    Hi everyone, I thought I'd post a little update for those interested. Meetings with the Canal & River Trust and the Environment Agency to discuss strategy improvements are in the oily pipeline. Have a good week

    Sorry, you're right of course. It was 80,000 litres of oily water. I don't know how much oil there has been, but enough to spread over five miles and still look very thick in places. Yes, THE Feargal is on board supporting the petition. If you're on Twitter, he's very active there too. https://twitter.com/Feargal_Sharkey Just to be clear here, this isn't a "CRT bashing" campaign. We're are hoping to achieve concrete improvements and constructive input from boaters. CRT have opened navigation again yesterday - and just a few hours later the Swan Sanctuary had to rescue two swans.

    Thanks for your thoughts on this. EA have pumped out more than 80,000 litres of oil, but it was all too slow and CRT didn't close navigation early enough, which resulted in the oil spreading over five miles. CRT provided some oil pads, some areas were boomed off, but again, it just wasn't enough. A group of boaters got together and started making their own booms, using hessian sacks, hair and straw. We fished out lots of debris and rubbish covered in oil, which the EA then didn't collect for weeks. What we need is long-term solutions and an effective emergency plan should something like this ever happen again (anywhere on the system). This was all a bit of a mess to be honest.

    Oh, that the polluter has to be found and prosecuted is a given! Investigations are still ongoing, I hope it won't be swept under the carpet. You can't really petition an unknown culprit, so we're concentrating on what we CAN do now, and that is helping with clean-up operations and campaigning for a better strategy. We also sent an open letter with the same text as the petition to DEFRA, EAC and local MPs-

    Dear boaters and friends of our waterways, On 11 February, lots of us and members of the public reported large amounts of used engine oil on the River Lea in East London. The response by the Environment Agency and the Canal & River Trust has been appalling. Too slow, bad communication between them and with boaters and the public...just to name a few. More than 5 weeks later, there is still a lot of oil on the river, and it's spreading further because CRT prematurely opened a lock again. Together with the Swan Sanctuary, Thames21, London Waterkeeper and many others, a group of boaters wrote an open letter and started a petition. The aim is to scrutinise and improve (or establish?) the authorities' emergency response strategy for pollution incidents like this. This oil spill could have been contained much much earlier on.     Hi all, Thanks a lot for your feedback. Fire resistance is indeed something I hadn't really considered! I have filled it all with slabs of celotex and also bought some spray foam, but it might not be necessary. I'll check again in a while to see if any condensation has occurred.

    Hi all, I discovered that a part of one of my cabin sides isn't insulated. Ideally I'd not rip out the built-in cupboard and ply walls... There's a large inspection hatch big enough to put in smaller cuts of Celotex board (about 20x50cm). So do you think it would work to put in multiple bits of Celotex, and then fill any gaps with spray foam? Thanks

    I found this Vespa website where people post photos of their Vespas painted in RAL colours. It's still in screen so not accurate, but I found it helpful to get an overall impression rather than relying on a small colour card. http://www.vespafarben.de/fotos/ral-farben/ I might go for Ocean Blue with Signal Red details.

    Yes, Carabo. I don't stay aboard every night, so that makes it harder to keep the boat warm. I think I might get a longer chimney for better draw, as when I reduce the air supply too much the fire often goes out. If I leave it open it'll burn too quickly

    Thanks, that's good to know. All my worrying started because a neighbour said to me "Of course you're cold, you don't have a baffle plate". I guess he just assumed from his own set up that you have to have one. Bad insulation is the more likely reason for my boat taking ages to heat up and the position of the stove isn't ideal either.

    Thanks for the advice. I'm going to semi DIY, ie I'll be working together with a boat painter who shows me how to do it, lends me all the tools and helps me. But yeah,it'll be on the canal, possibly under a bridge, I'll see what he has in mind.

    Yes I've tried that too, delicious as well! I like how the (sweet) potato starch gives the whole thing a nice creaminess.

    I made this recipe up after a long day of cruising. It was raining, the next pub or shop was too far and I didn't have many fresh ingredients at hand. Now I love this recipe and make variations of it all the time. After a while I realised it's "accidentally vegan", too. Olive oil 1 onion, chopped garlic, chopped ginger, finely chopped 3 medium potatoes, diced 1 tin of chickpeas, drained 1 tin of butterbeans or other beans, drained 1 tin of tomatoes Optional: 2 tablespoons of red lentils (dried) Optional: half a tin of coconut milk It's really easy: Fry the onion, garlic and ginger in a bit of olive oil Add the potatoes, cook for 5 minutes (add a bit of water if needed) Add everything else and cook for 15 minutes. Done!

    Yes, my boat is currently a dark red and apart from the fact that it was a bad paint job in the first place the colour is fading to a pink-ish tone.

    Thanks, Tony! Funny, I would've thought it's not that crazy an idea to offer a "colour chart" on steel, since obviously it's going to look quite different compared to paper. And looking on a screen varies a lot depending on your screen's calibration. But getting larger colour cards seems like a good idea. And I might go with my plan B, too.
