To be honest i think you would not need to be so clever as to match the make or model - something approximately the same  would do , any white   cruiser type  boat under say 40 ft.

With narrowboats it would be even easier as to the untrained eye they all look the same apart from some are quite long and   others not so long.

However in the end any such fraud would probably be discovered and risk a criminal conviction so it is not worth it.

Difficult to catch if every month you put a different reg number in window (felt pen on paper) always use a boat that was going opposite way.

  2. Enforcement officers/rangers now cover the lengths so no extra cost for labour .Any one not paying charge should have it put on licence pay up or lose it.Evasion shows no respect for other boaters .The 3% is all year not just the short term as mentioned.Removing boat I.d is part of the strategy for evasion any decent person would simply put a notice in window for example to cover the period whilst waiting for say sign writer.

  3. If within the terms by-laws regulations and whatever else is in place CRT where to strictly enforce these rules? then think how much income would be gained .

The charge of £25 for overstaying is already in place in some areas but how much has been collected ?

Due to CRT incompetence the paper licence has become a farce where any knuckles rapped.

It is a requirement to have visible at i believe 20ft name and number on both sides of boat and even on any covers if they mask the boat ones.

Zero tolerance works for the benefit of all and would initially bring in much needed revenue however this i believe would soon diminish as people started behaving and conforming .There should be no 3% licence evasion then .

I still don't get it. If I display my license number the CRT can tell if I'm all up to date with my payments . I'm all for a crackdown on the no payers but if we need paper license why do they not send one (2) out every year with holograms or some such anti-forgery device rather like the DVLA used to issue. I've gone paperless so not really sure how to get my copies done.

call in at any CRT office and they will print them off

So you just guess the system reference number do you?  And make sure it is the same one that appears on the licence checker's handheld computer?

That's quite impressive.  How do you know what to put?

clone a similar boats licence remove your boat name and number both of which are supposed to be displayed and hey off you go .

  5. Running engines is a regrettable part of boating life for those who are not hurtling around the system everyday. Solar is not reliable enough in this country .Modern engines are not that noisy and is a steady constant noise .The worst is the Generator which ramps up and down as load changes these tend to be sat out in the open .The so called trad engine is far noisier but who will complain about that noise.

Well, a week on from the closure of Bosley locks due to the dry weather let's not kid ourselves, it's because they wasted most of the water through the gates at Bosley, and through the canal bed at Bollington, because they didn't fix known issues.

I have a fortnight off work, and whilst the cruising range is now VERY restricted, I'm blowed if I'm sitting at home. So we are on our (short) travels.

It is slightly surreal that at the end of day 2 we are sat on Marple Visitor Moorings. normally we are here by lunch on day 1.

It is also a little odd that so few boats are moving.  Only seen 3 other boats moving today.

As we travelled to Marple, there were, however a lot more boats moored than  usual, and it appears that a whole bunch of CCers have decided to make a race for the top pound before the closure, whilst most leisure boaters have given up on the idea of a trip out when there is only 20 mile to play with. Whilst I hope the visiting CCers enjoy the area, I do hope that they are here for the scenery, not to suddenly find themselves with an excuse to not move.

We've also walked down Marple flight, and it appears that they are not going to learn. All the locks have been left empty (even though the bywashes are running), and I can't say that I would be surprised if another chamber subsides as a result.

Somebody needs to get out of the "Welcome Station" (nobody around to be welcomed to a canal with no boats moving), and do something to try to preserve the infrastructure.

Mismanagement is the order of the day round here.

empty locks are a danger to wild life unless bottom gates are left open

Never mind. There's a captive audience of boaters being isolated and groomed for an increase in license fees to pay for all this - but first it will start by CRT banning use of the towpath for mooring pins,  ropes, chairs, picnic table, BBQ's etc -  in order to give bikers unobstructed access.

not seeing any rings being put in where these cycleways are springing up

Nothing quite like being indignant well in advance over something that only exists in your imagination and is unlikely to get beyond it!  You must be really pissed off about all kinds of imaginary scenarios that aren't going to happen but would be much worse than that if they did. :D

I don't, but 'The Independent', as quoted on the internet, seems to think so. It mentions Government-funded otter reintroduction programmes, and also says that otters will kill mink (the otters are larger, so that is feasible). Mink numbers have, they say, dramatically declined over the last few years.

Or perhaps they just chase them away from rivers and on to higher ground, where of course they become Hillman Minks.

Could you give me a reference for that please?  All I can find (both now and in the past) points to the recolonisation being natural.

When i visited Sea World Birmingham many years back they had otters which if bred then the young would be released into the wild .

I have never quite understood the philosophy of pump-outs where you self pump out into 20 litre containers and then carry them (according to pump out aficionardos miles along the towpath to get,- although moist normal people would take the boat) to a sanny station.

You have to pump it out - potential for blow-backs and spillage and still empty them as you would a cassette, but without the benefits of a 'air pressure relief' valve, thus getting 'glugs'.

I am interested in what benefits you see over a cassette system.

Time Tank 27 man days 2 drums 14 man days so 2 to 6 weeksish before urgent need of sanitary station in reality i tend to decant on a fortnightly basis

  10. one marina i was in the council asked for Band A council tax (£1000) for 8 boats this was "divided" to £50 a live aboard boat as the share. Residential is only for boats in marina for the full calendar year .Live aboard is supposedly no more than 10 months in marina yet some councils are happy if they go out for only one month
