I was wondering if many folk have experience of cruising the mon brec canal. I am looking to move to the area and wonder if my 'standard' 57ft narrowboat would fair on the rather shallow canal - 3ft draft i believe.
As I understand things boats there tend to have a v shaped hull to make mooring easier and the bridges are quite low.
any comments?
thanks

paul c a bws padlock is the lock you key fits, crt key? british waterways
ginjer have done so - cheers

I bought an inland waterways map to give me a better perspective. moving my boat from aldermaston seems logical to go to Bristol then over to Newport. no I would not attempt this by myself, as I said about a pilot. otherwise it looks like a round trip to Coventry then Gloucester but then again as nikvah posted it may make sense to lift the boat at Bristol then over the bridge

Where can I get a bws padlock from?
Glad I checked the auto spell as it said bed padlock ha ha!
-
ot sure if this should be a separate topic but moving my boat from k&a cross the severn to newport then crane into the Mon n need.
Anyone done this? Know you Need a pilot

Thanks for the input I for sure will do a few trial runsThe nearest and quickest commute to Madley is the Mon and Brec at Abergavenny and would take about 30 mins. Research Goitre wharf and points nearby.
If you approached Hereford from Worcs/Ledbury side you'd spend all day gridlocked in the overdeveloped town trying to cross the bridge to south of the county. Upton on Severn, Tewksbury and Glo'ster are all about an hour (+/-) away, and connected to the canal network.
Abergavenny is a great little town and Madley a thriving village, as an old son of the Shire I hope you find it there.
Nice one

There are a few marinas on the Brecon, but I am not sure whether there are many residential moorings. Most are quite rural.
You have realised that it isn't linked to the main system, haven't you?
yes, if the job works out i'll get it moved by road
Very lovely shallow canal. Shorter boats are preferable.
mines 57ft, have you cruised this one? i'd need a residential mooring in a marina so will have to do my homework
-
I would think so. Probably about 25 miles from either Goytre or Govilon and it's mostly trunk roads. You might get stuck behind a tractor or a lorry load of sheep but there shouldn't be any congestion.
Just the trouble of craning your boat out and transporting it over there. Craning in at Goytre Wharf is a routine thing I believe.
And once you are there you are stuck there so it comes down to whether that's OK for you.
JP
have you cruised this stretch? there are secure marinas I guess

Hereford & Gloucester canal in Hereford but frankly that's not a lot of use since it's a detached portion of a closed canal under renovation.
I suspect that either Gloucester or Worcester are nearest. Horrible drive on poor roads through lovely countryside. Don't know the village itself but it's generally a nice part of the world if a little detached from civilisation.
JP
Technically the Mon & Brec may be closer. Another detached canal though. But at least one with water.
cheers JP, just had a look on the map and Monmouthshire through the Brecon looks doable maybe?

Hi all, looking at taking a job on in madley and was wondering what the nearest canal is and what is the area like

I lost my chimney in the exact same place, just up past Aldermaston.

Seems no one is listening Dave.

was going down stream on the k&a just past ABC boat hire at aldermaston, the lock i was in is does not have much of a fall.
with just the port gate open, (my fire is situated on the port side near the bow) i was looking over the starboard side so as not to clout the gate then looked up to see the walkway on the lock gate very gracefully remove my chimney and deposit it in the lock. being stainless and i guess none magnetic stainless half hour with a sea search didn't recover it.
so note to oneself ALWAYS take down the chimney when navigating!
anyone got a spare??
-
quick question, a battery left uncharged for about a week or so measures 13.02v - good or bad?
-
went to woolhampton from aldermaston sat, there was 2 boats moored outside the rowbarge. one gate had a broken top hinge from a craft hitting it to hard. It was a hire boat with a load of drunken adults with a 15 year old navigating. They went through the lock (the door still sealed at that point), winded then came down stream through the lock. they were luck the gate didn't fall on them.
Interesting note tho, a 67 ft boat cannot wind outside the rowbarge but a 60ft can

nice one, I've dropped him an emailI would think you would be better off speaking to Stuart Mills, he is the property director for C&RT.

interesting article. reminds me of the chap in a narrowboat who cut a channel off the cut moored his boat then back filled just to avoid river license! It was well bizarre when we cruise past it
-
I know someone who did just that, he bought 15acres of land, put a barn up and lived in it. now he has a full right to be there. lovely chap, lives in a time warp bit like jack hargreves from out of town (Hampshire people will know who I mean)
-
sorry it is on the off side, we had some piling work done recently and has resulted in a strip of 'no mans land' becoming available. just wanted to find out if I could lease / buy it
-
Hi Does anyone know who to contact regarding purchasing a strip of towpath?
Its on the K&A.
cheers
