  1. I am probably not putting my point very well! There is nothing wrong with any of those things at all, it is that the other parts of the Thames are not like that.

The place that I would have expected to be the most upmarket (Oxford) is not, and places like Abingdon and Reading that you would expect to be rather down market don't appear so. All from the perspective of the river of course. The river in Oxford appears neglected where it is not in other places. Despite having lived 1 hour away by car for 30 years I have actually never been to Oxford before, unless you count driving round the A34, or back in the day visiting Rover Cawley. I know places like Marlow/Bourne End etc though and was expecting Oxford to be similar.

It's just my observation, and of course I appreciate not everyone will see it like that.

I agree I thought the Thames at oxford would be nicer but spent 3 days there and so much to see. Abingdon for the river is lovely and free moorings below the lock provided by the town, although I prefered the es moorings at the lock because such a nice walk into town for the dog from there and not so many people.

  2. I'm a newbie and was worried but it was really easy, pretty much indistinguishable from the rest of the thames. I didn't have an anchor or a VHF. I asked a few lockies about this on the way down, and all said, it's fine, don't worry, it's easy, go for it. It's easy to moor for free if you are not picky. It's a pretty stretch.

  3. I just cruised up the Thamesfrom Richmond. Have found lovely spots all the way up. Worst place was eton by railway bridge and had to pay. Abingdon is nice but I'm on es moorings which is supposed to be 24 hours. This is my secondnight because regatta in oxford and moorings are busy. Downstreamthriugh abingdon lock you can moor for 5 days no charge alongside water meadows but only 5 min walk into town.

  4. It's right in the middle of the bow just below the rubbing strake. I have accessto the impact area from inside and can see its well laid up. Very thick grp and no spiders web or any other sign of cracking. Like you say probably cosmetic.

  5. Im moored up above abingdon. I just moved back on moorings to give narrow boat plenty of room to manouvre. Unfortuntly they just hired it and only there second day. He was going astern but wIred to long to put it in forward gear and a piece of metal connected with my hull which

has left a 1inch by 1/4 inch deppresion in my hull

at front. Like a gouge. Obviously mine is grp and the hull of mine projected over his rope bumper. If you were me what would you do. They have said sorry and I hues a bit of fillerwould solve it or should I be worried about unseen damage.

  6. Ok. it was the solonoied. I was told there was someone called Andy on a liveaboard just above Teddington lock. this afternoon I set of in my tender. beached the tender by wier crossed the bridge and found the liveaboards. nice helpful people. 10 mins and tracked Andy down. 1 and half hours later he was on my boat with it fixed. This is the best bit, only charged me 25 quid. I gave him 30 and still thought I was robbing him. I recommend him and he goes all over country.

  7. Just managed to buy a 23 viking. original layout. original gel coat and all up together.Took over the moorings for 900 quid pa on the tidal Thames at Richmond near the bridge. anyway need to convert it to liveaboard and need to fit some sort of heating. thinking along the lines of a morso squirrel. also need to sort out electrics. without going into great detail I'm thinking if anyone is interested in me blocking hulls or other labour intensive menial work in exchange for helping sort out mine. alternately anyone interested staying on my boat and helping for an agreed price. I'm not wealthy so no telephone number quotes or I could just go to a marina. any suggestions welcome. time is not of the essence.

  8. I think we can confuse police men & women with police officers - the former are there to uphold common law; whilst officers are there to uphold statutes & acts of Parliament. Unfortunately; the officers give men a bad name - look at the change in attitude & body language between those wearing full body armour (TAU/riot squad) and your 'beat policeman' ; having faced both; I know which I prefer

They are one and the same.

  9. I think the essential point to grasp is that the Police don't exist to protect ordinary people from crime, the main purpose of their existence is to protect the landowner/ rentier/ aristocracy class from a re-run of the French Revolution, chopping heads off in Parliament Square etc.

As this doesn't happen very often, they have to fill time by bothering the hoi-polloi when they are driving 5 mph over the speed limit, smoking a joint, watching a television without a licence etc etc etc.

You don't really believe that do you?

  10. To my mind, the central issue is this.

Somebody is sitting in their narrowboat smoking some cannabis.

To own a narrowboat in the first place, they are almost certainly a decent person who has worked hard for several decades.

They aren't harming their fellow citizens by smoking cannabis.

So what business of the Police is it that their chosen pastime is smoking cannabis?

If the argument is that they are harming themselves, why don't the Police set up patrols outside McDonalds and arrest every fatty as they waddle out of the door?

Hmm interesting, so only decent people own narrow boats. I expect using your critieria only poor people commit crime.

Just an after thought. Many self employed or company directors I knew when I was in business fiddled something somewhere along the line. Not anything major but the odd purchase for personal use put down to the business or a little cash in hand not declared. No less a crime than the guy on benefits smoking a bit of weed.

    But a burger isn't illegal.

It is if the person selling it has not complied with the trade descriptions act

  11. This is all so academic. If a police officer want's to search he will. His ass will be covered by his bosses whatever. Just let him search and don't prolong the situation. Unless you are prepared to waste time and money pursuing an illegal search claim in court. Just remember the judge is already on the police side. They have plenty of reasons and acts of parlament that will let them. .

Unless of course your worried about the stash of heroin or cache of guns you have on board, but all you can do is delay the inevitable. I would just let them search and get on with my life!

Does that mean white people are transparent?

If you had lived in South Africa you would know it's an insult to call a black a coloured and vice versa. What the hell, good and bad whatever the colour.

  12. Which basically means that all the innocent who are wrongly searched have no redress and the police don't have to prove a thing. Really makes you feel all supportive and helpful towards them.

It's worse! If you are put in prison on remand and then found not guilty at trial you get no compensation or even the 45 pounds discharge grant given to convicted felons on discharge. That's life.

  13. I thought that these days it wasn't illegal to possess cannabis for personal consumption. If that's the case, thinking you can smell cannabis shouldn't be a reason for searching a boat.

I quite often get a whiff of it just passing people on the street. I thought that was because the law had been relaxed but perhaps it's just because there are no beat bobbies any more.

    It's a class b drug. lol
