In my opinion the tital should go to ross icebreaker
Reason is the oldest original narrowboat. Never been changed from a horse /tractor icebreaker.
This to me makes it the oldest. As yes there maybe an older boat out there but they have been changed.

Thought this was worth adding to the list of boats with bolinders
The Yavari in Peru
Has a 4 cylinder e typer 1914 bolinder in biggest of its type its 320bhp still working!

I'd be interested to see a picture of the Pollocks plate, if at all possible.
I'm trying to make a design for a replacement Pollocks builders' plate for my little tug, I know approximately what was on the plate but hoping to get the right style for the period.
If you have a picture, any chance you could email it if you can't post it on here?

Hi tim not a problem didnt get chance to take a photo but I will try on friday if we go past.

Thanks for update. This is where I was getting confused. As not by going on number as I dont have a list but on the top of the injector says peacock fm&c. Now I know the part can be swapped as for instance stour has crane fm&c and I know dane dosnt say dane on and I know others are different.
I wonder if parts were swapped rather than the engine? Is there any other ways of finding out apart from finding briar engine.

I could never understand how johnny mannaged to get his hands round the speed wheel on dane.
Wasnt he the only one who could kick start 30 in Worcester?

Hi tim yes is james pollock sons &co ltd londonPollocks of Faversham were the main Bolinders agent in the UK for quite a while, I think. Could it be their plate?

Off the top of my head I know it says the engine suppliers name and that if my memory is right its above the door from the cabin to engine room on the engine room side. I dont have a pic of it but will take one if remember tomorrow. Ill get back to you on that tim.

No but if you mean the peacock sign I believe thats at Swindon museum.
Not that I have seen it but at the same time I didnt know it was there to look have to look next time im at Swindon. Im sure ill go at some point with my grandad. Although it is far for him to go.

I know there is another plaque on the roof but that just says the engine suppliers think off top of head was john something but not 100% off top of head can check tomorrow but I know it only says bolinder engine suppliers.Is this 'plaque' still attached to the engine, and are there any other 'plaques' on PEACOCK's current Bolinder ?
Yes the plaque is on the block of the engine not sure how to upload pics otherwise would add it. That that is all the info on it. Only other numbers on engine are on fuel pump but thats to do with the pecker spacing.
The plaque is in the same place as danes when I last saw her and looks the same. Not moved like the ones on jaguar and such.

I know there not boats but there are bolinders in gloucester Waterways Museum, london museum and at least 3 in Ellesmere port museum all not in boats also there is a big double one in a pumping station saw on youtube.

Im asuming the engine number is the serial number as its sim to the other bolinder numbers I have.

Lernt something new. As said I knew they came apart but never had to nore did dad even when we cleaned ours or had to repair it the block was never lifted from the bed. I just assumed the only way was threw the roof.

Please dont get me wrong I wasnt questioning the info I was just curious as from my little understanding as to how the engine was changed thats all. I dont have any of the facts so can only go on the info I can see (e.g. no hole in the roof) I never got chance to meet john as I was only young.
Im just trying to peace all the info so I can get it right and then when others ask im not giving people wrong info.
As im planning on being envolved with the boat for a long time and intended doing a write up about the boat for people to read I want to be 100% on my information.
If you would be willing can you please inform me of the 1934 bolinder number and what boat the replacement came from I do have the current bolinder number.
There was ment to be no offence given in my last post I just know how heavy bolinders are a am confused as to the effort it must have taken. If there was offence taken then my apologies.

Ive seen my dad struggle to take the piston out wouldnt like to even attempt the block as I have removed the clutch on one and that wasnt exactly light.The joy of a Bolinder is that it will come out through the engine 'ole doors, piece by piece. (If you are feeling strong!)

I know they came apart just didnt realise it could all come out the door being man handled.

PEACOCK was originally fitted with a Bolinder 15hp model "E". Bolinder updated these engines first with the "NE" and later the "BM". F.M.C. Ltd. company records state that all of these earlier "E" engines were replaced with later "BM" engines between September 1929 and May 1935, with PEACOCK being listed as January 1934 with the change taking place at the company's Saltley dock.
PEACOCK's last owner (16 October 1953 to 27 December 1992) carried out a comprehensive but sympathetic rebuild of this boat which included replacing the 1934 Bolinder with a similar one.
Dont wanna sound thick or stupid but to get a bolinder out wouldnt you need a crane as peacocks cabin is original with only the outer cabin skin replaced im confused how did he get it out as there is no holes in the roof? I maybe getting info miles wrong but if he went to the effort of trying to keep the engine in when he bought the boat I cant see him just replacing it. As so much is still there. Just a question just trying to get info right.

Also if running warm make sure you check for crud under the rings as this makes the ring stick in the bore and puts more pressure and heat lower down.

Seams that around 0.15 is about where its ment to be if a rebuilt one and peacocks are very close be intresting to found out what the rebuilt ones in grayhound and jag ect are at

Dont sopose anyone has the bolinder numbers on a list of what numbers went in what boats so I can identify a bolinder by its number as to what boat it was in originally?

This morning Pilot and Spider were moored almost adjacent to each other in Shardlow.
Spider has now moved on.
These boats were built by different builders and although, from a distance they look similar, are quite different on close inspection.
(Hull sheer, cabin "planking", handrails, funnel position)
Moored just above the lock at Weston was the Clayton wooden tar boat Dane.
This was a pleasant surprise as I last saw Dane half sunk in the basin at Langley Mill.
Water was above the crankcase of the Bolinder.
Congratulations to whoever has "rescued" her.
Isn't it fun being a boat anorak.
She was sunk due to Margaret seeing very ill (now passed on) there was a decision made look after Margaret or the boats.
I do agree it's very nice to see Dane alive again I'm sure if the situation at home was different it wouldn't have happened as we always went everywhere on Dane then later on all 3 boats.
So please have some respect as your "rescued" was down to a very ill lady. (I know no disrespect was ment so no hard feelings but there are those about who care both for Dane as much as there family as Dane will always be family to me) I hope Dane gets all the care she needs as if I can one day I'll buy her back hopefully before Richard passes on as he did own her for probably 30+ years as I was 24 when he sold her.

I know off topic I'm glad to hear Dane is getting the treatment she deserves.
She was cared for well till about 2005-06 when Margaret fell very ill.
All 3 boats got put into the background.
She ended up sunk a few times as Richard couldn't leave Margaret and I was working all hours.
I think in the time between 2005-6 and 2009 I was the only one to take squire out and that was only for a week out of 3-4 years.

What happened to peacocks original bolinder? I know at least 1 part is on Dane. Only reason I ask is sence working its only had 2 owners. And must be one of the most standard non rebuild boats around?
