That is what the CRT (BW) barriers use, but now the towpaths have been surfaced for cycling, the barriers have been left open as they slow the cyclists down. Of course that is ignoring the reason for installing them in the first place, so nothing to stop motor cycles anymore.
Exactly right and Facebook posters are reporting more and more motorcycles on towpaths .

With the new paths to Sustrans standard bikes are now stealth machines

BW were very concerned about motorcycle usage of the towpaths back in 2006 and published a document outlining options.
Basically - the requirement to leave the towpath accessible to disability 'buggies' makes it very difficult to restrict motorcycles.

CRT need to consider the negative aspect of partnering with Sustrans which can drive families away from the towpath and is losing moorings for boaters .Also the rise of Motorbikes on the Towpath which will increase due to removal of the "barriers"

May be the Government can invent "OFCAN" to regulate the canal operators.....
I think we need ofgov first

it must be interesting at the top of locks when lots of boats turn up not knowing about closure as the long term moorings take up all space ok some will go on water point .What a pity there is no winding hole as the farmer would have allowed one to be put in if he could have permission to moor boats against his field .A case of a much needed amenity and some more income but rejected out of hand.

When the CRT workman is good he is very good but when they are managed something seems to go very wrong.

Following 2 pump failures as the first pump wasn’t repaired in time to stop the second standby impacting - sound familiar?..
Old technology was wind driven water pumps think Norfolk and the fens .New technology should surely be able to improve on them and not have to rely on electricity.

Spoke to some Volockies at Bugsworth yesterday and they where uninformed about Bosley locks yet boaters leaving Bugsworth have to go that way whilst Marple flight is closed.Surely CRT could have a FB site for Vollockies and use it to keep them informed !

Are you talking about "Long Pound" (between locks 1 and 2)? How low was the water? That is a deep pound and it was never an issue under BW control. But maybe the issue is that CaRT prefer to spend our money on non-navigational infrastructure?
Long pound was very low in May when i came through.

The wonders of canalplan, and a spreadsheet log, to keep track of costs and travel - it lets me know the most locks in a day ive done is 43, 1.6 litres per hour fuel, and any other nerdy things i want to know haha!
The previous owners only put on about 100 hours a year for the past 6/7 years (not using it was reason for sale), ive done about 220 in a month, so at least the boats actually getting used as a boat!
but are you exploring the places or just travelling everyday .I know people who did the system in quick order and then lost interest because the wall map was full of highlighter

I'm not sure that filling the storage with canal water is an efficient use of the facility?
Obviously its a negligible amount. Not a lot different to cassettes being washed out

Drat, I thought this was going to be a Marvin Gaye tribute topic.
Can't speak for the G.U., but on out South Oxford patch, they didn't cut the verges until June, which is much later than usual. Perhaps CART are reducing the number of cuts per year.
you must have missed the February cut

Hopefully the upper level Peak Forest and Macclesfield will improve after the Bosley locks rectification work that starts next week. The Whaley Bridge transhipment water feed from reservoir is low and slow but still flowing in.
-
Presently moored at Whaley Bridge just been and checked water flow through Transhipment warehouse .Flowing but slower than usual and definitely lower level above the Doombar. However Marple is closed and the Bosley closures next week should allow levels to increase on the top level

so vollokies on then stay on board easy peasy lemon squeezy

It's good that they inspect their length regularly - but will they report water level problems, breaches and so on as well as jotting down the index numbers of non-payers? They certainly should be made to do so.
As i say Blinkered yet they could be exactly whats needed however how many managers want to be informed of their failings .

It’s not that they can’t do anything quickly enough it’s that everything is reactive with no proactive management ie lengthsmen with eyes and ears on the ground - apparently (towpath gossip) the landowner around the middlewich has been telling local CRT in writing for the past 5 years that the breach was likely due to wildlife habits and is now going to sue, seeing yet more of our licence money lost (if true)
If this situation was repeated in any truly commercial entity contingency plans would be in place for weather/vandalism/damage etc such that the effect on stakeholders is minimised this never seems to be the case here as there aren’t enough knowledgeable feet on the ground except of course the CEO who thinks 1.5 days a week in the office is enough to do his job (his words) and seems to manage to get his face in every photo opportunity going.
Rant over - I’m not sure these days of “social media” really help us all - last time it was this hot 76 I was boating and life WAS better......or is my memory clouded with old age and wine - thanks again Tesco’s for the wine reservoir which is always at least half full
They may not have lengthsmen but the canal is covered by Blinkered enforcement officers i believe every fortnight.

I am not concerned about the BSC that was as an example but the fact that too many buyers are going into boating with eyes closed .They seem to give no thought to boats and boating. All money is spent on purchase with nothing left over for problems.

Just seen another one on facebook spent all money on a boat and find lots needed to put boat right .This time a valid BSC but seems that past owner has left electrics in a dangerous state so new owner been told lots of rectification work required to pass BSC.
I think this seems iffy from lots of angles
More and more young people are falling in this spiders web .

The CRT updates page reports that they're hoping for the repair to be completed by the end of the year, with work scheduled to start mid-July.
Seems a bit optimistic but it's encouraging given that word has suggested it'll take at least 12 months or longer. A long way to go yet I guess.
It would be interesting if they where to run a update on proposed plan and and progression of work throughout the period to completion.Me i would expect armco and lots of Puddle clay then use dredged soil to build up the banking followed by the planting of low growing shrubs .
