  1. Possibly people who love canals but may be old/infirm/ find locks etc too challenging physically? :-)
  2. ....and they may sell separately?? It'll surely tempt someone to have a go!!:-)
  3. Hello Quaysider, Why not contact the broker for these http://www.apolloduck.co.uk/feature.phtml?id=296336 The owners will doubtless have told them insurance costs and turnover, if it's anything like the land based hotel trade. The latter figure may only be released if you become a "serious" buyer however! Cheers Sas :-)

  5. That's good advice.....beach casting can be really exciting compared with canal fishing (what I remember of it!) Have a go DH!
  6. It's also useful to employ small children to dig for said bait ( usually rag or lug), when you are not asking them to skin rabbits or clean trout or sweep chimneys, as my dad used to do. (Sandcastles???? Pah!!!) Well maybe not the chimneys bit but everything else!!!!!! A day out fishing in Arnside or Greenodd......oh happy days :-)))
  7. THANKS Paul! Sadly, without the 'real life' we wouldn't be able to buy a boat !!! Cheers Sas. :-)
  8. Firstly can I just apologise for responding to some advice whilst appearing to ignore the rest??? Sadly I ve had to work in between :-\ However, I've just read through the thread and whilst some advice may not apply to the situation I'm planning, it has been a fascinating read and I'm very grateful for everyone taking the time. thanks :-) I'll let you know how it goes.....when I've tried it....EEK! :-)
  9. Thanks for the offer Bob, but I've already had a great deal of help from Cosmic of this Parish. Still can't believe the kindness of some of the members on here....wonderful! Sas :-)
  10. Tony, I can't thank you enough for your comprehensive and really informative report....so have a greenie for a start!!!!! :-) If you can possibly PM any pics I'd be grateful, as I'd rather play my plans close to my chest for the moment? If we come down to view, please let us know your favourite watering hole in the vicinity and we'll leave you a pint and a pickled egg behind the bar. Thanks again for your kindness :-) Sas
  11. Morning Just wondered if anyone would be willing to have a quick look at boat for sale on the Marina, prior to us making the trek down from the North please? Reason I'm asking is that last time we journeyed South on a similar mission ( not to this marina) we found the boats had either been substituted with their ugly sister counterparts or the pictures had been expertly enhanced with Photoshop!!!!! It was a complete waste of money. Just need to know whether or not this is a similar case? Thanks Sas :-)
  12. OMG Julian!!!! Did they live to tell the tale?!!! Sound advice, cheers! :-)
  13. Thanks Neil2, that's really helpful! :-) BTW.....does the Tuesday Night Club still exist? I've read a little bit about it ages ago, but it sounded great! Sas :-)
  14. [quote If it's a tidal loch Thanks George but it's not.... Some people find it less exciting to tie up at a jetty. Me too! However, that's where it'll probably be for much of the time it's there. :-(
  15. Hell fire Laurence, I hope our destination won't present such extreme conditions as those, but I take your point! In short....we would be tied to a jetty, The water levels do rise in winter, so we would have to adjust the ropes AND possibly anchor off the jetty if the levels rise above the jetty posts....still having palpitations re exhaust and trad stern tho! Sadly there are at least 2 " quality GRPs" for sale where we are going, and they've been so for at least 2 years, so the idea of buying and selling one here isn't really viable :-(
  16. Thanks MP, I suspected someone might have a nb on the Irish system.....was hoping someone in that position might see the post, but lots of thought provoking stuff here. Trouble is....if we can't put it on lake/loch temporarily, it may affect our ( other) business as we'll need access there.....:-( Sorry Richard.....Alan's hypothetical scenario is a good one.....
  17. Budget depends on the quality of the boat! Not looking to get something on the cheap, just something with a decent hull and a bit of life in it!
  18. Hi Paul We would be sleeping on board occasionally, in all weathers so warmth/comfort key. The GRP boats we looked at were damp....and not comfortable at all. Yes I know we could just have been unlucky, but a steel narrowboat has been on the radar for 20 years! However, the most important reason is that it would be a temporary mooring 12 to 18 months say, prior to being moved to the canal system permanently. :-)
  19. Sorry for delay Richard.....real life getting in the way :-\ It would be craned in :-) Sorry...probably better question but we've been down the GRP route and discounted it....
  20. Cheers Mike, Rushed or not, sound advice. Happy boiler mending!!!:-))
  21. Hi Paul Thanks for the advice on anchoring. Just bit concerned about choice of stern in case water level rises ....it does...sometimes floods :-( Would love trad stern but have visions of water whooshing over it and down into boat??!!! Eek!
