  1. Well I disconnected everything, rev counter still reads 500rpm, start engine rev counter drops to zero. Reconnect everything and leave it. This morning, rev counter reads about 100, start engine, and it reads fine, goes up when I rev up, goes down when I don't. This evening all is back to normal. Perhaps it had the Norovirus? Or was just fed up with me ! Not to worry
  2. Thanks all, Chris , always worth bearing that in mind, but thanks must go dear ditchdabbler, yes, nothing wrong with solenoid, just out of line. All bolted back into place, adjusted, lock nuts lock, turn the key, nothing, engine still running, oh ! Reconnect the wires! Ahh works as treat. Thanks a lot. Graham
  3. Actually, its almost inaccessible on our boat, but after forcing myself into the little gap between washer and Genny, then growing arms out of one side I did manage to get the solenoid off, but thinking about it, the lock but was fine, but the whole pin was on its last threads. Have to resume odd body position and bolt the thing back on, but if it saves £50 then worth the effort. I did notice some of the eBay solonoids were as little as £19 plus postage, would these be as good as the dearer ones I wonder?
  4. My canalstar has decided it doesn't like stopping anymore, traced fault back to stop solenoid, when connected the relay trip trips, take it out and no problem, so I need another, it has made in Taiwan printed on it, but think best to get genuine bit from a Lister agent, but who to go to......?
  5. Right, OK, The allbright contactor works fine, I had a flash from the -ve wire, on 1st attempt, then 2nd attempt, "Click", jobs a good one. all wired up and working, engine fires, and when the alternator picks up, contact is made, when the engine is stopped it drops out. On tick over I have 13.3ish v when the connection is made and both alternators are working together then on tick over I'm getting 14.4. Thing I cant work out is the rev counter has stopped working, but when the engine is stopped the needle shows 500 rpm ! Not the end of the world tho.
  6. Ha ha, good point, one thing at a time sounds good.
  7. Its all getting complicated.... But its not for my ears,so will go simple when we get back as we're away this weekend , also confused over new v/amp Meter where the charge light is lit all the while and why on earth does the water pump keep going off on its own, no drippy taps and can't find a leak anywhere, as you see I'm full of joy and good news.
  8. Hi, just read some of above, I put a metre over the spaces and they all seemed connected, is continuity bleeper bleeped regardless of which one I touched. So presumed it didn't matter.Wrong again? I haven't touched the "supply" to the D+ Just added the wire from the Albright to the post on the back of the alternator
  9. Thanks for that, you sound just like the wife, lol
  10. Parrelleling alternators, as recommended by the guys on this site, I've bought an Allbright contactor, so trying to keep simple, nice big fat cables from leisure and start batteries connected to the bottom contacts, now, body earthed to negative leisure battery and one of the spade connectors connected to the D on the alternator, I have no movement from the contactor when the engine is running, is it me or is it the contactor?
  11. I'm sure it will, its nice to see what's going on, this Albright contactor, am I right that the body is connected to the earth or -ve and one of the spade connectors is to the switch, +ve , or in my case the D on the alternator? That's how I have it wired up, but nowt, no movement, nothing, am I wrong or is it faulty?
  12. I have installed a metre like Idleness post, seems the biz, I also have the big connector as described , tho with alternators linked the amps didnt improve, but thinking about it, all the batteries are fully charged. The info sheet with the metre said I should flatten the batteries to reset the metre, but the voltage shown was correct and as we turned things off, the amount of amps being used dropped accordingly. It would be quite a pain to flatten the bank, but as always will listen to you wise ones Thank Graham
  13. My last post, well 2nd to last seems to have someone else's name to it. Not worried, just odd
  14. I'm curious as to my change of name ?
