  1. I can only answer for rural Wales, but the Ambulance and Fire Services here work to OS Map References. The local Young Farmers have recently been going around all the outlying farms and houses with a GPS and special cards on which they write the MR and place with the phone. It also helps if they have to arrange heli evac as that also can use MR's.

  2. Funnily enough I've just bought a pair of Binatone PMR's complete with rechargeable batteries and charger for £20.

If I know I can get a 2m cheap enough I am going to do my Foundation on the next course. Seen the notes my NdN got and I can answer most of them now.

  3. Nick, no problem.

Since lots of our Groups deal with the Police and other Official bodies we have to do things properly. Lots of the Groups do still use CB radio, plus mobile phones, but the Groups that are in the more remote areas are going over to 2m. Our Team had free training evenings arranged through RayNet, and got a deal on some radios. I am currently thinking of going down the same route. My next door neighbour is on 2m and I have been surprised how busy it is around Mid Wales, but then we do have a good repeater network in the area.

Certainly if anyone has any 2m sets they would like to donate to the Charity or would sell cheaply I know of several members who would be very interested.

  4. What a silly idea, 30 years to late.

I haven't even turned on my 2m/70cms set for over a decade, note to self must sell it on ebay.

I use marine VHF when needed otherwise self contained here or if desperate there's always the mobile.

I know a few people that might be interested in that in the 4x4 Response world.

  5. Found out this week that our timeshare boat is moving from Nantwich to Gayton this year, so I have now got to replan our jaunt for the year.

We prefer a ring journey but looking at the map there doesn't appear to be much suitable. We are both quite experienced, with 30 years behind us, and don't mind locking, preferably on narrow canals, but SWMBO doesn't do early, so probably would be on the go for about 6 hours a day. We do like good pubs and reasonably good food most nights and since we are on holiday don't often cook on board.

I know we can't use tidal waters, so that takes the Trent out of the picture. So has anyone got any suggestions?

  6. Maybe, but you need a license.... Most general public are not... or are they prepared to risk the (considerable) fine ?

    Nick

Sorry Nick, I don't get your comment.

CB does not need a licence, 2m does. We know that and all those that use it have got it. Since we variously work with lots of Official bodies, like the Police and Ambulance Services we know exactly what we can legally do (or not do!!)

  7. Just noticed the 4x4 business on your posts - don't off-roaders use C.B.? Couldn't they use the sel-call stuff? Just a thought........

Some use CB, some use PMR, but a lot of the 4x4 Response people are going to 2m amateur as it gives better range and clarity, isn't much more expensive than a good CB, plus can be "piggy backed" with RayNet.

On CB various channels are used depending on which Clubs are out and the surroundings. I don't think the sel-call would be wanted.

  8. So what is wrong with a marine VHF radio..? More use on a canal boat than any CB type radio, and at 25 watts has far more range...

Because it is MARINE radio, not Inland Waterways Radio.

For that matter, why not go to 2m Amateur. The licence isn't difficult to get and the range through repeaters is immense.

  9. 1/ Can you please provide the Govt designation for Channel 9 being the Emergency Channel only? I can't find it anywhere. Plus I know of NO Emergency Services who monitor CB Channels in the UK, and I am involved with them!

2/ Is "Group Call" legal in the UK?

3/ Since when has Channel 19 been the designated calling channel? It isn't in the areas that I use CB.

  10. Well done for all your actions. Isn't it good to know that the majority of people would always try to do something.

First Aid courses are run by many Groups, some of which you will have to pay for, but certainly in Wales HEART START WALES will give talks and training to groups for a donation. I suspect that the Britsh Heart Foundation will do the same in Englandshire. HSW even now do simple De-fib courses.

Mobile Phones: if you appear to have no signal still try 999, or even better 112. The latter allows "roaming" so will latch onto any phone system to get you through to the Emergency Services.

  11. I have the small Garmin Geko 101. It was bought for me by my kids for use when marshalling car rallies so that i can plot where I am on a map, as i am still a great believer in those nice big pieces of paper. Various screens, but the one I use most gives me a 10 figure map reference, which can quickly plot.

Battery life seems fairly good on rechargeable batteries, especially in "save" mode.

I have also used it on the dash of the car to check sppeds, and on the boat.

  12. OH! Well in that case it should be a good trip.

When I get home I shall look in my annotated Nicholsons to see where we have stopped on the bits we have done.

I do wonder how they can call it Black Country when only a little bit of it is in the Black Country? My "yam yam" friends would be most insulted.

  13. I might be getting confused here (old age creeping up!) but exactly what do you mean by the Black Country Ring?

I took it is as Great Heywood to Stourton Junct, up through the Netherton Tunnel and then down the 21 and back up to Great Heywood.

  14. Well around our way Tesco has found it isn't winning all the battles.

It has built a place in Newtown, but wasn't allowed to open when they wanted, because the road works hadn't been finished.

They have bought the old mart site in Welshpool, but can't get Planning Permission on it, and in Machynlleth, it went to the Welsh Assembly in the end, who had a economic survey done, which came down against Tesco building on the Mart there. They said they could find "no economic need" for 2 supermarkets in the town, and as the Cc-op were already planning to expand the shop, that that was all that was needed, plus there was already a Tesco in Aberystwyth and the one about to open in Newtown.

  15. What are you saying? That the canal can not be maintained without taxpayers money?

considering that the canal does not have a nesseccary function for the tax payer, why should the tax payer be expected to pay for your privelige to float a boat?

But it does have a function for the tax payer. It provides a massive amount of drainage, especially in urban areas, and as a water supply function in other areas.

It also provides many miles of Rights of Way, and is a recognised provider of educational facilities.

  16. Robbo,

seen those, but next door is a high 3 story Victorian house, and the only way they can get on to the roof is with a scaffolding tower, which they have to pay a licence for (!!) and neither Sky nor the local independent are willing to pay for it either. (There is a good view if you Google Map, Short Bridge St, Llanidloes). He is now thinking of appealing to WAG about the Special Conservation Area ruling, because it is stupid.

We already have 20 odd houses in the street with dishes, without permission!! (greased palms??)
