  1. cheers liam, had planned to do so. i've checked out the website but couldn't find anything to do with mooring. any more suggestions are welcome as i've already got more ideas than i did earlier
  2. cheers bottle, alvechurch is not far from me (didn't think of looking there as i thought they were just a hire base) any ideas of prices on a 36 footer?
  3. has anybody got a canoe? if so working back from ithlingborough lock would make sure theres no hiding place for them and you wouldn't look out of place. could also get a close look to positively identify it. just a thought................
  4. also i've heard that if you take up a winter mooring you are more likely to get a longterm mooring as you are already on the system and paying your way rather than being a name on a waiting list. anyone know if theres any truth in this?
  5. cheers, i'm definately going to take the winter mooring they've offered me in kinver. i'm just hoping i can get something permenent before i have to move it or my summer is going to be spent moving it in a big circle round brum every 2 weeks. i'll post some piccys as soon as i've collected it. don't expect anything fancy though as its 30 years old!
  6. i've been looking at narrowboats for a while now with a view to buying a 2nd hand one. i've found one i like after seeing many (good and bad) but have spent the last 2 weeks looking unsucessfully looking for a non residential mooring. i've been in touch with BW but all they can offer me at the moment is a winter mooring until march. i've tried all the marinas i can find via internet, phone book etc. with no luck. so........anybody know of any moorings available within 45 mins drive of halesowen (south west of birmingham) towpath or marina is fine. any help would be VERY much appreciated!

  8. cheers everyone! i'll definately be paying a 2nd visit to see if i can see any major corrosion on the inside of the hull before getting a survey done. the boat i'm considering has a steel hull and wooden top overlaid with grp. i've read somewhere on here that this configuration is prone to leaks where they join together so i'll be looking at that as well. any other points anyone can give me on this type of boat would be appreciated as i've already learnt plenty! once again cheers
  9. thanks for the replies, some very useful advice there which has put me at ease. the only other thing that concerned me was a couple of inches of "bilge water" (i think thats right ) in the engine bay under the rear deck. the seller explained to me that the design of the boat meant that any rainwater etc: collected in a channel that ran from the front to the back along the inside of the hull and collected there to be pumped out with a bilge pump. is this normal or should i be more worried about this?
  10. hi everyone, i'm new on here and am looking for some advice / hints. i've recently been to have a look at a narrowboat. its at the cheaper end of the market and was built in 1978. i work as a car mechanic and checked the engine over and am pleased with what i saw and having a good, long look over the boat couldn't see any real problems other than cosmetic ones. the seller seemed very genuine and honest pointing out any problems and answering any questions i had fully. however knowing nothing about boats i have said i will meet the asking price as long as it is surveyed first (at my expense) what sort of hull thickness should i consider as acceptable with a view to keeping the boat for around 4/5 years without needing expensive hull repairs? also are there any other points i havn't thought of? thanks in advance for any replies or advice
