  1. The only thing to do with leaky mushrooms is remove, dress the rust, paint, re-seal and re-install also putting some seal on the screw threads to seal those too, but the seal looks ok with no rust tails on the seal/roof edge, This may be that the seal was only put on the outside edge of the mushroom and not on the inside/hole edge hence no rust on the roof with the water escaping to the inside/hole edge. It may just be the water slowly leaking through the screws due to water build up in the hole recess and the only way it can go is to the inside. Try removing the screws to see if their rusty? If so re-screw with sealent on the screws and threads to form a seal here too.

I get water coming in sometimes when it is heavy rain hitting the roof at an angle and all I can put it down too is the rain bouncing up from the roof and getting caught by the underneath of the mushroom. and then dripping on the inside.

I would agree. I refitted my 4 on my boat a year ago. Admitted, Dreadlocks is 17 tears old and the rust had expanded the joint and snapped the heads off most of the screws!

  2. Hi,

We visited Pewsey Wharfe on Sunday.

Wow! much improved. New (fairly straight) armco piling, new mooring rings, neat and tidy. Deep enough too! (unlike some VM's on the K & A ). a joy to visit, unlike last time. Now if they could just move the Pump Out....

The question is whether CRT would use short term/visitor mooring fees as extra income (over & above other sources of revenue from boaters) or keep it cost neutral. If they kept it cost neutral then your usage pattern (and many others') may well mean you'd pay less.

It comes down to cost effective collection of small fees. I suspect the infrastructure is simply not there for 99% of visitor moorings. Whether technology could help or not is another debate. Also part of the committment to receiving certain funding streams which have paid for towpath improvements is that access to walkers/cyclists remains free.

I was mostly joking, however I do think vm's on crt controlled waters should stay free. Maybe a compromise woild be a small number of (extra) chargeable moorings with hookups and water? or maybe that's a daft idea.

  4. So, breasting up ok if invited? Personally I have no objection to others Breasting up to me (if i get there first) if necessary and not blocking the waterway for other users. Shouldn't this be encouraged at an event like this? In fact it might be friendly and best to hang out an invitation, it is a very community minded festival. Bagging a public mooring just for self dosen't seem very friendly. Oh and how early is early? I understand that 48/24hr limits do not appy arround this time. Below the bridge appear to be 14 day moorings anyway. Is 10 days before too late?.

Marina moorings? great facilities but personally rather be out on the cut.

  5. Love to visit by boat next year, very busy nearby on the cut, but not many breasting up. In the event, what is local protocol? Breast up and ask later, Hang arround for a moorer to appear and ask nicely or ? do normal rules apply whatever they are, provided there is enough width?

  6. Really ALL VMs should be charged for as they are on other navigations.

Problem is cheapskate whinging boaters not willing to put their hands in their pockets.

    First night free

    Second night £6

Third night and beyond £20 a night.

The charge has to be as high as £20 to make it uneconomical to use a VM as your "home base".

There are still many miles of towpath available for 14day stays.

As for is there a need, yes there is, CRT need cash to get on with repairs and dredging, the canals round here are in a worse state than they were 20+ years ago and getting worse.

I pay enough thanks! Marina fees, Licence, Pump outs. We arn't all as rich as some. I resent being called a cheepskate, I'm just carefull! Are vm's on other waterways privately owned (for profit) or managed by a trust?

Surprised you don't suggest a toll for cyclists (who pay nowt). That could raise a fortune and pay for improvements to all those miles of cycleway towpath! Whilst we are at it, lets start charging dog owners who use the towpath. How about a charge based on the length of dog? Shih tzu would be cheaper than Dachshund - Serves them right for having a luxury narrow-dog. Lets suggest that and see how many people are 'whingers' then! WHINGE OVER.

Sorry, couldn't help rising to the bait.

  7. If you have a bike, stop at Great Bedwyn and explore Savernake Forest. There is also a good baker (Bedwyn) there too! the Avon is beautiful, and Bristol is amazing. The lock keeper at Netham is really helpful. When you pass through Devizes, seek out The Vaults for some really interesting beers.

Pultney bridge moorings are closed untill further notice afaik. There is usually quite a bit of space for mooring in Bath though.

  8. Hi

Our boat is extensively fitted out with veneered mdf. Some serious deterioration around a couple of (mdf) porthole liners and one Houdini hatche. The rear hatch/engine room area is a bit the worse for wear, but considering the soakings it gets, is pretty good for 17 years old. Another coat of varnish and ok for another year or two.

  9. Last time we cruised down to BoA from Devizes there were a LOT of moored boats, I haven't got the foggiest idea how often they move. A lot of the way is tickover only. So far we have never had a problem mooring in that direction. If visiting and stuck for a mooring, I would like to think that those who don't move very much would welcome breasting up.

  10. Just started swapping over to odourlos myself (last weekend). I gave the tank a good pump out flushed well and added odourlos. We will be away in a couple of weeks so I hope it works!

I will be using ecover or somthing similar to clean the loo, as I guess that will work with oudourlos not against it.

We have on occasion had a few savory wiffs with blue.

  11. Hi, Thanks for the swift replies. The water seems to accumulate over a long period, not necisarily when the boat is in use. I've only noticed the water pump give a burp every couple of hours when it is on. The water is fairly clear/slightly rusty I think it might be rain from somewhere but it seems a lot from a couple of leaky portholes. The area where it accumulates is a little scaley but not too bad. I was worying about places I can't get too where the water may pass through on its way back - wetness under the slabs under the floor for insance. I can't get to them so i am probably wasting my time worrying.

Next job - remove the Portholes and re-seal!

    Thanks

  12. Just bailed out about 4 gallons from my cabin bilge (about 4 washing-up bowls worth). It's the first time in a few months the floor hatch has been up. Could this quantity get in through slightly leaky portholes? We have had a lot of rain Also, am I going to rust out from the inside (the boat not me! I gave up Scrumpy) the bilge has never been totally dry in the two years we have owned it and we have paving slabs for balast. Bit worried...

  13. Hi All

I am planning a trip to Bristol (floating) harbour late May bank holiday weekend (river levels permitting). We plan to stay for one or two nights, as close to the Colsten Hall as we can (Concert). Does anyone know if we are likely to be able to find a place? or is it possible to book in advance? i think it is half term for Schools. I see that we will have to pay fees. We are 60ft long.

    Thanks for any advice

    Pat
