  1. Please remember that if you go to A&E you will have to wait, along time, you will be assessed by a nurse and then prioritised i.e cut finger can wait, leg hanging off will be seen quicker. If you have a minor problem you keep slippng backwards in the queue when someone else comes in with something more important to be dealt with.

An Ambulance should only be called if the condition is possibly life theatening or the person cannot be moved without pain and only immediatley after the incident not wait three days, this has happened.

True story: a man walked into A&E complaining of tooth ache, on a Sunday afternoon.

Asked when did the pain start, answer, Last Tuesday. When told he could not be treated became rather "agitated". Advice to him was go home take pain killers and contact dentist. The reason is there is never a dentist at an A&E and they are only open for true Emergencys.

There are the opposites of the above, generally the elderly lady but not always, who has for example: severe chest pain that will not go away and calls an Ambulance. On arriving one of the many questions asked when did it start, answer Couple of days ago I didn't want to trouble you as you are so busy.

Please just think for a few seconds, gather your thoughts, and then decide what help you really need.

  2. pardon me for asking but what is a spring ?

    alan (the ignoramus)

    Alan

you are not ignorant, we all had to ask in the beginning.

A spring is another rope to the bank. "Normally" when tying up on a canal only two ropes are used one at the front (bow) and one at the rear (stern).

The bow one goes forward and the stern one goes backwards from the boat.

A springer is another rope, sometimes attached to the same point, that goes in the opposite direction i.e. the bow goes back and the stern goes fowared so forming an equilateral triangle with bank. /-\ this helps to stop the boat moving about when other boats pass. You can use one or two.

I am woried that most of your customers have a colour deficiency in their eyesight.

Or do they just want people to see them, when on the cut, so they do not have to manoeuvre themselves out of the way.

:) Or did you find some "cheap" paint and like Mr. Ford say to them any colour you like as long as it is Bright red, blue or green :):)

I do apologise, to think I could say something like that after your support for my post.

  4. Eugene

I have started a new topic. "BW the rights and wrongs" I would ask you please to read from the beginning. Especially the bit that says no "company speak"

    John

maybe you would also like to join us .

What I would like, sensible crticism and sensible answers, and especially not slanging match there are plenty of members of this forum to have a good discussion.

This is not a criticism of anyone or of this forum. I feel we need to move forward together, if BW do not know of the problem they cannot put it right

and if we do not tell them how are they to know.

  5. Thank you Maffi and Gary

On a recent post there was a discusion on the the way BW works , is it for boaters, fishermen ,walkers etc or purely to make a profit.

What about their licence stategy "its not worth chasing licence dodgers" allegedly.

As Maffi said put all your suggestions, criticisms in one place, there are members of BW management that are on this forum and theyhave offered to answer.

Please see my first two posts in this topic

  6. If you read the heading there is an open question.

Britsh Waterways The rights and wrongs.

This is your chance to say.

On this forum is the public relations officer of British Waterways.

PUT YOUR POINTS AND WE MAY GET SOME ANSWERS and /or influence their decisions

Please bear in mind my requests I do not want a slanging match.

    See my first post

  7. My first statement is," I do not wish to step on anybodys toes", and if this topic is removed so be it.

I ask that comments that are made on this topic be truthful and not hearsay.

I also ask that replys from BW are the same and use plain english not corperate speak.

Please do not get abusive that only lets yourself down.

Please please on this topic do not go :)

Maybe if we work together something will be done.

Do not sit on the fence.

It is up to you now .

I have no comment to make besause at the moment do not own a boat.

  8. Whose job is it to check licences? Is it a special job or do all BW workers keep an eye out.

Also see my post in "Bugsworth Basin"

Something has got to be done we need each other. BW need us to help pay the wages

and we need them to carry out all the work required to maintain the system.

  9. Bottle.

Don't shoot the messenger, I have it on good authority that in this area it is considered to be not cost effective to chase unlicensed boat owners, presumably it is easier to increase the charges on the rest of us.

    John

I had no wish to shoot the messenger. Time and again I read and hear people moaning about the non payers.

I am not permantely on the cut yet but if I see a boat without a licence displayed when I am, I will have no problem with reporting it. If it is not displayed that should also be an offence as with motor vehicles. We have to be proactive, then charges will not rise so rapidly (some hope)

  10. Moorings are chargable (Oct2005) the new marina was empty we managed to turn a 50 footer narrowboat in one big circle. I believe this would be possible if the marina had been full.

We met a few boats in the narrows but it tests your skills, lots of people to talk too and if you take your time as said before it is terrific

  11. The organisers are slightly obsessed with the idea that the basins will rapidly fill up with permanent 'livaboard' moorers as soon as the stop planks are removed.

If they are worried pay for patrols maybe they could catch those who have forgotten to buy their licence and fine them for over staying on moorings.

I say this as a potential permanant cruiser. (boat in planning stage)

  12. I am not "trying to teach my grandmother how to suck eggs" but may I suggest the map is as simple as possible just symbols and numbers with a good index on the same page and all the relevant information.

I.e, on the map a symbol for a turning point and number, in the index on same page the relvant info: max boat length that can be manouvered etc.

  13. I'm planning on that trip this summer but not sure now! One thing I know is that I'll lock the dog inside!

Go for it whether the weather be fine or not it is absolutely worth it. if it's windy, it was when we went, take everything thats loose of the roof.

Try to avoid school holidays because it is so busy and just after the aquaduct towards

that town that holds the eistedford, could not spell Llangollen, the canal becomes very narrow with alternate working necessary.

Been there, done that but would definately go again.

  14. John

whilst agreeing with you I would hope and expect the BW guide to be basic i.e. water/sanitry station/self pumpout and mooring points.

The guide producers will give the extras, I would not like to see them go out of production.
