seer Green which was pretty nice
Seer Green is a lovely spot!
the Hedgerley pub is called The White Horse - they do a Beer Festival every bank holiday weekend! Head for the Beaconsfield services, when on the Services roundabout veer off left, follow the road, turn right at the end and it's not far to the village. Watch out for the wildlife though - they don't understand cars :-D
-
Yes the Chilterns is a nice area and my ma is going to be underground in a basket in a woodland burial site near beaconsfield next week in the same area as an old git friend from her bowling club was buried. Although she died suddenly she had told us where she wanted to be buried...
On way to sort out the burial plot now actually. A bit off topic but it's my own topic so probably get away with it
More off topic ... I just drove past that Burial ground on my way back from hunting wild damsons. It's a lovely spot! And there's a fantastic real Ale pub not far away in Hedgerley.

Ah, forgot to add this:
http://www.pbo.co.uk/expert-advice/expert-answers/how-to-repack-a-stern-gland-step-by-step-1031
oh my.
Wow.
I can do that.
I reckon.
*wanders off to think*
Great another female driver on the cut..wonderful..enjoy!
Don't worry about the list..Ive not got half that stuff..
Wot is essentail is spanner thingy for them bolts near the stern greaser tube cos it don't half drip when you forget.
I've got quite a few spanner thingies, some of them seem to be adjustable.
I've got a greaser tube, but maybe I need to check that it's the right kinda thing for boats ....

Hey you ARE still alive!!
While we're on the subject of birthday pressies, the one I expect you sent me never arrived...
Still alive. I've been busy getting rid of my life and making lists of all the things I need to have ready for my move!
If you want a pressie you'll have to come fetch it!
So ... I've packed the following (plus a few other essentials):
Adjustable spanner
Hammer
Saw
WD40
Penetrating oil * sniggers *
Blow lamp
Pipe wrench
Multimeter
DC clamp meter
Gaffa tape
Axe
Bin liners
Goat
Gin
Jubilee clips
Lanterns
Music radio
Non-stick saucpan
Oil - engine, gearbox, cooking
Rubber gloves
Scrubbing brush
Tube gun (for sealants)
Umbrella
Vacuum cleaner (also bags and filters)
Work gloves
Xylophone (OK, X is a hard one)(as with G - perhaps you could teach the goat to play the xylophone on long dark Winter nights?)
Yak (if goat turns out to be a failure)
The Quorn sausage was veto'd in favour of Bacon and Black Pudding from the Farmers Market!
The goat ain't happy sharing with the Yak, but luckily I've got the Rubber gloves, scrubbing brush and the Tube gun to deal with that little problem!
Is it OK to swap the Xylophone for my Ukulele (if that doesn't put people off I need to up my game)
-
Adjustable spanner
Hammer
Saw
Selection of wood screws
Selection of nuts and bolts
WD40
Penetrating oil
Blow lamp
Pipe wrench
Multimeter
DC clamp meter
Gaffa tape
Oh hang on, we're up to two toolboxes now, at least!
ok - so that's my Birthday and Xmas pressie lists sorted!
-
What sort of beer are they flogging in the pub up the cut from you?
whatever it is, I think I'd like some!
-
-
Hey! Mort'.
Nice one.
Well? What's the boat like?
Do tell. Then we can all take the pee and scare the hell out of you. (But only in jest).
Anyway. Well done.
Rob....
When I make a decision I don't mess about!
She's a 58' Cruiser Stern built by Liverpool Boatbuilders.
I'm scared to say too much about it just in case anything goes wrong!!
Everything about her appears perfect for me and my strange little ways.
I was looking for a Trad but as soon as I got on board - I pretty much knew that I was going to have to buy her.
She's been well maintained and I have a copy of the survey that was done a few years ago - plus I have the option to get a survey done in a couple of weeks if I want.
So fingers crossed.
-
Thank you all.
Survey? What survey!!!
I can't believe that it's actually happening! My dream
/nightmareis coming true.I suspect that celebratory amounts of Gin are likely to be consumed over the next few weeks!
-
Quite.
Don't kid yourself you'll be choosing which boat to buy. The right boat will choose YOU.
When you eventually view the right boat you'll have no choice in the decision to buy it.
(Which you will have to do of course, regardless of the results of any survey you might commission )
this happened. Bloody hell.
I've just paid a deposit on the boat that chose me.
* slightly stunned *

oooh - thanks for the landrover comments (and interesting picture) - I've also got an ancient Landrover (1962 Series 2a with a capstan winch ) which is insured with a specialist Classical car insurer. I'll double check the small print.
Edit to correct typoo
-
I once had my car insurance revoked. They accepted me, with the marina address. Something made me, a couple of weeks later, just check they realised I lived on a boat. I forget why I checked now, anyway, they promptly withdrew their insurance from my car, even though the address was acceptable on their computer system. It seems they see boaters as travellers and refuse to insure travellers! I ended up taking a complaint through via my MP. I got an apology, refund and a token compensation, but they still held I was uninsured Le because of living on a boat. I always make it clear now if asked, from the start, as I'm sure it would be used as a get out clause by them otherwise, we're I to claim. The fact I was a business owner (on land) with full no claims, made no difference at all, nor that it was parked in a secure compound overnight!
thanks for that Ally ... that is almost exactly what happened to my friend! I knew I wasn't imagining it!
and thanks Jo - I'll check when I'm there tomorrow.

Hello peeps, isn't the weather lovely!?
I've been very lucky in my search for the boat that wishes to own me and, remarkably, I may have the chance of a permanent residential mooring. This is most unexpected as I planned to CC.
All my finances were planned based on CC'ing, so I'm having to rethink things ... d'ya reckon that my car insurance is likely to rocket if I give them a marina address?
That might seem like a strange question - but I am sure one of my friends had a massive increase in his car insurance when he moved into a Marina (as opposed to the 'rentals house that he 'lived' in).
Is it just down to Post code - or do they consider Liveaboard people a higher insurance risk?
Be gentle with me guys 'n gals.
