one more thing! Does anyone know how much oil a BMC 1.8 engine holds?. when i pump the oil out (pump ordered from Amazon now!) if i measure how much i can get out, i can gauge how much gets left behind that the pump cant get to.

Why did i not think of this?.. thanks for your help. As i cant get to the sump plug i will but a pump and remove as much oil as i can, then fill with budget oils and run for a week or so. After this pump out again and then fill with decent oil. This way all the crud that i cant get out the sump the first time will be mixed and drained letting me get most out. thanks again, im glad i came across this site!. very handy.

I recently moved onto a narrow boat, I found that the oil needs to be changed. I was told that the sump pump pumps oil out when changing as you cant get to the sump plug. Sadly i have found that the BMC 1.8 in the boat has no sump pump. How can i change the oil, and what the best way to remove the oil filter as it seems very difficult to get to with pipe work in the way. Any idea people?
