Gentlemen
I thank you for reasoned and judicous views.

John
I may well have misunderstood some of the responses but not all. I agree that 'jobs for the boys' is a bad thing also the bureaucracy.
Narrowboats are inherently safe, the same as houses, and there are building regs. etc for houses.
These are 'policed' by inspectors/surveyors so why not for boats.

Just read read that big posting . . ..
WHY is it channel 8 sub channel 8 THAT IS SO UNREALISTIC to be honest....
why not channel 8 only
Sam
Its not unrealistic but if you look at Dales post (tti) it appears that the ch8 cts8 is used by 'everyone' as a general call channel. Now this would probabley not cause problems in the 'country' but in a town/city there could be to much 'traffic' from townies and this would reduce the effectiveness for our use.
I can vouch for Dale he is the man who knows all about PMR. He helped me when I was looking to buy. Btw he uses the same name on 446user.co.uk

I think he wants to know how to stuff it, sorry re-pack it.

There may come a time better to be safe than sorry.

I do not have specific figures and as said it depends on size of tank, number of persons and if you go to the pub often.
We always hired and the pumpout would last two of us for two weeks and have room to spare but we made use of 'other facilities' whenever the need and availability coincided.
This may be of interest
http://www.compostingtoilet.org/ empty once to twice a year and also give number of person size, they have self contained units.

Having been a member of this forum for a little while now.
Would someone enlighten me as to why when; regulations, RCD etc. are mentioned they are pooh, poohed, by certain members who arrogantly think they know better.
This is not aimed at anyone in particular but, if the cap fits wear it, the attitude of "Us have always done it this way" cannot go on. Times move on. Keep up with modern thinking.
ps I put this in building and maintenance because this is where most of the problems are.
btw Harry Enfields grandad/neighbour comes to mind "You don't want to do it like that"

Volt drop is the important issue for 12v, current carrying capcity for 240v. I have just wired my boat (240v systems) with standard 1mm and 2.5 mm flex bought from screwfix, this complies with the regs for domestic applications (otherwise the would not be able to sell it?) so must surely b e OK for a boat. I cannot see why a boat would require anything different.
RCD - what a load of bo***cks!!!
This 'FLEX' is ok for domestic applications but a boat is not a 'domestic application' you will have no comeback on screwfix or the 'flex' manufacturers.

I think you will find it is illegal to record any conversation, without informing the person you are recording.

Gardencoaster first of allto the forum.
There is a previous thread on PMR in this forum, where I recomended the : tti frequency PMR 500tx, it has a good write up in their testing on 446user.com. The pmr costs about £50 but comes with earpiece, ptt mich' in line, leather case to clip to belt, lanyard to hang round neck and mains charger to charge internal lithium iron battery. Also has LED torch and FM radio to listen to radio 1/2/3/4 etc. All packed into a metal case about the size pf a credit card and about six credit cards thick. There are some photos' in the gallery.
p.s I have no connection at all with company (british).

I am sure you will do this but make sure the anchor is attached to the boat before you throw it overboard
-
Why add ballast, just remove some or move it across the boat .
Depending on where your tanks (fuel, water and waste) are they will have the greatest effect on trim, ensure no one is on board when checking.
-
K I S S: anchors are for rivers (not canalised) and the sea.

Keep your head out of the way and as for slipping off be sensible and use the windlass so it won't slip off. If it does not fit properley go and buy a new one that does.

Hi
Welcome to the forum, I agree with John, you seem to entering the boat idea from the wrong direction, boats are not the 'cheap' option they are a lifestyle.
You say you can afford something 'grotty' thats the best place to start, you do not say how old you are, buy it cheap as possible, renovate it and sell it dear.
Keep doing this and then in a few years if you still like the idea go for the boat.
To experience 'boating' hire at the beginning or end of season, cheaper and probably the most inclement weather, if you enjoy that you may wel be on your way to becoming boaters.
After all that I hope you do become true boaters for the love of the waterways.
Good luck

Yah big softie, I totaly understand your feelings and would do anything for our dog as well.
He is twelve going on six months, does not know he has heart problems, so carries on regardless just gets out of puff a bit quicker.
Best regards to you and your dog.

I don't like speeders or dawdlers (fence)
I came up behind a private boat that was single handed ( I found this out later) he kept disappearing down below, the boat was moving, I slowed as much as possible even going into neutral on numerous occasions. After a while I got a little tired of this and tooted, just to catch his attention, and indicated that I wished to pass. No response. He carried on just the same. So I closed the gap. The other half went up to the bow to talk to him, I got that close, and he was cooking a meal. Well we did eventually get past and pleasantries were exchanged.

Hi
Does any one have any knowledge of 3m(company) new 'Thinsulate' I have been to there sight. Just wondering on your thoughts. Allegedly Sound proofing and thermal insulation in one?
-
John
The 'system' is PMR (personal mobile radio), the wave band is 446 all the rest are
models and makes.
Most 'radio' have 8 channels with 38 CTC (side channels) for each of them.
This is a 'new' system for the whole of the europe and they do not require a licence.
These are not the old CB radios
-
Sam I would not update unless you really need to.
I have posted three images in the gallery. These are the ones i use.
The spec is the same (virtually) for all 446 radios but some work better than others.
These ones also have an FM radio (radio 1 etc) and an LED torch inbuilt. They come with
the case shown (real leather), a lanyard, earpiece with push to talk (ptt) button and mains charger. The rechargable battery is lithium/iron.
They are imported by TTI model no. PMR500tx one of there chaps is a member of the 446users forum.

Simple safe way:
Different voltage, different trunking. All trunking marked with voltage, regularly spaced along its length.
You may not be there when someone has to work on it and they will probably thank you for being so efficient.
-
Sam
They are not the same. These work on a different band (446) go to the link given before there is a forum. They are only to glad to give advice and you can see reports on the radios as well. Also some manufacturers/suppliers are on line.
