  1. I'm convinced it had spent time sunk but they wouldn't tell me anything about it claiming they didn't know! It's in much worse condition than the photos show. The floor boards are totally rotten for a start.

  2. Perhaps internet forums have had their day? Nothing is forever. I belong to a few forums (non boating) and all would seem to be seeing a downturn in posters of late.

I often ask on the cut if people are members of any boating forums, and many either aren't or perhaps were, but quit them. From my small sample, it would appear that most don't use internet forums. Personally I have found this forum to be a mine of useful information. OK there have been a few nobs, but these tend to be "here today, gone tomorrow." That said some very knowledgeable members have quit over the years, which is a shame.

Many people have gone over to Facebook where they can surround themselves with only those who agree with their point of view.

  3.

Looks like a tidy boat for its year with a lot of character! I would be concerned about those sliding windows though as they can be a burglar's friend.

The layout is exactly what we want and it didn't smell damp or neglected like the others we looked at.

The windows were one of the very few things we spotted that we didn't like. They look far too easy to break into. They'd be top of the list of things to replace but not a cheap job, even DIY.

  4. Was that on Sunday afternoon?

The Barleymow was a right shambles last Sunday afternoon. Boats were moored all the way up to the open bit in front of it, and as we were trying to go through the bridge a hire boat came in and started mooring up right on the edge of the other side of the bridge directly outside the pub and on the edge of the bridgehole. We got through whilst a boat coming the other way (and about three others behind them) held back, but were then left in total logjam as the hireboat was trying to moor in the only space to pass!

They were getting a bit snitty about why everyone was tutting and frowning at them and shouting about what ###s they were without really knowing why it was happening... I pointed out as politely as I could why mooring there was not going to work out for them, and they did duly move on, but it must have taken a while for all of the assorted mess of boats going both ways and having drifted across the cut while waiting to get sorted out after we went through!

It was Thursday 10th but your description sounds very similar to my experience.

  5. When we came through Newbold about 2 weeks ago the only boat on the water point was filling with water and nearly all the visitor moorings were empty

I bet that wasn't at 5pm or later!

I came past a week ago looking to moor and have dinner in the pub. After having to almost stop in the tunnel due to some numpty ahead of me thinking he could moor up in the entrance to the tunnel, I spent the next 20 minutes trickling past an endless line of moored boats for nearly a mile all the way up to the turn into Rugby Wharf.

I gave up and went through to Hillmorton Locks where the only space was on the 2 water points. Decided to not moor there even just for overnight and moved back round the bend and stopped there.

  6. I'm on a hire boat on the Ashby and Oxford and have dropped to tickover at least 50 yards ahead of any moored boats. Unfortunately everyone else seems to think that as we're on a hire boat they can speed past us as fast as they like. One rather ironic instance was NB Patience...

  7. I'll be hiring a nb for 4 days at the beginning of September. It'll be the first time on the cut for over 20 years!

Starting from Rugby, we're still not sure which way to go or how far to go before turning round.

Initial thoughts were to head north via Coventry canal and on to Ashby. Only one lick that way!
