  1. Stoke locks on an Autumn night in a spectacuar thunder and lightning storm. One of my best boaty moments.

Don't see any probs with late night boating, in fact I do quite a lot of it as we would often be somewhere else after getting home from work. Nary a problem but again we're both confident enough and keep an eye out for problems.

  2. Nice to see someone else has done this trip

Don't let the miserable gits put you off, they haven't got anything better to do

What was the problem with Goole by the way ?

Cost me £17.59p to use this massive lock.

I know what you mean about those container ships

    Nice report and photo's

  3. Quote from NBW

A NARROWBOAT, a 50ft trad named Bengal, index number 73456 was taken from Pillings Lock Marina on the Soar on or around the 13/4/09 without permission, it's 50% owner, P A Jones, tells us.

He believes it was hired out without a hire licence, and as far as he is concerned the boat has been stolen, and would appreciate being contacted on sighting of the boat, and would assist in its recovery.

Reading this I take it the 2 owners don't get on  and the other has lent the boat to a third party without Mr Jones permission.

  4. To quote paul from his posts last year

iam based in chester, the boat builder is in e port, he certainly doesnt do a stirling job on his boats! there are two builders side by side in the port , they work together under various names to supply shoody goods to unsuspecting customers.

    &

i am taking full responsibility!!! the shell builder put a decloration of conformity on the shell but this means nothing, he will not take any responsiblity for his shell. and he is still turning out the same standard shells.

i am in a corner, fighting bw about the width of the hurston lock, the shell builder. who doesnt want to know, and the customers who say the boat is unfit for purpose, who have happily lived on it for 18 months!hoping for compensation from me, for something i didnt do wrong in the first place!

    &

the boat is made to 6' 11" instead of 6' 10", i have had the boat up hurlston by playing with water levels, i do dot except the boat is unfit for purpose!it clearly is!the customers are trying it on, for cash compensation! after being told by a bw employee that they should sue the boat builder when they couldnt get it through hurlston!(bw passing the buck!) they are new to boats and tried to get it in the first lock at an angle, carlt if you know hurlston you will know its problems with bulges and bw wont except it needs fixing.

    7' 1/16" ?

If you were told (and have it in writing) from the shell builder that the beam was 6' 11"

Was this document produced in court ?

  5. Can I just say sorry for not checking the Flickr group first to see if anyone had already posted details.

Maybe the Admin on there would not object to you re-posting the photo of the poster every now and again in order to keep it on the front page for a while. No harm in asking them I guess....

    Regards

    Myk (aka MG/BS4 on Flickr)

just as easy to delete it and re submit.

its in the stolen boat discussion anyway.

  6. In addition to my earlier post......another idea would be for someone to join the Canals and Waterways Flickr group and actually post a photo of the poster that someone put up on here earlier. That way, anyone logging into that group will see the details.......maybe with a photo of the missing boat added. This can then be given a full description of what people are to look out for and in which areas. It's quite a busy group and I'm sure someone might offer some further advice.

    You can but try....

  7. Rivers fine at the moment approx time to newark would be around 8 1/2 -- 9 hours depending on locks

The biggest problem you will have is self locking on the Trent as there are no keepers due to Bw's blatant disregard for health and safety at this time of year

I suggest you do it in 2 parts spending a night topside of Stoke Lock (Bardolph) . Its a lovely place to moor and there are floating pontoons to moor to.

  8. Have you written a letter of complaint to Bw Yorkshire Navigations ?

As you didn't arrive at Keadby lock the alarm should have been raised and someone should have come looking for you .

That is why the tidal locks are not boater operated, so that boats are logged on and off the tideway .

If a boat does not arrive there must be a problem .

Last year I spent a night on the tidal side of Naburn lock as the keeper had logged off for the day (18.30) he had been told to expect me by Keadby who contacted me an hour into my trip to confirm this.

If anything had gone wrong I could have been washed out to sea (Naburns keeper couldn't give a toss !)

  9. Can we close this thread now ?

Our moorings have been saved !

I don't recall Pillings getting any negative comments on here

all comments were true as we saw them

as Carl has already stated British Waterays dragged Pillings into the argument from the very first letter !

If Pillings have a problem with that then they should take it up with BW !

I Have no problems or issue with Pillings Lock Marina ! I wish them well with their business

Thank you to everyone who helped save our moorings

Mods can you at the very least lock this thread or better than that delete it

as it is all in the past now .

    Lets move on

  10. Speaking as a single crewed boater , I always close gates and paddles behind me (unless another boat is approaching ).

So when I'm traveling down a long flight of locks and the boat in front is leaving the bottom gates and paddles open at every lock you can imagine my frustration !

Now if its a H&S issue like at Alrewas then fair enough but but Not every Lock !

This subject raises its ugly head from time to time (that Pillock Adrian Stott from waterways world magazine made my blood boil with an entire article on it {that was a big part in me canceling my subscription})

BW advise us all to close gates and paddles behind us !

On the Aire and Calder and the South Yorkshire Navigations Lock Keepers are available to assist commercial Traffic (sometimes a mobile lock keeper will drive between locks) to keep boats moving .

I'm sure this service would be available on other waterways if full scale commercial traffic were in need of it .

  11. I've moored on the castle moorings on a couple of occasions and found it to be a good place to moor.

The only downside is walking back through the park at night , its rather dark :) .

On another occasion when the moorings were full I moored on the towpath side , again no problems .

I'd rather moor there than some of the outer reaches of Leicester .

  12. I've known that for 35 years - but it's not relevant to anything in this thread

The Ashby is notoriously shallow .

    You could not turn.

When you tried to go above 2 knots you made excessive wash and were unable to speed up.

You hit a shallow section at speed and your bow dug in

    Sounds fair enough to me.

Here is another example from 4x4 driving

When you enter deep water you push a bow wave leaving a dip behind it for your engine to sit in,

keep the speed steady and don't stop and you'll continue like this to the other side .

If you stop or drive too fast the wave will collapse and your engine will get wet .

35 years and don't we know it :stop:

  13. Our maximum speed through the water is a little under 7mph - but I once timed us at 17mph on the Trent with a particularly strong tide behind us; that was quite exciting especially on some of the bends. It was scary to realise that even if I'd turned round and faced the other way I'd have been going backwards at more than 3mph.

On the topic of solitons, I'm wondering if I managed to create one by accident last year. There was a perfectly straight, fairly shallow stretch of canal near the top of the Ashby, and on 3 occasions last year (travelling North, then South, then North again) and equally on previous occasions I found that if I ever tried to go above 2mph I made a noticeable wash and couldn't go any faster. Then on my fourth trip (heading South) last year I was daydreaming and entered that section at 4mph; my stern raised itself into the air as my wake entered the narrow section behind me and caught me up, and I proceeded for over half a mile in that stern-high attitude, mainting 4mph under power and yet leaving no wash at all. The water level just changed smoothly as I passed, first down and then up a foot or more at my stern, yet there seemed to be no flow of water near the banks and absolutely no wash. After half a mile the boat moved about a foot to one side of the centre-line of the canal (bad steering) and immediately it all collapsed in a big surfing wave, and I had to slow down to 2mph again. Has anyone else experienced this effect?

In very shallow water your prop instead of pushing your boat forward, sucks the water from under your boat ! :stop:

This will slow you down and make it almost impossible to turn.

To speed up you have to slow down (reduce the rev's).

  14. Good news (I think ?)

I had a letter this morning from Caroline Killeavy informing us that they are retracting the previous closure

notice as BW are now reducing online moorings by the fairer means of natural wastage, as moorings become vacant BW will not re let them (Will this affect thier tendering practice I wonder ?).

All moorers at Sawley will be on full longtem status !

Now for the fly in the ointment

and to quote CK herself "Whilst it is still our intension to CLOSE Sawley cut to Long term moorers , we are offering all boaters currently moored there a Long term mooring permit UNTIL we are able to identify suitable alternatives for them "

So BW east midlands waterways who have said all along that the closure of the moorings at Sawley was

just National policy and out of their hands, Now the National policy has changed they are saying they want to close the moorings anyway ?

Well Thank you to everyone for their support we managed 324 signatures on the petition :D

This Victory is the end of the old fight but the begining of the new fight to

    SAVE SAWLEY CUT MOORINGS !

  15. I went in the Steamboat on Saturday night :D

New temporary managers (Tony & Gill) have taken over untill a new tennant can be found.

    Good news :

1, Guinness / John Smiths and Kroenberg were all half price £1.45p :)

2, Live music starts again on Saturdays (after Valentines day)

3, Quiz to return on Fridays

4, The return of the open fire B)

They are a very nice couple and seem to know what they are doing

So go along and see for yourselves I recomend it :D
