  1. When we stopped at Ocker Hill last August all the moorings between the bridge and the residentials were packed full of Land & Water work boats (including a tug which had sunk!). The reason they were there was that dredging of the TV had been stopped due to oxygen deprivation killing fish. Very, very quiet all over the BCN apart from the centre of Birmingham.

  2. Get a bi-metal hole saw (and appropriate arbor) from Starrett (they sell direct online). Go slowly, and it's surprisingly easy.

Personally I'd get the old hole welded up especially if you are are not going to be able to get at the inside of it when you have finished the refit, but in the interim I'd put a threaded cap on it and get it sorted out properly next time the boat was out of the water.

  3. Yes, I nearly got stung by this: Two apparently very similar 1kg extinguishers from different sources will not necessarily have the same A/B/C fire rating. Each would have been compliant with the BSS per-extinguisher requirement in its own right, but the total capacity would have been too low to meet the aggregate BSS requirement.

The BSS doesn't specify any requirements for the C rating though.

The details of the extinguishers found, and their ratings, used to be recorded on the BSS Appliance Record, but I don't know what you get under the new online system.

  4. Had a number of the cheaper bulbs but they generated terrible RFI (and I listen to the radio a lot). Replaced them with suppressed models from Bedazzled and had no problems at all. Bedazzled offered a full money back guarantee if I wasn't happy, pleased to say I've not needed to take them up on it.

Also converted some Labcraft Crystalite fluorescents by fitting them with a couple of the LED "discs" from the same place (as there was no suppressed tube bulb at the time). Very bright and under 500mA per fitting.

  5. Anderton (2 water points outside the service block), but if you're setting off from there you should be full already... Choice of 3 water points in Middlewich (below Big Lock, Town Wharf, and right on the corner of the junction with the Middlewich Branch), Barbridge Junction (no sign of an out of order sign a couple of days ago?), Nantwich (outside the service block).

  6. The "maintenance" you refer to is the big breach at Dutton!

Going towards Manchester from Preston Brook, there are a selection of restaurants-which-are-not-pubs in Stockton Heath within walking distance from the canal (London Bridge), and also some in Lymm. There are a good few pubs as well, but I don't know them well enough to say which, if any, might have separate dining areas.

Plenty of pleasant scenery up that way. If you get as far as Dunham Massey there's a stately home to look round.

First boat I ever hired was from Claymoore :)

  7. Approaching from the Middlewich side, does anyone know how far you can get towards Dutton? The original stoppage was a clay dam at Bartington Wharf (Black Prince), but I seem to recall a further length was reopened shortly after.

    Anyone know?

  8. Hi all looking for advice on wiring my horn,

Wondering if I could have a single larger wire with a relay that was wired to the horn button with thinner (cheaper) wire to close relay and activate horn?

What size relay would be suitable for a 12v single trumpet horn?

Is this a viable option, 20ft run of larger cable and a about 30/40ft of thinner cable to relay?

Exactly what I did, so I could run a remote horn button on the control lever column (cruiser stern). I did the tunnel light as well so I could replace the switch with something smaller. If I was starting again I would run a thicker feed pair and some thin control wires to the front and put a relay box there.

Remember that the coil circuit needs a (small) fuse as well as having a fuse on the power side.

  9. Same it's gone :( Wandered down there from mooring at Windmill End only a few years ago for a pie. No pies, or indeed food of any kind. Stopped for a quick pint or two then wandered off in search of food. I seem to recall we found a takeaway nearby.

  10. i dont see how the layout diagram and the picture of the bathroom match up.how do you remove the cassette from the thetford with the bed in the way?

I agree the photo doesn't match the diagram, but that said on my boat the hatch for removing the cassette is under a bed (with a large hatch in cront of the bed). It's doable, but I didn't build it and I wouldn't recommend it!

  11. Link to maps

Not good for the northern T&M or the SUC Middlewich Branch either: T&M crossing between Whatcroft and Croxton on a viaduct ("max speed 400km/h") (and I reckon pretty much directly over one of my favourite mooring spots!), Middlewich Branch crossing between Stanthorne Lock and the existing WCML.

Oh, and a Bridgewater crossing at Agden Bridge between Lymm and Dunham.

(Not looked further South at Stoke area yet)

  12. Energy is used to produce light - you do not get 100w of heat.

A traditional incandescent build is a few percent efficient at best: almost all the input power comes out as heat, and very little as visible light. What does come out at light will interact with whatever it hits, and (assuming you keep the boat curtains closed!) end up as heat as well.

That said, having all the curtains closed and lots of bright lights may prompt speculation as to the nature of one's exotic house plants... :o
