  1. Can't wait until June 22 now, just got to hope for decent weather. :-) Thanks to all for your excellent advice. Oh, BTW I saw the Llangollen on the telly earlier - that one is definitely on our list next then we'll get to the rest... Regards, Andrew.
  2. I used to live in Camberley before taking a break in France for ten years so I know the Basingstoke canal quite well. OK, job done, I booked with College Cruisers they did me a good deal charging me for two of the three dogs. It is a short break taster of four nights so we won't get far. Maybe Banbury and back. They have some information sheets for customers who are new to the canal so we should hopefully make best use of our time. On another note: I used to do lots of miles in a boat that did one mile to the gallon so I wonder how many mpg/gph I can expect out of a canal cruiser at 3 knots?
  3. Wow, thanks for so many replies guys! OK, the trip will be around her birthday (20th June) so hopefully misses school holidays. We live in Kent, so the South Oxford sounds convenient and like bigste said, there's always next time for the Shroppy, Llangollen and all the rest on other trips. :-) Now all I need to do is find somebody who will hire us and out three Jack Russell Terriers a boat! Any more advice would be appreciated!
  4. Hi Everybody, first post on this forum. My wife and I are experienced boaters, having been River Thames based for many years before selling the river boat that I built when we moved our cruising grounds to the south coast of England and the north coast of France. I sold our boat some time back but now my wife and I would like to hire a narrowboat and take a weeks cruise for her 60th birthday. Can the community suggest a really beautiful canal where we can hire a boat for a week please? On balance, I would say we prefer countryside to cities, but a reasonable amount of 'brick beauty' is also good too. The location of the canal is not super-important, but for what it is worth, we live in the south. Thanks for any suggestions given! Andrew.
