  1. never argue with a fu@kwit.they will drag you down to thier level then beat you with experience............:-)

  3. reason for failure????? was it the inverter or charger that crapped out????? was it being pushed beyond its capabilities? because if you are asking me to believe a low frequencey inverter cant handle what a (cheap) high frequency mastervolt can handle then I rather suspect buisiness interests to be at stake (bullshit) .I dont do the blacks realy white game chap.its boring and holds up progress.......
  4. and if you want to make it look nice on the inside, use a 9" brass porthole as a collar, again about £30ish off fleabay.looks great against the stainless twin wall flue :-)
  5. at last...i knew we would get there!thanks kieth! at last a voice of reason based on experience. ....do you know why the outbacks failed chap? I like to hear all sides before making an informed decision.
  6. you get a "lead slate" its actually tin or ally with the cut to size rubber seal and sticky bitumin mastic sealant around the edge.goes on the same as it would a dwelling, simples. about £30ish off ebay.its what ive got for my 200mm flue.ttrust me, im a roofer:-)
  7. the u.s.a has been bankrupt since 1971....hasnt stopped them......all the mastervolt inverters appear to be high frequency inverters like all the cheap ones, dont work anywhere near their quotted rating, can only overload for a split second and are not so keen on inductive loads....great design, not.have you seen their prices? truly terrifying.......rip off......
  8. will do chap.and the outback fm80 mppt solar charge controller.the victron mppt is manufactured by someone else and rebranded aswell.........:-)
  9. great! I wouldnt buy an indian car, sure as hell wouldnt trust something with the ability to go up in flames in my boat...certainly not one I was asking to handle inductive loads.........plenty of outbacks are sold new, none for sale secondhand......mmmm let me see.......I think that says everything...canadian xantrex have a great rep too, victron and mastervolt dont.....I was going to go victron but after so, so much research and sifting through the b.s I have now definately made up my own mind.
  10. I am sure they do, it doesnt stop them from being unreliable does it? governments are well known for making great choices arnt they?...................................... rolex make shit watches that loose time everyday and £5 quartz digi watches from a service station dont...................I have also read the glossy victron ads.......and wondered why they are ALWAYS for sale secondhand.......usually broken........
  11. outback make inverters for the marine enviroment aswell as off grid setups.I know what you mean about the looks but I could care less about the asthetics, its weather the thing burns my f#@$ g boat out with me or mine in it that is of the most importance.function over form!
  12. I wont have a shore line, dont want to spend money on fuel generating electric unless I have to,* 24vdc kubota eb300 geny)my cooker hood fan, solar hot water controler, fridge, tv, huge stereo, washing machine, tumble dryer and cooker (summer only) are all 230v.everything else is 24v because it is better than 12v, full stop.I want the place to function as a house.you turn something on, it works....if I could fit more panels on, I f $#@*g would.I dont want to be continualy butt raped by energy companies if I can supply most of my own electric, myself.I will use lots of electric, because I can.....so back to the original point has anyone else got an outback inverter and if so are they as "stone axe" reliable as everyone worth listening to are saying or is it just coincidence?
  13. obviously havnt done the sums then.....mmmm that same maths that designed your hull and worked out prop size is of no use in electrics then? silly me......I shall build a 70's boat then......
  14. mmmmm.when someone says they dont need research anything I rather fancey they should be ignored instantly. ....ive been a roofer 27 years and still learn new things all the time............do you have the capacity to learn new things? doesnt sound like it........
  15. why? ive got 1000ah 24v traction batteries, 2000 solar panels and the most economical undercounter 126 litre fridge freezer I could find (klarstein, £180,112kw a year at 230...do the sums and then compare with the best 12v ones of only 40 litres...) even with inverter draw its as good, if not better and at 126 litres.......this 2015, not 1975, 12volts demise is on its way and whats the point of running copper CABLES so enormous you have doubled the cost of your electrics to make them.... inefficient.....its goes against my design brief and logic....
  16. do some research chap................spend a day on the phone talking to people who install solar/off grid installations worldwide and see what vast knowledge they have of inverter reliability when used 24/7 365 days a year as mine will be.talk to people in the marine industry who specialise in electrical generation (40yrs experience) and electrical installation and see what they say...or alternatively semi conciously digest the glossey ads and then go and spend say, £550 on a mastervolt alternator...or do some research and buy the same identical bosch one (who make it...) for....eerrrrr.. £120.......
  17. mastervolt and indian made victron both repackage other peoples stuff and inflate the price x3....they both have rotten reliability records and a fire on my boat caused by a crap quality, bargain priced OR overpriced BRANDED indian/chinese/taiwanese inverter whilst my children/grandchildren are on board.........
  18. sounds great! sadly my experience of all things chinese mechanical and electrical is of quality so dismal, so shamefully woefull I have made a concious decision not to waste another penny on fantasticly priced, eeeerm junk....7 different people in the marine/electrical generation/solar industry, not one of them able to/or trying to sell me one, with a wealth of experience and knowledge have ALL said the same thing."outback, dont waste your money on anything else".......I have never seen an outback inverter for sale secondhand in 12 months+ of searching (victrons always for sale, usually broken.....) and with d.I.y fixing capabilites (inards on ebay), american made (quality control) + 5 years warranty........its ticking all the right reliability/safety boxes for me.anyone else use one?
  19. hi folks, its time to start the electrics on my new build and I have to buy an inverter. does anyone here use an outback inverter? without exception, everyone I have spoken too has recommended one and I would like to hear from forum members expierence of using one continuously 24/7 and are they as reliable as I am lead to believe? thanks
  20. hi folks.i need to sort out the water tank on my new build and have been told I need potable water paint.any suggestions/recomendations would be most helpfull.thanks:-)
  21. thanks ditchcrawler, I think I may have similar distribution problems with this.I think I will get the floor down in the front but not bother in the rear until its on the water.
  22. reclaimed, oiled douglas fir 125mm boards on the floor....(floor,cieling, sides and far more attractive and cheaper than faced ply!!!)I dont want to take it up so I suppose I wont have to put it down in the back third of the boat until its on the water...
  23. words of wisdom mr brown...you have just confirmed what I have thought for some while..nobody has realy got an answer, I am just going to have to get on the water and see what happens....bugger
  24. the boat has a draught of 22" and has roughly the same displacement at 55x10.6" as a 72ft narrowboat which is where I am led to believe the "standard" of 1 ton of ballast drops the boat 1" in the water.(?)is derived from. it currently has 2, 671.2kgs of ballast and i have 5 bays in the bilge left empty at the stern to which another 954kgs can be added.do I need to ballast or do I leave out...???
  25. hi folks, newbee here.I am building a 55x10.6" widebeam on hardstanding, not in the water and wonder if anyone could answer aquestion I have regarding ballast.I have just ordered my traction battery (600kg) and also have the wieght of 2 diesel generators, calorifier and possibly 2 full calor gas bottles all located in/above the engine room.this little lot could quite possibly wiegh close to a ton...do I leave out the equivelent in ballast from the rear of the boat or shall I just not bother as some have suggested saying"a ton wont make a difference on a boat that large"..I rather fancey it will.any suggestions? I realy, realy dont want to take up my reclaimed floor to alter ballast when I am on the water...thanks, westwealer.
