  1. Thanks, I will have another go this morning with the warning light in circuit and engine running OK found the problem the D+ cable was earthing when it was going through a bulkhead. Replaced the cable and all is good. Thanks everyone for your help.

  3. OK I've fitted replacement alternator, connected B+ to leisure battery positive and alternator body to battery negative. I was expecting the battery voltage to appear on the D+ terminal?
  4. Thank you for this, it is good to know.
  5. Thanks for this, I can see the similarity however I found somebody on ebay who has positively identified it as being a 'Lucas LRA02861'. I have gone ahead and ordered ... we shall see ... it was not too expensive. I tried local car parts outlets and they can't get this alternator. Apparently it was on the Ford Transit 2001-06 2.3 petrol. https://www.ebay.co.uk/str/rotatingmachinesltd?
  6. The lamp was the one that was fitted originally and I have assumed it was a charging LED, i can measure the resistance. The engine alternator seems to charge without an excitation lamp.
  7. The measured voltage of the batteries with the engine running or not does not change and charging light I fitted to stays illuminated. I'll take the alternator into Euro Car Parts and see if they can help.
  8. My domestic alternator has stopped charging and the duff alternator has no ID, see pics. I'm at a bit of a loss to how I find a direct replacement. Are 'car' alternators interchangeable? I'm hoping to have a self-sensing replacement.
  9. Thanks for this, the second one is just the sort of thing, I think it will make a good Christmas present. Already ordered!! Cheers! "This colourful new edition of the Bristol Channel and Severn Cruising Guide is based on Peter Cumberlidge's popular classic originally published by Stanford Maritime. This new book contains all the latest information on Bristol Channel and Severn marinas, harbours and anchorages. From Milford Haven up to Lydney on the north shore and from Sharpness down to St Ives on the south shore. The pilotage is clearly charted in Imray's user-friendly style and lavish photography conveys the full atmosphere of this magnificent unspoilt cruising area. Peter Cumberlidge has included a fascinating sequence of features on the maritime history of these waters and suggests many places of interest to visit ashore. This new edition also covers the glorious inland Severn beyond Sharpness up to Gloucester, Tewkesbury, Worcester and Stourport.
  10. This was the one I was remembering, many thanks
  11. I want to buy a book as a present that involves navigating a narrowboat (ideally) on the Severn. I have a vague memory of an account of a wide beam doing it but it may have been the Wye!
  12. I'm expecting Richard back tomorrow to refit the skimmed head, fingers and toes are crossed🤞
  13. I think I need to find someone who can photograph their existing oven. I've tried every arrangement I can think of, none of them seem to work. It is going to be counter-intuitive, I just know it ...
  14. I have a Flavel cooker and for the life of me I can't remember where the two loose metal clips in the photo go?
  15. I know it's inelegant but I think I would prefer a big cable tie that is wrapped around both end caps, squashing them on to the cooler.
  16. Not yet, Richard has taken the head away, I think he is going to have it skimmed. There is some welding needed on the dual alternator bracket.
  17. Richard has been on-site. He found a mixture of problems and confirmed that the head gasket was shot, obvious once the head was off. Also one of the tappets had deconstructed itself and was causing a problem with the free running of the governer rail. I don't think I could have sorted this one on my own.
  18. I've not disappeared but awaiting a visit from Richard. Also he has found me a replacement spring for my injector fuel pump. Normal overheating topic to be resumed Tuesday when Richard is onsite
  19. I did wonder about trying to find a replacement spring, do you have one?
  20. I discovered that I need a new pump. The spring has broken in two places. I am hoping this will explain why the engine went down hill so quickly and refuses to restart. The pump is one from Delphi.
  21. Thanks, There is a (mounting/base) plate sandwiched between the pump and the block. I imagine the Lister manual is expecting this to come off to aid the refitting of the head. Is that correct? I need to have a closer look but I could not see how it is fastened. I also need to check whether I have a gasket in the decoke pack for it.
  22. Thanks, I don't follow what you mean by "water pump seized into crank" and do you mean the oil seal on the governor cover that goes over the end of the crank shaft or the main seal on the crank shaft?
  23. Ok I removed water pump, injector plumbing, manifolds, exhaust, covers, rockers and push rods but did not have an extra deep socket for the head studs and have had to order one. The stud nuts are too tight for my spanner. To my untrained eye the rockers look pristine and the push rods roll evenly so I'm hoping they are good.
  24. Hi Richard, if you can make it to the GUC Slough Arm I would really appreciate your help. I'll email you my email address and phone number. I'm going to have another go with my troublesome alpha in the morning. Remove the exhaust manifold to get at the injection pumps, to soak them clean and if it goes well then maybe see if I can remove the head. This is all a bit scary but the forum has given me some confidence about the pitfalls and the people I can call upon if it all goes belly-up. Thanks, Simon
  25. I found this on Wiki, sounds much the same to me, draining out the oil, "Used hydraulic lifters should be drained of oil before installation, to prevent them from holding open the valves on startup and potentially causing damage to the valve-train/pistons. This is easily accomplished by compressing them in a vice. Oil pressure will build quickly upon startup and they will set themselves to the proper height."
