  1. I don't see how it can't.

I have seen (domestic) immersion heaters where the thermostats (plural) slide into hollow tubes fixed to the boss. So the thermostats could be slid out and replaced without draining any water or removing the boss.

ETA: it is possible that using the engine to heat the calorifier may have heated the immersion safety stay beyond its operating temperature, in which case you will need to reset it as MtB says above.

  2. Bottle - As i hirer, the statements on the website make little sense to me! If you can help further i would appreciate that! As for having time, i suspect a good 3 extra hours on day 1 would allow us to take in a bit of the Weaver as well if wanted?

Ignore the bits about licences, a Claymoore boat will have a full CRT canals and rivers licence. Look at the other sections on that website, you will need the permission of the hire company to use the lift (I don't know whether CRT demand to see it in writing, but I imagine they will familiar with whatever Claymoore's policy is).

The problem you will have is that as you won't know exactly what time you are setting off until you do, you won't be able to book in advance, plus as Tim has pointed out you may get held up for up to 40 minutes at Saltersford. If you really want to do the lift and the Cheshire Ring, consider going clockwise and trying to get well ahead so you have your last full day free at Anderton. Then Anderton most of the way to Preston Brook is a pleasant evening cruise?

  3. If you want to use the lift at a particular time you will need to pay a booking fee, I think it's about £5 each way. You will also need permission from the hire company to use the lift. You don't have time for much more than a quick down-and-back-up though, so you won't see (arguably) the best bits of the river.

I realise you want a short final morning, but if you stop a little further out than Keckwick there is a pub at Moore. Also on Day 6 I would be tempted to try to get the Rochdale 9 out of the way as well, and moor at Castlefield.

Can't remember when you are planning on going, but I assume you are aware of the stoppage at Dutton.

  4. Just a guess, but the land around Etruria has sunk quite a bit, requiring the lockside there to be built up more than once. If this had happened over a wider area, with Bedford Street pair also sinking, that would account for the lesser fall on the bottom lock, and the need for a new shallow lock further up.

If you look at the washwall between Bedford St and Planet locks, you will see that parts of it are very high above the current water level, lowered by the addition of Planet lock. Is it Bedford Street where the fall of the lower chamber is now substantially smaller that the upper? I seem to recall an "overflow" on side of the lower chamber, and this would also fit with the whole edifice having subsided.

I didn't know about Consall Old Lock though.

  5. Same control as I have. The gearbox should be in neutral with the lever at the centre of its travel (probably vertical, but you should feel a clear detent). Moving the lever one way should both increase engine revs and put the box in forwards, the other way should increase engine revs and put the box in reverse,

Pushing the button in stops the control from putting the box in gear when moved, so you can open the throttle up for starting. The button should go in around 10mm, I would estimate, and there should be a spring so you have to push it in and hold it. Then the lever should be move relatively easily. Make sure the lever is in the neutral position first.

  7. My leisures are on switch 1, starter on switch 2. I usually just keep it on both when I start the engine up as it seems to start easier.

Using your leisure batteries to assist with engine starting will not do them any good at all.

  8. Ok, I'm confused... The other thread, started a few days ago, reports a recent email about Quorn Marina Properties going into liquidation back in February 2014. That was the company that owed the unpaid NAA that started the whole saga off. Is someone suggesting that one of the other related companies is now in trouble, and if so based on what?

  9. I used the Halfords 15W/40 mineral oil for years until they stopped doing it. I think the last lot of oil I bought came from The Range, and was still a basic 15W/40 mineral. Or try an independent motor factor.

ETA: and why the reduction from 5 litre bottles to 4.55? Is there a reason for that or is it just a hidden price rise like smaller bars of chocolate? :)

  10. Thanks all, hadn't thought of looking for fork lift, etc batteries, got a bit fixated on "leisure". I'll have a bit more of a dig. I'm not aware of a case number on the old ones, but they're not coming out until they come out!

Ray, your link seems to be AWOL!

  11. My domestic bank consists of a pair of positively geriatric 220Ah Elecsol batteries, the older flooded type with removable top-up plugs, not the later sealed-for-life type. They are getting more than a bit tired, so this year I will be looking to replace them.

The advantage of the larger batteries in my case is that the available space is limited, and two will sit end-to-end under the cruiser stern. I don't really have room for a similar capacity of "standard" 100Ah-ish batteries (plus a starter) without some serious rearrangement, so for simplicity I'd like batteries with a similar size and shape.

I've been looking around for suppliers, and while there seem to be a few who have something suitable in terms of size and capacity, they all seem to be the sealed-for-life type. Call me old-fashioned, but I am inherently suspicious of batteries that can't be topped up, so would also prefer flooded with removable plugs.

Anyone have any recommendations of manufacturer of such a thing?
